My visit to the Beach Institute in Savannah was an truly incredible experience, highlighted by an exceptional tour guide. I consider myself a history enthusiast, but I was genuinely astonished by how many new things I learned during my time there. A remarkable 95% of the information shared was entirely fresh to me, revealing aspects of history that are simply not taught elsewhere.

I left the institute feeling humbled in the most profound way, yet also enriched and eager to delve deeper. The insights gained were so compelling that I departed with a comprehensive reading list, a testament to the depth and breadth of knowledge imparted. The exhibits were fascinating, particularly the in-depth research and display on jockeys, which shed light on a often-overlooked yet significant part of history.

The Beach Institute is far more than just a museum; it's a vital center for African-American arts, history, and cultural preservation. It stands as a testament to the resilience and contributions of a community whose stories deserve to be heard and celebrated. This institution is an absolute must-visit for anyone traveling to Savannah, offering a unique and deeply impactful perspective on American history and culture. It's an experience that will stay with you long...

The Beach Institute African-American Cultural Center of Savannah, GA is a premiere museum and art gallery featuring African-American Art and Exhibitions. The spouse and I visited them on February 14th approximately around 11am when they had just opened. The young lady that was working on the morning gave us an quick speech about the history of the building.

On the bottom floor there is a small gift shop, and then there is 3 floors of art collections. The building does have a small courtyard behind the building, which would be very nice seating and enjoying the sunny weather. There is also a 3 private visitor parking spaces behind the building and street parking nearby. The building does have an elevator and is handicapped accessible to the second and third floor.

The architecture of the building is very well maintained and is in excellent condition considering the buildings age. The art artifacts was kind of overwhelming because they have some much, so I would plan accordingly so you don't have to rush thru.

I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys African American history and I would definitely...

The Beach Institute was on my list of must see places in Savannah! Before going in we wandered around outside the entire bldg and took a few pics. They do have a backyard courtyard for entry inside center. The lovely courtyard has some benches for relaxing. I arrived approx. 11AM and we had the culture center to ourselves. The staff gave us some history and explained everything to us. Parking was available on the side of street.

There are 3 floors consisting of art work and sculptures of AAM history. There is a small gift shop when you enter thru the back door. The Beach Institute was the first official school for African Americans in Savannah, GA. Today it is used as a cultural center and a preservation center. We took our time and viewed everything on all the floors. The bldg. is well kept and will be enjoyed for yrs to come!

I recommend you put this gem on your Savannah to do list! Its well...

Spending time with Jonathan Winbush, CEO of The Beach Institute African-American Cultural Center was a privilege and a joy. His life long erudition, passion and experience within the context of African American history - locally, nationally and internationally - is profound and seemingly boundless. His guided tour of the several galleries and exhibits on-site were very enjoyable and informative. Thank you again Jon for a memorable experience!

Must see! Excited to visit again for one of their galas and or artist talk exhibitions! Full of interesting botanical and garden information. Perfect for anyone trying to understand Black people‘s relationship with the land in Savannah. Also, cool information on black jockeys and Cowboys. A gorgeous gallery of local artist and community members. A garden to sit in and chat with friends!

Visiting the first school for African American children in Savannah. As a former Principal, I felt honored to be in the space. I learned a lot that I never knew I didn't know. I suggest people join the African American Freedom Trail Tour when you come visit. Everyday 1pm and 3pm. They meet at the Savannah Visitors Center.
