My Lago Di Como boat was in a couple of hours, so decided to walk around the town and the lake-shore. Came across this Funicular which takes you from lake level to the picturesque village of Brunate situated on top of the surrounding mountains. The views from the top were amazing! Walking around in the ancient village itself felt like it takes you back a few centuries, the effect only spoiled by a few cars that you see parked in the driveways of picture perfect cottages which felt ancient!
The funicular ride up itself was nice, a bit rattly but hey, this ain't Manhattan. Before this, the only Funicular ride i have had is the decidedly cringe-worthy one in downtown LA. This one felt like a real thing, people in the village use the funicular for their daily commutes to the town (Como). Just walking around the village, admiring the old buildings and ancient cobblestone streets, is worth the hassle in getting to the top.
Beware that most of the prime real estate with juicy views of the lake are already taken, long time ago, by the locals, back when tourism wasn't a thing. So, please avoid getting into people's backyard and respect their privacy! Gotta mention that one back cobblestone alley which clearly opened to a spectacular view of the lake, but was marked "no trespassing" etc, i seriously considered taking a chance! In the end, sense prevailed and i managed to stop myself. YMMV.
Definitely would recommend doing this. Beware though that i did this on a weekday in fall. Don't even think about doing this in the summer unless you are willing to wait 2-3 hours in the line. Yup, this place...
Read moreIt's my second time using the funiculare after 7-8 years and I have noticed some improvement in the amount of space I had this time in the cabins. Could be because it was not peak season but I felt they regulated better the amount of people in each cabin to make the ride more comfortable. I was very pleased to notice the great amount of storage space above the seats and I wonder why people with huge backpacks don't use it, you have enough time to put your luggage away and make the trip more pleasant for yourself and for others. Stops are with well organised access for trolleys and wheels, cabins go up and down quickly enough to manage the amount of people. There was a lot of waiting for tickets and we bought a few in advance that were supposed to be used twice, but never worked to pass the gate a second time. We had to buy new tickets and waisted some money unnecessary because of the system malfunction. When there was a personnel, they were solving it, but they were not there late in the evening or on the upper station.View from the cabin during the ride is beautiful, unfortunately it's not so easy to see much from the amount of standing people. It's impressive how high it climbs for a few minutes, we took the road down walking through the forest and it took us hours. The first stop down is in a very lively area that feels great to walk both during the day and at the evening, right at the north side of the lake and panorama from the top is...

This funicular train 🚞 is only a 5 minutes walk from the Como-Lago railway station 🚉,which is on the right side of the lake upon exiting from the station.
The roundabout ticket 🎟 costs €5(approx.)for an adult. To enjoy the best view from the funicular when ascending or descending you must be clever enough to be the first one in the row to enter the board and stay in the downside of the train.
After arriving at the Hilltop, you can enjoy the magnificent view of Lake Como, The mountains ⛰ of Lugano-Switzerland, Turin etc. This stop is a great location to take some amazing photos 📷 and selfies 🤳 with your buddies 😀 and loved😍 ones. There is a mini restaurant here,a souvenir shop and a bar. After looking around for some minutes take the bus (cost:10€/adult) to the Lighthouse, which is presumably the highest place around lake como. After that return safely 🙏 and enjoy the rest of the...
