HORRIBLE experience at Tybee Island beach!
We paid $3.5 for 1 hr parking at Ticket machine, parked where everyone/car parked, placed the paid receipt on Dashboard, spent just roughly 25 mins exploring the Beach, came back 20 mins before Paid Parking expired at 4:46pm, and received $75 CITATION ($95 if not paid within 10 days).
I sent photos of paid Parking and Citation to Tybee, politely asked to void the Citation, reasoning if someone honestly paid the Parking time, that person had no intention to do anything not legal unless didn't know, paid attention, etc due to being a Tourist, then a "Warning" or "Notice" should be given, not a Citation (as it is only meant for deliberate violation). Request declined!
We really made BIG mistake this “single time” since many times in the past we always went to Hilton Head Island (visited Savannah 4 times and only went to Tybee this time) even though Georgia residents. Right after the Citation, we kind of get feeling it was deliberately exploited at visitors, we decided to leave Tybee right away without spending a single more penny (had reservation at A-J Dock restaurant). As mentioned, we paid 1 hour but left the Beach after just 25 mins since the Beach was smelly, shallowed, the farthest ends of the piers were not in water at the time because they were short, etc.
We’ll continue go to Hilton Head (free parking, clean Beach, showers, more upscale, etc) and similar advice to anyone visiting the Savannah surroundings and want a Beach. This one-time mistake (visiting Tybee Island), for us, would mean (to our hearts) never ever...
Read moreExtremely disappointed about the “southern hospitality” everyone promised. Went to the beach at about 1ish set up with our family next to other fishers. Everyone was helping each other out, talking, being friendly. Then around 5pm a big group of surfers came in, purposely hitting the lines, the fishers, and being aggressive. When asked nicely if they could be more careful we were all told “No. That’s where the waves are. We live here. If you don’t like it you can leave.” Afterwards they were pointing at us and saying racial slurs and commenting on some of my family’s weight, such incredibly disrespectful, if you’re poc or don’t fit their “beauty standards” they’ll be sure to let you know how they feel. Again we had been here for hours already and everyone was having a good time until they showed up. They also told the other fishers to get out and almost broke a girl’s rod which was very expensive. It turned from 2 surfers to about 24 literally trying to hit people, or jumping off the boards seconds before hitting toddlers on the shores to run them off. They weren’t even good waves that these people were fighting for, someone should take them to south florida and show them some real hospitality and waves. Extremely sad that this is how the “locals” treat the people around. Especially since we had to make such a long drive off base just to be told to get out and leave. Again don’t recommend going...
Read moreStopped for a night on Tybee Island while on a 3k mile road trip. Do not recommend if you have pets. We went for a run in the morning with our dog and ended up with a $250 ticket. Dogs aren't allowed on the beach, fair enough, but this was listed fourth on a sign of many rules (seen after the fact) and enforced with an immediate ticket. My experience has been that when dogs aren't allowed on a trail or beach, there's a sign saying specifically that and didn't see such a sign. I don't typically stop mid-run to read a list of rules about swimming and not littering. The person who stopped us did not just ask us to to leave the beach with our dog, which would have been fine, but instead immediately gave us a ticket. If you're going to have a rule that differs from a standard assumption of keep your dog leashed and clean up after them, you should make it very clear. There were tons of signs indicating not to enter the dune area. Why isn't the dog rule labeled in a similar fashion? Also, there weren't enough sidewalks in town to make a run or walk pleasant for multiple miles in the area where we were staying. We ended up having to run in the street most of the time once we got...
