KAWS is interesting and as a contemporary artwork, the message over is over my head. It features two stylized characters with signature X-ed out eyes and cartoonish features. The taller figure gently rests an arm around the smaller one, evoking themes of comfort, protection, and companionship or perhaps a parent-child relationship. It's... odd.
KAWS is Brian Donnelly. Commissioned by Dan and Jennifer Gilbert for the Detroit Art Collection, which aims to revitalize public spaces with contemporary art. It was installed in May 2018. When it was installed, his comment was "Detroit has an incredible cultural history and I'm proud to have my work permanently displayed in the city."
