My experience at The Wayfarer Downtown LA, Tapestry Collection by Hilton was deeply disappointing. I’ll never stay there again and I recommend you avoid the establishment - do yourself the favor! The staff was nice, things seemed clean and the bed was comfortable but that’s where my good comments end. After flying across the country, I was looking forward to having a nice, relaxing rest in the room I would call home for 3 nights. Well, relaxing didn’t happen. As one does and should do, I went to wash my hands the moment I got into the room and I noticed that the water wasn’t getting warm/hot (this seems to be an ongoing issue that others have mentioned in previous reviews… read them for your own good. I checked the shower… same issue. I called downstairs and called Priceline who I booked the room through. The receptionist told me the hotel was full and that many people might be using the hot water. He also said he noted the issue and that if not fixed by the morning the hotel would have to call the “engineer,” he also said that maybe they could switch me to another room, which I thought was interesting. If I don’t have hot water, why would another room have hot water? Hot water usually comes from the same source, unless the pipes are corroded on my side of the hotel… not sure what the issue was. Also, please note, the next morning when heading to the elevator, I saw a woman and her two children leaving the room next to mine. I asked her if she had hot water and she and her kids said they didn’t, she was annoyed by it and said, “what are we paying for?” The woman and her kids were checking out because they had their luggage. I wish they could have taken me with them! To add insult to injury, the room I stayed in… had frosted windows facing outside. I’m used to a hotel room which you can’t open the windows but not windows you can’t even look out of, it gives the feeling of being in solitary confinement/jail. And to add a slap in the face to the injury, the windows are thin and allow air and noise to come in which isn’t ideal because, my room seemed to be right over a kitchen (not sure if it’s the hotel kitchen) exhaust fan so you get to smell greasy food being cooked at all hours along with hearing whatever foolishness is happening on the street (yelling, talking, loud cars with exhaust pipes, the crash of trash being loaded into a trash truck at 4am EVERY MORNING etc.) You might ask yourself, “why didn’t you leave?” or “did you call the front desk back so they could move you or call the engineer?” I didn’t leave because I was on a strict time crunch with professional and personal obligations - I didn’t have the time to move my stuff and beg the front desk (whether via phone or in-person) to call a so called “engineer” to fix a problem that they are clearly aware of and don’t care or have the power to do something about. I came to do stuff in LA, not get a hotel to operate correctly. Another thing regarding the lack of hot water, I’m not sure how a hotel with a restaurant is allowed to operate without hot water... a restaurant without hot water seems like a code violation, it’s unsanitary and should be looked into by the LA County Department of Public Health. I’ve never been so happy to check out of a hotel in my life! I’m sure if the hotel chooses to respond, they will deny all of this or come up with excuses, but hey, that’s the nature of customer service in 2024.
Please take a look at the video which lets you hear the garbage trucks at 4am. You can also see pictures of the shower running set to “hot” for 10 minutes BUT the glass isn’t fogged up because there was NO hot water! I always give honest opinions that reflect my experience so I hope this review is helpful to you. Don’t stay at this hotel.
I plan to follow up with Hilton and Priceline....
Read moreI had a recent stay at the hotel. First impression is a throwback to Old Los Angeles with old buildings and a speakeasy type motif. The neighborhood that is in could be a lot better. There are a bunch of homeless people that are roaming the sidewalks and one night one of them was outside screaming for an hour until we had to call the police to get them out of there. If you're planning on doing tourist things at night using Uber it is a safer bet.
The hotel itself is nice on the interior. It seems to be well kept. The front desk when we arrive was very helpful and accommodating and getting us settled. The room itself was nice a throwback to a 1930s 1940s kind of decor. It's not your typical hotel room. The bed itself is basically on the floor and the shower bathroom area is a decor of the 1940s with some modern features. We were on the 8th floor and the views are not spectacular. One view is a rooftop of the another building and the other side was a street view with the 7-Eleven and homeless people. Have two restaurants in the property one serves breakfast on a limited basis but mostly it's breakfast sandwiches muffins and pastries and coffees. The rooftop restaurant opens at 10:00 a.m. and has a Southwest brunch type menu. The food at the hotel is expensive but it's a really good quality and a lot of it is made from scratch. I had a corn meal waffle that was top notch. My only improvement would be instead of using sugar water breakfast syrup would be to step it up and use real maple syrup.
My cons of the property? When we tried to order from the kids menu at the rooftop restaurant which was the only things on the menu that we were interested in they tried to charge us an extra $5 a dish. There's no mention on the menu of any age restriction or additional charges. The speakeasy bar call the lily which was advertised on their website as a restaurant speakeasy bar and live entertainment venue was permanently closed on Thanksgiving. Unfortunately their website was never updated to reflect this change and we were very disappointed that it took reservations knowing that the bar was going to be permanently closed. Also the hotel does not have a pool or gym facility. Neighborhood is not the nicest. That's not the hotels fault but making reservations people should know the type of area they're getting in. There are plenty of homeless people roaming the streets and congregating at the 7-Eleven across the street. The hotel does hire private security at the front door to keep undesirables out. My other con is hotel maintenance. The outside of the windows are filthy and haven't been washed in months or years. I think that's a detail where they should hire a company to come and wash all the windows on a regular basis.
Overall it's a good property especially if you're going to a game or plan on visiting the LA live...
Read moreBooked and paid for the hotel online (or so I thought). When reserving a room, we were quoted $165/ night resulting in a total of less than $700 for a check in on monday and check out thursday. When arriving at the hotel, we were being charged an additional $300+ at the check in desk because of a '$100 deposit' for each night that was promised to be returned upon check out. First of many disappointments. First off, we reserved this hotel specifically for the rooftop, and to our luck, it was raining and they closed the rooftop. Not their fault, so they offered to give us a reservation for the "Lily Rose". The day of our reservation, they canceled it. With no real reason. I was beginning to think that this rooftop and this Lily Rose did not even exist. The rooms are very small for anymore than 2 people. Pack light because you won't have room to put anything in the room. The bathroom gives you no privacy, you can hear everything in there... They are so gracious to provide you with two water bottles each day. Unfortunately, the water tastes gross because it is in a cardboard box. Their is no fridge in the room, so if you have things that need to be stored cold, you need to take it downstairs for them to put in their fridge.. ok. The TV gives you like 4 channels, the chrome cast to link your phone doesn't even work. Thankfully, we had our laptop and hooked an HDMI cable to even get to watch anything decent. Here is the real kicked, upon check out.. you guessed it, the price I promised when booking online somehow changed. Upon looking at my receipt, they somehow managed to INCREASE EACH NIGHT'S ROOM RATE. How do these places even get away with scamming people like this. One night was $162 (which is what was told online) and then another night $176 and another night $204. NOT including the random $20/night "amenity fee" -- what amenity are you referring to? The rooftop that you wouldn't let us on? The Lily Rose that canceled our reservation for no reason? Funny thing is that when we were at the front desk asking for our water donation, someone asked the girl at the front where lily rose is...almost as if she had a reservation, even though just an hour prior, we got a call saying our reservation was canceled. makes sense. There is also a "occupancy fee" that ranged from $22-$28 each night. I'm sorry... aren't I paying $160+ a night to OCCUPY the room? I called to follow up on this ridiculous bill and of course received no help from the girl on the phone. When I asked the girl why each night was a different rate, she says "it depends on if there is events going on, blah blah blah". Soooo... what events are you talking about? You canceled everything. What am I being charged for? Of course, with her attitude, I could tell I am going nowhere with her. Long story short, Do yourself a favor, book...
