Stopped in for a Friday lunch. I like to try a sushi place on Thursday night or Friday afternoon because this usually when the fish is freshest. First thing we noticed that the place was fairly empty during prime lunch time, several tables were sitting dirty and the floor was super sticky. Some of the staff stood right out in the middle of the dining floor watching the TV while tables sat dirty and un-bussed.
We ordered a simple lunch combo and an order of nigiri with jalapeño. I understand there are different ways to freeze fish and different qualities of fish. The tuna delivered to my fiancé and me on Friday was horrible. It was a very pale pink and had a mealy texture as opposed to velvety. Just gross. There were stacks and stacks of this tuna wrapped and stacked in the sushi cooler.
We asked about the jalapeño nigiri. Neither of the servers knew what the jalapeño nigiri even consisted of. It ended up being a horribly conceived, hard to eat and poorly executed dish. One half of a large, whole jalapeño (deseeded) spread with some cream cheese concoction (not mentioned in the server description) rice, tobiko and a very large piece of the poor quality tuna. The order consisted of two pieces that were near impossible to eat. The jalapeño was thick and the bad tuna had way too many of the white lines in it that would not break upon biting. The tuna just separated from the lines and was all mushy leaving just the white fibers hanging from the bitten piece.
The combos we ordered had some basic rolls and chef's choice nigiri. The salmon and whitefish that nigiri were delivered were large portions, but just not good quality fish. I would rather pay for better fish and less quantity any day. The combo came with a large, depressing bowl of ice berg lettuce covered in standard ginger dressing and a bowl of "soup" that tasted like college ramen without the noodles.
It was the server's first day and he was nice if a little lacking in knowledge. He had the manager take off the jalapeño-tuna thing. I have lived downtown for years and visited Ta Ca when it first opened. At least I know I have not been missing anything and definitely not recommending...
Read moreI really wanted this to be a good meal and I should have listened to my intuition when we walked up and saw the place but we were hungry. Disclaimer: I have worked in sushi restaurants before.
The food itself is fine. I've had better sushi at that price point. The $15 rolls are as big as the $7 rolls, so save your money and just get the salmon avocado roll. Points for presentation. But nothing terribly special or even tasty about the 36 (seriously) "specialty rolls".
We also had a bowl of ramen that tasted like it was straight out of a package. Not recommended. Kind of expected this, given that this is a sushi place, but seriously no effort into making this a good dish. They put a jumbo fried shrimp on top of it all which was soggy by the time it reached the table. Who puts that in a ramen bowl??
The interior looked like it used to be a Mexican restaurant and, now being a sushi joint, is having a serious identity crisis. Formica tables, a scuffed painted floor, garishly colored walls, no fewer than five TVs all playing something different, and only one of them with subtitles. The strip lighting was also rather confusing and I had to change seats so I wasn't being blinded by their beams. Oh, and two large brown leather loveseats that look like they'll swallow you sit by the front door. Who knows where they came from.
In terms of service, our waitress was lovely, responsive, and hopeful about our meal. We decided not to share our disappointment with her because at that point, in our famished condition, we had consumed everything with only a few audible grunts to acknowledge to each other the lackluster everything about the food and the environs.
This place could use one of those TV chef interventions, a therapist, and an interior decorator.
I'm giving it 4 stars because they had a decent list of sakes. If you haven't tried the Funaguchi Kikusui, it's delicious and it comes in a can. The cans are good for storing things and they're cute in that...
Read moreMe and my boyfriend used to eat here all the time about a year ago when we lived downtown. So much so that some of the friendly staff recognized us when we were out downtown watching a local band play. We still eat here when we come in to town and it is one of our favorite locations. It is always clean, we have never had bad service, and the food is always great!
We usually order a teriyaki combo and occasionally get sushi and drinks. They have a full bar (One of the few places downtown that doesn't JUST serve beer...) and they have some great original drinks and also make some good classics(or anything you want).
This is a great place to come after work and relax with friends and have a good time. The food is good and served in large portions, the atmosphere is chill and the drinks are fun and unique. With all of this to offer it seems like it hardly needs mentioning, but the prices are low. Ive eaten at take out places that are more expensive, but this place is much higher quality than that!
I highly recommend this place, admittedly we rarely get the sushi, but when we do it is good and fresh and their other dishes are always spot on! I feel like the few bad reviews must have been a rare bad employee or something... (Also, most of those bad reviews were written 3 years ago...)
UPDATE: Just went here last night and the service was great! It was a sunday night so not many customers and our waiter, THOMAS, was hilarious! If you can, request him every time! He spent extra time with us and made sure we always had everything we needed, while telling us some great...
