I've read several posts of this cemetery. I'm shocked to read comments about its current state. What 200years have passed, and they think the families are still around to care for the site. It's sad to know that settlers often used Indian burial grounds to bury their dead and there is no mention of this in many cemeteries throughout the country. The city grew up around this site and serves a purpose today as a green space. Pay homage to the dead. Have a picnic in this green space, and walk your dog. Watch your dog chase squirrels in this green space and enjoy the moment that there are green grass, old shade trees, and sun shining in this thriving metropolis that the forefathers...
Read moreSmall and left AS IS- many of these stones are 150 -200 YEARS OLD. Yes, they are disheveled and left as is for not further the damage of the original intent. Sadly many names of the people of the cemetery have been totally lost to time. 20% are unknown and will an be an eternal mystery. The space is open to the public and people walk in there 24/7. It’s part of the 4th ward. The history buff will adore this gem and to give you perspective the great uncle of the 11th president POLK is buried there. Peaceful, but do t discount it’s significances to the history of the area, first settlers, first doctor, firsts of people in a NEWLY FOUNDED COUNTRY. It’s a miracle these stones...

We did a history, graveyard walking tour. Our tour guide was great informative and very animated. We learned a lot about the history of this particular graveyard. For instants, the gravesites/stones that we saw where from the graves a wealthy people.
They were buried on top and then the grave started trickling down to what they believe is layers and layers and layers surrounding the cemetery. They are at sidewalk level, what they believe is that the poor people were buried on top of each other, they don’t know how deep or how many are buried there.
