I had come to Honolulu for a week trip. Kanoya was recommended to us by some friends that are locals and I saw the reviews on this place and had high hopes. I had looked through the menu online to see if they had anything besides sushi since my boyfriend isn’t a huge sushi person like I am, and they did. We wanted to meet some friends at the restaurant and when we showed up, we thought it was gonna be cool and we were going to enjoy ourselves. It took them about 20 minutes to come take our order, while they were assisting others. I work in the customer service industry. I know how painful it is to deal with difficult customers, so I didn’t bother to say anything and had told myself that they were busy and it was okay. The girl took our order, we got our sushi about 10-15 mins later, cool that’s fine. But my boyfriend and his friend had ordered the chicken teriyaki and steak teriyaki. We had already finished our sushi about 20 mins after we got it, and had already been waiting for the teriyaki an extra 20 mins till we had to ask about it. The guy (looked like he was in charge) said the kitchen was backed up because of online orders and that he saw them cooking our food. 20 mins goes by and we still hadn’t gotten it. My boyfriend’s friend also ordered a hot sake and we had to ask 3 different times for it, and we still didn’t get it by the end of the night. After about 45 mins of waiting, we got the teriyaki. There weren’t even a lot of people after 20 mins of us being there and hardly any online orders going into the restaurant. The staff was assisting other tables that had gotten to the restaurant after we did. The girl was serving them drinks, the guy was constantly going to other tables BUT OURS. The meals didn’t even come with everything it was supposed to. We were missing the miso soup and salad. The teriyaki was also very tough and salty. The service was the main problem of the night. We really wanted to like this place, especially with the such high ratings and reviews I’ve seen. I have never been one to leave a review anywhere and have never experience customer service such as this...
Read moreReserved for a party of 15 🥲 which is a lot to ask for on a Saturday night but they pulled through forreal.
They placed us in the back karaoke room which was lowkey kinda awkward to sit in since the table was round and if anyone had to use the bathroom, multiple people had to move out of the way. And the karaoke machine was hard to figure out with the language barrier but meh that's not what we were there for.
We were there for the SUSHIIIII idk how they do it but their fish tastes so fresh (idk if it actually is) with no sinew, no inconsistencies in texture, or fishy taste. The sushi rolls are so bomb too, it's kind of suspicious. Like how are you keeping the price semi cheap with this quality?? What kind of games are you playing 🤨
Service was amazing too! Cindy is a sweetheart and got all of our party's orders despite how busy it was with all the other tables she was serving. Hope you're doing well girl!!
Anyways, this is a great place to have a little dinner!! Total came out to around $550, not including tip. This included appetizers, everyone's meals, and also some drinks that...
Read moreDuring our last trip to Honolulu this spot was run under different ownership—it was pretty quiet and dark (lighting too low?) but the food was still tasty. This time around the place seemed more vibrant, good music, staff/service was great (esp the sushi bar chefs, they were amazing!) and DELICIOUS sushi! For 4 of us, we ordered the sushi boat for 3 and 2 additional rolls and it was just the right amount of food. We also got lychee martinis and they tasted so good I thought there might’ve not been any alcohol, ha! The sushi boat artistry was unreal, notably our sashimi bowl that was “smoking” lol. My favorite, however, was a hamachi roll with fried garlic on top… SO ONO! 11/10 will come...
