Battery Garland — Attraction in Tybee Island

Great Experience at Tybee Island Light Station & Museum!!! August 2024

My wife and I recently visited the Tybee Island Light Station & Museum from our riverfront hotel in downtown Savannah, Georgia. The drive was a pleasant and quick 25-minute journey. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a friendly guard at the parking lot entrance, who directed us to get our tickets. On-site parking is conveniently located at the base of the lighthouse, allowing visitors to park for approximately two hours.

Our visit also included a tour of the museum and the original guard houses at the base of the lighthouse. Each house took about 30 minutes to explore and provided interesting historical insights. We were fortunate to meet Don, a helpful and knowledgeable gentleman at the museum. Don gave us a brief, five-minute private tour, explaining the workings of the artillery and how ammunition was brought in through the gates at the front of the museum. His enthusiasm and expertise added a special touch to our visit.

While we didn't get a chance to visit the beach this time, it's definitely on our to-do list for our next trip. We recommend street parking or using the nearby beach parking lot for a more...

Fort Screven is much larger than just this gun battery which a lot of people seem to not understand. From a historical preservation standpoint this battery was in rough shape. When it was converted to a museum in the 1960s they made a lot of crude modifications to the structure and added a lot of ugly additions that ruin the structure. The museum has some interesting artifacts but it the engineers that installed the ventilation system do not know how concrete works (it sweats) and it smelled damp. The view from on top of the blast apron is very nice and you can get photos of the Tybee light station. I would recommend it only if you plan on going to the lighthouse since access to the museum is included with the lighthouse tickets. What a wonderful museum tucked away in the actual battery. I learned a lot about Tybee Island and its history. I was wondering where Savanah Beach was and learned the name changed years ago and then they changed it back again to Tybee Island. They allow you to go to the top of the battery and see where the old guns were fired from and it’s a nice view of the beach. They also have lots of memorabilia from the era. I also enjoyed the history video as well. Lots of signage and things to look at. Down in the basement they have a room set up with memorabilia from the old carnival boardwalk that is no longer in existence. The most impressive rifle they have is 13 foot long and you can get up close to it. Considering you get both museums for $10 this is a great price. This is also an UNESCO sight as well.
