My family and I went in and I tried to buy a small bottle of sake. I'm pretty sure I've bought alcohol with this same cashier before, a man around his late 50s. Usually, I don't mind if someone isn't that friendly with customers, as is common in lots of downtown LA, so I didnt mind his demeanor. I asked my sister if she could pay with her card since I didn't want to spend too much of my cash and my check hadn't gone through yet, so she did, and then he said he needed to see her ID (in a pretty rude way). So my sister said that she didn't bring it. It was understandable for him to ask. My sister was now paying so it made sense. But I feel that he should have asked for her ID before, yet he asked for it after she had already put in her pin. My sister asked for proof of it being voided. That's when he started to become more rude. He took a while to show proof of the void. He seemed to be annoyed with my sister and vice versa all because she asked for proof that she wasn't being charged. I then decided to pay with my own cash when some of my other family members got in line, trying to buy their own things, and he said that now he needed to see all of their IDs for me to purchase this one small bottle of sake, even if it was a separate purchase. I could tell by the look on his face that he did it to get back at my sister and I (I didn't even argue with him) which I found to be extremely unprofessional. I've worked many years in customer service, and I have never been this rude. I've also purchased alcohol before with this same man with my brother right beside me, and he had never before asked for my brother's ID. Another one of my siblings said that another worker rudely handed them their receipt after. I usually love this market and love being in Little Tokyo, and it's sad that there are condescending people working there while so many kind, honest people are looking for work. I rarely ever post reviews on anything, but I thought I should post this because this level of pettiness is uncalled for and I believe that management should hold people accountable for being straight up rude. Unless one of them was the manager, in which case, I guess customers can see what they're dealing with beforehand. I still somewhat love Nijiya but I feel that people are more friendly across the...
Read moreThis place is a nice little grocery store in Little Tokyo. However, when it came time to check out, and I had a $50 order, you can clearly see the ego setting in for this place.
I simply wanted to purchase two cans of Sapporo in addition to my order. The clerk got the manager to look over my Toronto drivers license…. And then he proceeded to tell me that I need my passport to purchase anything alcohol related. This is insulting and absurd and clearly rude, and an egotistical nature sitting in with how busy they are. So needless to say, I was not able to purchase alcohol from the store because I had a drivers license that was not a California drivers license.. never in my life have I been denied alcohol purchase in California because of my Toronto drivers license. I can’t even believe how absurd that is. Im 47 years old turning 48 in August.
So we went next-door and we sat down on the patio and I had three ice cold Sapporo's showing my Toronto drivers license with no problem at all. This grocery really left a sour taste...
Read moreGreat store, you definitely find some unique items, nothing you can,t find at Marukai market, maybe a little less expensive.
Last time I got a Saki that was priced at 15.99 but at the register it came up as 19.99.
They workers at the register are polite and courteous, but when they call for management, that person is rude AF. No customer service skills, could be a cultural barrier 🤷♂️
However they did fix the price , but they give you attitude, and say it's the wrong tag...well sounds like your problem.
Otherwise check them out.
My favorite thing to buy here is the golden yolk extra large egg.
Everything else check out Marukai market first, it's 2 min down the road (walking) from this place.
Hope you find this...
