I've been a member of both The Gents Place and Scissors and Scotch for a total of about 14 years. I'm more than happy to pay extra to go to a place like these over say, Great Clips because the atmosphere is elevated, and the quality of the haircuts are significantly better. I live in Overland Park, KS which is where I get my haircut normally, but was traveling to visit my family for Christmas and my membership transfers to any of the other S&S locations. Since I was in Dallas, I thought I would give this location a try. My experience was not great to say the least and not nearly as good as any of the locations in Kansas City. I was going to give two stars instead of one due to the fact it was the end of the day before everyone got off for a few days for Christmas break, so they might have been a little checked out but it's been so frustrating to me that I decided to go with one.
Came to check in and no one was at the front desk, not a big deal and I waited for about 5 to 10 minutes, and someone came out and got me checked in. When I told her who I was there to see she said she would get her and was gone for another 10 or so minutes and the person who cut my hair finally came out, this was bout 20 minutes after my initial appointment was scheduled, (possibly longer). She looked like she just woke up from a nap and she actually confirmed during my haircut that she was taking a nap in the break room. She asked how I like to have my hair cut and I explained that I wanted to keep my hair longer and just clean up the sides and a bit of a trim. I purposefully styled my hair that way I like it so she could see. I don’t know why she even asked because she didn’t seem to even try to cut my hair in a way that would work. I honestly think once she got going, she forgot I event had a side part because she cut all my hair - top and sides the same, very short length to the point where when I style my hair I can’t event tell where my part is because all of the hair is the same length. Mind you prior to my haircut, the top of my head length was 3 or 4 times longer than the sides. After she washed my hair, she went to style it and started styling it on the other side from where my part is because she legit couldn’t tell either that the part is on the other side. This was by far the worst haircut I have had in 14 years between TGP and S&S. No blending, no attention to detail, etc. I’ll be going into the Prairie Village location here in the next few days to get it fixed not that its finally grown out a bit….
By the time I noticed how bad the cut was it is always super awkward, and I was tired, so I didn’t say anything. Probably...
Read moreUnfortunately I received a very poor haircut from "B" (not trying to be vindictive and hurt anyone).
I expect precise technique and uniformity when I get a skin fade.
Instead it was patchy, uneven, and in the end I left because I could see he wouldn't be able to resolve it (especially as he became frustrated and unprofessional in his demeanour), and no other staff intervened to help fix up what he had started.
Regarding technique - he was approximating by hand without use of machine blade levels or guards when gradually fading up, he was jumping all around my head with the machine instead of starting with the basic zero line (like EVERY barber does as we ALL know) , remove everything below it uniformly and quickly, then methodically working the machine from the line around the head and then gradually fading around and up.
He stated he had been cutting for 20 years but it was not evident given that he didn't start the fade with the basic line and hair removal below it, plus the insistence on approximation all over the head for the fade instead of using precision and measurement via blade switching and guards.
I was really disappointed. The results were very uneven and patchy.
"B" then became defensive and when I showed him an example photo of a previous haircut to help explain that he should user the shaver also, he tried to latch onto the photo's fade height being different to the one I asked of him (I wanted something slightly different - not an excuse for poor technique and uneven results).
The staff were nice but I just wanted to de-escalate and leave when I knew he didn't have the skill, patience, nor willingness to accept it was a bad looking cut, badly executed.
Choose your barber carefully. "B" was simply assigned as he was available.
A cool bar, great facilities, big prices and friendly staff can never replace SKILL, TECHNIQUE, and PRECISION with machine, scissor, blade, hand and eyes.
It was my first cut but I still paid the $38 + a $12 tip. I was offered (and I refused) to accept a free haircut from "B" when he offered it because he was doing it in an agitated manner with attitude, and remained unapologetically defiant about the poor technique to...
Read moreJust got back from a 15 year session (haircut + facial + neck massage) at Scissors & Scotch.
Wow.
I have been looking for Scissors & Scotch my entire adult life. I've been an avid barbershop bouncer which, as you can imagine, makes the latest recipient of the previous barbers work very happy. Literally EVERY TIME I get home from the barber my wife asks, "did you say what you wanted?" And my answer is always yes, I walked in with pictures and specific instructions.
Now this review may not be what the Dallas Scissors & Scotch team wants but they don't really have a say, now do they!
Can you get a better haircut in the DFW area? Probably. I am no haircut aficionado so I wouldn't even know. BUT I am confident that I have found my haircut forever home.
Why?
Ambiance - You just feel good walking in.
The bar - It is stocked with high end whiskeys and I am sure they make good craft cocktails (I went at 10am so passed on the booze). They did have a fancy coffee / espresso machine so I am sure they can make whatever you want.
The cut - I have no complaints. It was done as I requested and it was a relaxing experience. And I think it looks GREAT!
The facial - I didn't even know I signed up for a facial and it's probably the first one I have ever had in my life and it was awesome!
The club - So the bar really looks like an exclusive networking lounge. Membership is $$$$$ but if my experience today is any indication, it will be worth it.
The ownership - This is a franchise from group that started in Nebraska. The franchisees are a family group (I believe based ion Austin) that relocated to Dallas to get this concept going. I was greeted by Tanner (part of the aforementioned family group) when I arrived and he could not have been nicer. He has clearly worked hard to make this experience awesome.
The technology - I did everything through the app including rescheduling last minute and asking what the parking situation was. I HATE calling barbershops and asking for appointments as well as asking random questions (like about parking!).
Scissors and Scotch isn't for everyone. But...
