Solid gym, great members, fantastic staff and plenty of equipment. Most notably, this location has been seeing an increase in cleaning and less downtime for broken equipment over the last year, gotta give management and specifically Chris the shout out for the uptick in stressing the importance of equipment maintenance. Clearly management has begun to focus on some of the areas that were falling behind, but with such heavy traffic from the regulars and the proximity to visitors from Waikiki hotels/resorts, this location lends itself to extra wear and tear vs other Oahu locations. Management is on the right track with improvements and hopefully they can get more investment from corporate to bring it up to most consumer expectations for a 24 hour location on Oahu. Hence the 4 out of 5 stars, but I would have zero issue with giving a 5 out of 5 if they can correct a few of the noted issues.
Positives
The front desk always has someone, which is super helpful since they'll validate your parking for $2, but Iād opt for the monthly at $15 and make your life even easier.
Long tenured staff members who are helpful and pleasant, always a good thing for any business you frequent, but with a gym it is especially nice since you spend at least 5 or 6 days out of the week there, good to see familiar faces.
Good variety of free weights and machines. Nothing is missing for getting in a proper workout regardless of what your split is.
My wife takes the BodyPump with Marice. This class is legendary, Marcie has a legit following so book your class early. But, the GX room could do with more equipment since the max number of members for a class is higher than the count of usable/functioning equipment.
Other members wise, everyone is super cool, people of all demos are there to get a workout in, no judgment and I've never seen any problematic characters. If you attend at any regular cadence or even if youāre off your normal schedule, youāll see people you recognize and honestly wonder if some are getting in two workouts a day or moreā¦
Cleaning supplies are typically full, both the disinfectant spray and paper towels. Most people also take the time to wipe down before and after using equipment. This is highly appreciated.
Negative
Too successful, can get REAL busy during the weekdays. If you go during the busiest time, have patience and for certain things like the benches, smith, squat racks and pulldowns/cables there are sort of unofficial waiting areas, some new members or out of towners cut the line, but most people begrudgingly just let it go. Maybe some markers on the ground to let people know where to wait for each section would help cut down the confusion.
While they're always fixing things, they can never seem to get ahead. There are new pads on some of the old machines but others are still sporting huge cracks/gaps and you'll see grips on the machines missing on one side or the other or real gnarled like someone has been chewing on them. About 20% of the time one of the three pec deck/reverse fly machines is broken or has a messed up arm, similarly, of the three leg extension machines, only one is worth using as the two have issues with range of motion.
Bathroom (mens at least) could do with some help, and while they clean it on a regular basis, it needs to be gutted and renovated. One of the two hand dryers has been out of commission for years now, unreal.
Overall, the good outweighs the bad and I still recommend the gym. I just hope someday management is able to get the appropriate funds from corporate to fix some of the issues. This location has a high utilization rate from the regular members (seriously, you'll always see the same people) and with the added volume from people on vaca, some extra investment will go a long way. Hopefully management can leverage this to lobby...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWell this is my first time at this 24 Hour Fitness here in Hawaii which is open 24 hours. Now I see in Hawaii they have a homeless problem which they call it something else well no that's what it is they're homeless. Now mistaking yes before someone that's homeless that worked out here that was charging their phones like other members. Is outrageous to defamate someone's character the way you never seen them before this is this lady's third time she works on The Late Night Shift where she's assuming things and not asking and also I was also threatened that I'm told to call the police because I'm a member that fell asleep charging his phone that worked out throughout the whole day today. And let's remind you that I just got off a plane 14 hours and arrive in Honolulu. So somebody really needs to speak to this lady at the desk with her perception and defamation of people's character and where's her conduct that is not appropriate conduct for a place of business that's open 24 hours. This is what you call unacceptable when I was told I could not sleep here and immediately got up uncharge my phone's which was the reason why I happened to fall asleep not even an hour. And the lady that is working with the late night shift has this presumption that's somebody's homeless or whatever the case might be I don't think she seen me before I spoke to her about this at the front desk you had another member come up and also talk about cops as I'm fine with any police officers you bring. I have people in special civil court right now that's on hold for the holidays. Please start to reinstruct your workers that have been working a 24-hour location. As this is not acceptable and their conduct was very unethical. And because of this incident I will be forwarding this complaint to the corporate office and to this location regional manager. Also this is an outrage as I've been a member before a long time at several different locations located across the United States. Please speak to your workers and reference to conduct. 24 Hour Fitness has a demand letter in the mail and then you try to get out of it later I guess sad for a place that supposed to be nice and Paradise like Honolulu downtown. I am disappointed as like I stated before this is my first day here and first day in Honolulu and the first time that this lady working the late night shift has ever seen me. So like I said before I was speaking in reference to her perception of a long-time member which she never sees me sleep here in our life she never seen me in her life I had three different times where she had some type of animosity and I never seen this lady before in my life. One she made me sign in double. Because I guess her presumption was I not a member here? That is called defamation of my character and me trying to speak to a young lady in reference to the situation I was told I'm supposed to call the police s* on an island would that happen did you. I instructed her I wish you would have called the police because I'm a member and if you don't know how to deal with situations when people are a member is what I'm talking about here which is hardly unacceptable. Again please make sure you educate your workers on conduct towards a member. Hey you would like to contact me my information is at the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI am new to Oahu and am looking for a gym. I have health issues and working out keeps me healthy and happier. I usually try a gym at least one time before joining to make sure their equipment works for me and to see if we are a good fit. Well, this must be a common occurrence because the 24-Hour Fitness website tells you to sign up for a free three-day pass so you can check it out. I signed up and received the following email (cut and pasted, NO EDITING)
"Thanks for requesting a free pass to 24 Hour Fitness. We're excited to welcome you into the club!
Donāt forget to bring a photo ID and the web confirmation code below to show to a team member when you arrive. Weāll also activate the premium workouts and features in our 24GOĀ® app for the duration of your pass ā bring your phone to take advantage of studio class reservations, audio coaching, and hundreds of video workouts to help you get the most from your experience.
We look forward to seeing you, Your 24 Hour Fitness Team"
WELL, I was on my way to the facility when I received a phone call. The young man on the phone asked when I would be coming in because I needed an appointment to visit and it would be ONLY for a tour as they do NOT allow free workouts. He said (after asking if I was a tourist or a resident and I am a new resident), and I quote "We are way too busy to let people come in and work out for free". He then explained only after I signed up and paid would I then be allowed to work out. When I pointed out that they were contradicting 100% of what the website explained, he did not care. When I asked if that policy meant the company was guilty of false advertising, he did not care. When he then asked when I wanted to come in for my tour, I said I did not want to come in (I should have said I don't care). So, 24-Hour Fitness: PLEASE change your website to be truthful or perhaps get your franchises to stop making your advertised promises complete and utter LIES. You do not have to work out at 24-Hour Fitness to know they are a BAD MATCH. Find a better gym. I'll let you know when I find it and...
