Love many Miyazaki films so this was naturally a place to visit when my husband and I came to Japan. This was the second Donguri Kyowakoku Store we visited. The first was in Tokyo Character street under the Tokyo station. My favorite movie is Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa follows after, to be honest I was kind of disappointed that the stores are heavily dominated by Totoro and Jiji. I like Jiji since we have two black cats of our own but everything was either Jiji or Totoro. My guess is this is because the Kawaii culture of cuteness is a big thing in Japan.. Totoro and Jiji are the cutest of the characters in the Miyazaki films indeed but in my opinion I found Totoro to be a little boring and am surprised that he is basically the face of Ghibli. I guess that's just my opinion though. But anyway, if you're a big Princess Mononoke or Nausicaa fan, don't expect too much. There was a small Princess Mononoke section which had some cool stuff but it paled in comparison to how many Totoro and Jiji things there was. For Nausicaa there was probably only 3 items I can think of and they were all mislabeled as being from Castle in the Sky!.. there was also surprisingly few Spirited Away things too considering how big of a movie it is. None the less it was fun To see a store completely dedicated to Studio...
Read moreSo glad we found this Ghibli store on our trip and we were sure to make a stop here! it was a little tough actually finding the store with Google maps but it is definitely worth the effort. It is outside of the Skytree/Skytree mall down a few outdoor escalators/stairs. The store was not too crowded either so you could actually spend time looking at everything without feeling rushed or having people shoulder to shoulder with you.
The store itself is so fun and as soon as we saw we were extremely excited! The décor and aesthetic of the store is beautiful and really gives honor to the Ghibli movies! Price wise, I don't feel like anything was overly expensive but you are definitely paying a premium for everything. I do wish there was more No Face merchandise. They have a capsule toy machine inside that has a Totoro with different accessories for 500 yen which I definitely had to get! They also have some good photo ops (giant Totoro) and they were also playing a Ghibli movie on a TV next to him.
Overall, this is an amazing store and even an experience if you are a huge fan of Ghibli and their fantastic creations! It is not the best Ghibli store we visited during our trip but absolutely...
Read moreFirst off, it's not in the mall. It took me a while to find because Google maps seemed to show it inside Tokyo Skytree Solamachi, but you have to go outside to get to the entrance of the store.
As for the store itself, honestly I was a little disappointed. It's mostly full of Totoro and Howl's Moving Castle stuff. I was really hoping for more Nausicaa stuff, but I was only able to find a few items. Still, better than nothing.
Most of the things for sale were made in China. I did manage to pick up a few postcards that were printed in Japan, but Japanese made items seemed to be the exception, not the rule.
I didn't have much interaction with the staff. They certainly weren't rude, but they also weren't overly friendly as I had come to expect from shopping in other stores throughout Tokyo. That might have been simply the size of this store verses the other, smaller shops that I visited while I was there.
I didn't really see anything in this store that I couldn't buy online and have shipped to me; likely from sellers within the US. I'm not unhappy that I went, but I probably won't go back for any reason. But if you're in the mall, and you're a fan of Studio Ghibli, it's...
