I know it's been a trying time with the pandemic but, this used to me one of my favorite spots in Reno. The food was decent and inexpensive, the service was good with some of the employees but now, they've gone downhill. I get there's new employees but, train them on customer service. I mean, when you call the "Grille" to place an order and you hear them put the phone down but don't even greet the caller and you hear the workers talking and you keep saying, hello, hello. Finally, I had to call the Cage for them to transfer me. I figured, maybe if they see it is an internal transfer they would pick up. Guess what! They did. So, when I go in to pick up order, I explain to someone new (female) actually wearing a badge (forgot her name) but it said "cashier" and I explained what happened when I called 5 times, she blew me off. No apology, no lie, nothing. Proper thing to say to me after I told her my dilemna about the phone situation would have been, "I'm sorry that happened. I don't know why, but I will look into it or tell someone about it and to possibly check the phone. You know why she didn't say anything because she was probably the one picking up the phone when I kept calling to place an order and left me hanging. I don't go as much to play there or eat. I've had one to many unpleasant situations there. 1) where's a security guard when you need one. there were people arguing and I thought were going to fight. I cashed out my machine and left. Didn't want to be in the crosshairs with that. 2) there's still shady people walking through there asking for a cigarette, money and trying to sell you something. GD doesn't see that but, us customers do. 3) Food prices have gone up but quality of food has gone downhill. It's really, really hard to mess up a sandwich order. When it happens 3 times in a row. Gotta go somewhere else. 4) I don't sit at the bar and play but I'm sitting elsewhere and hear other patrons taking loudly about political stuff and inappropriate topics and I'm uncomfortable and wishing someone would tell them politely to change the conversation. Nope. Bartenders chime right in with them. This has happened so many times before. I choose to not watch tv with the current climate and go to the GD to play. Enough is enough. Plus, you hear the drink servers talk about the "new" servers. I won't say the persons name but you can guess, they've been there longer than the new ones. REALLY! Not cool to let your customers hear your conversations about how you're upset today because of that person, that person. But get this, they're actually complaining to a customer. WOW!. Don't get me wrong. There are a few good people/workers in that establishment that say hello when you walk in and friendly. That is the Casino Mgrs., some of the porters, some of the servers in Grille. But, do better now Gold Dust. Get it together and match your "motto" we hear on the radio and tv about your friendly place to play, etc. Really Own IT!
Maybe, they will improve again one day but for now, I found somewhere else to spend my money and unfortunately, so have other friends who concur with my...
Read moreI have gone to this restaurant for 23 years as it is very close to my house. Back in the day it was wonderful. A very broad menu and something for everyone. Great food ALWAYS and great service. Customers felt welcome and appreciated. Then Jacob Entertainment bought GDW and ruined the restaurant. Food still ok but much more limited menu. Then came THE RULES. No takeout during pandemic unless paid for with slot points. No substitutions. $2 charge for meal to go (if not purchased with slot points) even when meal ordered in connection with a group of people having dinner at the casino. The restaurant has been routinely understaffed. Countless times when the restaurant is nearly empty (4:00 pm) we have to wait twenty minutes or more for a table while waiting for staff to begin a shift.
I have heard that the restaurant recently was sold by Jacob back to the original owner. The restaurant has not been changed back to what it was. They did buy new chairs as had Jacob. Nothing like a good chair while a business treats you are not the desired type of customer.
If it were up to me I would have stopped going to the restaurant years ago. But my partner likes certain things there. During all the years I never had a serious complaint about the food. But last week I ordered a pancake for dinner. I have never previously rated pancakes for quality as they are pretty much the same anywhere. This was the worst pancake of my life. It was overcooked on outside and undercooked in the middle. It tasted funny. Then last night I ordered a white meat chicken salad sandwich. I am not a picky eater but do eat only white meat. The sandwich was half dark meat despite the menu saying white meat. The sandwich was WATERY which doesn’t sound possible but is true. There was no mayonnaise taste. It was completely unseasoned such that I who never adds salt had to try to salt it. The meat was not all in small pieces. The $11 or $12 sandwich had a sliver of a tomato slice. It was a NASTY sandwich. I tore it apart looking for smidgeons of white meat to pick at. When the waitress inquired I said the things I am saying here. They did comp the sandwich.
My point is that the restaurant has gone downhill over the years and now apparently discourages non players from eating there via its policies toward non players. But now twice in two weeks I have had bad food. Both times so bad as to merit “worst pancake ever” and “worst sandwich ever”. Not just worst chicken sandwich but worst sandwich ever in my life. I’m already trying to figure out what I can eat there that they can’t ruin in the kitchen the next time my partner wants to go. They do have good French fries. I’m thinking the tuna sandwich as that is basically drained tuna...

On a bustling evening in Reno, I decided to try my luck not at the slots or tables, but at the Gold Dust West Casino Restaurant. The establishment, known for its old Nevada charm, promised a straightforward dining experience.
Upon entering, the atmosphere was reminiscent of classic Reno, with the faint sound of slot machines chiming in the background. The decor, a blend of nostalgia and comfort, set the stage for what I hoped would be a hearty meal.
The service was a mixed bag. While our server was friendly and efficient, the time it took to get my meal, left leaving something to be desired in the hospitality department. It felt like a missed opportunity to elevate the dining experience from just another meal to something more memorable.
The menu offered the usual suspects one would expect at a casino diner – nothing out of the ordinary, but reliable. With the suggestion from our server, I opted for the prime rib sandwich, a staple of the house. For the time it took to get my meal one would think that it would be better, yet it lacked the juiciness and flavor that would have made it stand out. The accompanying sides were adequate but unremarkable, they don't offer onion rings as a side, but offer them on their western burger apparently.
One aspect that did catch my attention was the pricing. The value was reasonable, and for those looking for a no-frills meal without a hefty price tag, this could be a draw.
However, the ambiance was marred slightly by the permeating cigarette smoke from the casino floor, which might be off-putting for non-smokers and detracted from the overall dining experience.
In conclusion, the Gold Dust West Casino Restaurant delivered an experience akin to a safe bet – it satisfied basic expectations without any surprises, good or bad. It’s the kind of place you might stop by when you’re already there, but not a destination in its own right.
Rating: 3 stars – “A safe bet for a straightforward meal, but don’t gamble on...
