I'm a Salem resident and I am on a mission to experience everything that Salem has to offer.
The Witchery is a shop in downtown Salem at Pickering Wharf, where you can attend unique workshops such as the one I took the other day: broom making! You can reserve a spot online, when you will pick the size of your broom. Mine was small and I think the perfect size for displaying it on a table or on the wall, of for traveling if you are visiting. I was not sure exactly what to expect, but I must say I truly enjoyed this workshop!
First you pick your materials. Be aware that, included in the price of the ticket, are the basic elements of your broom + 3 charms, while the rest is available for extra charge. The instructor was super friendly and helpful, and she showed me in steps how to assemble and decorate my broom. The process did involve more craftsmanship than I expected! I was the only one at the workshop, not surprisingly since it was a Tuesday afternoon in February. I am sure, though, that these workshops can get very busy on tourist season.
The space was very cozy and the atmosphere super relaxing. It took me about an hour to complete my broom.
PROs Very unique! Very "Salem". This is an activity that I really, truly recommend if you are visiting, since you will end up with a unique keepsake. Also, as I mentioned, it is a relaxing, very satisfying, no-pressure activity.
CONs Not a real con, just an heads-up to factor in, within the total price of the experience, the fact that you will probably want to buy some extra items to make the broom more special. Flowers, colors splashes, little jars, special charms etc are available for...
Read moreWhat hospitable, fun and informative folks! I’m in my 30s, but finally getting a chance to genuinely pursue my interest in magick, and related arts/crafts. On a spontaneous visit to Salem this weekend, I decided to visit The Witchery and try their crafting offerings.
Do call ahead and make sure you can book your time! Luckily they had the last spot before closing when I called.
I was warmly greeted by name on arrival, and personally oriented to the crafting options and materials by Gret, one of the owners. When I explained what I was interested in and some of the intentions I wanted to incorporate into my project, Gret personally did research using books and internet to help me find just the right materials to energetically realize my piece (a mini-broom). In fact, when we found that bay leaves might make a good addition, she waited for me to go next door and buy some, because she was out! She really seemed to care that I be able to make an authentic piece that I could be proud of. It was fun too because she really likes to learn new things, and so we got to enjoy that thrill together as we researched. She patiently helped me talk through my ideas, too, until I had a clear sense of vision. It was like I had a friendly, genuine mentor for the session- not just some cashier waiting for me to glue up something and pay for it.
So if you’re looking for a more personal, mindful, engaging touch to your visit to Salem, head over and make some arts and crafts at...
Read moreI was so looking forward to this; I reserved all the way back in June. My partner and I planned a trip to Salem and I’ve been dying to try the broom making class. After reviewing their store policy I gave them a call and asked if I paid for my partners seat (50$ ) they would be guaranteed a seat even if they did not wish to participate. We were told this was okay as long as we paid for the seat. Upon arrival we were told they had to either purchase a broom or leave the store. I explained, clearly confused that I was told if we paid for the seat they could stay. The sales rep who was not a part of the broom making tutorial was very rude and said “we had signed a terms and conditions and should’ve read the policy”. If I’m planning a trip from all the way in June of course I’m doing my homework? I asked could he wait inside as it’s chilly in October and we’re told no he must wait outside. I had to request the 50$ deposit back as it was not offered after the confusion. So ridiculous and truly hurt the experience. I hope the blonde woman at the register learns a thing or two about customer service. Of course she deserves decency, but so do we. I’ll be sure to tell everyone I know about their conflicting store policies and inconsistent decisions. And especially their cold demeanor....
