This is a bit of a blast from the past but I visited Seattle back in August 2017 from Florida and fell in love instantly. A core memory of mine was being in the Seattle Center for a convention that my brother dragged me to and I left the arena. I randomly stumbled upon a music festival happening at the mural where I discovered Haley Heynderickx playing to a sea of people laying on the grass and enjoying music. I’d never felt more at peace in a city before. I finally visited again at the beginning of April and the love is still there. It’s a strange feeling when you leave a place that you’re not from and start feeling homesick. I never got that feeling leaving Florida. I definitely want to call Seattle home someday.

We went for the KEXP at the Mural concert series. The space is perfect for live music. Get there early to grab a seat at the shade (which might be more important the hotter in August it is)!! We like that there is easy food to grab from the armory or to pick up a picknic at met market.

The Mural Amphitheatre, located within the Seattle Center, is an iconic outdoor performance venue known for its vibrant atmosphere and rich cultural significance. Nestled in the heart of Seattle, this amphitheater offers a unique setting for a variety of events, from concerts and festivals to community gatherings and cultural celebrations. Its striking mural backdrop and central location make it a beloved spot for both locals and visitors.

Design and Features: The Mural Amphitheatre is named for the striking mural that serves as its backdrop. Created by artist Paul Horiuchi, the mural is an impressive mosaic that adds a splash of color and artistic flair to the venue. The amphitheater itself features a grassy, sloped seating area that can accommodate a large audience, providing an intimate yet spacious environment for enjoying live performances.

The open-air design of the amphitheater allows for a relaxed and casual atmosphere, perfect for enjoying Seattle's mild summer evenings. The stage is equipped with the necessary facilities to host a range of performances, including concerts, theater productions, and dance shows.

Historical Significance: The mural that gives the amphitheater its name was created for the 1962 World's Fair, which significantly shaped the development of Seattle Center. Paul Horiuchi's mosaic mural is a testament to the artistic and cultural aspirations of that era, blending modernist influences with traditional Japanese techniques. The mural and the amphitheater itself are reminders of Seattle's rich cultural history and commitment to the arts.

Visitor Experience: Visitors to the Mural Amphitheatre can expect a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere. The sloped lawn seating allows for comfortable viewing of the stage from various vantage points. The open-air design provides a sense of freedom and relaxation, perfect for enjoying live performances under the sky.

The amphitheater's location within Seattle Center means it is surrounded by other attractions, such as the Space Needle, the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP), and the Pacific Science Center. This makes it easy to combine a visit to the amphitheater with exploring other cultural and recreational offerings in the area.

Accessibility and Amenities: The Mural Amphitheatre is easily accessible by public transportation, with several bus routes and the Seattle Center Monorail providing convenient access. Parking is available nearby for those driving. The Seattle Center grounds are well-equipped with amenities, including restrooms, food vendors, and picnic areas, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable visit.

Seattle Center’s Mural Amphitheatre is an iconic yet simple grass lawn hill facing a stage and nestled below the world renowned Space Needle. The glass mosaic mural that backs the stage and gives the space it’s name was designed by American painter and collagist, Paul Horiuchi (1906–1999), and is his most publicly recognized work.

The amphitheater serves as a venue for concerts during the major summer festivals as well as KEXP’s Concerts at the Mural. But it’s also a popular spot for relaxation and fun on quieter days and evenings when the...
