Every time I go here, I enjoy it a little bit more. This time was for the Tour De Fat. The event was great, but it's always the area an event is in that determines how great the event will be.
This park is fairly large, with two plots of green grass, a giant fountain and a huge catch-basin for the water.
Let's talk about this fountain/basin! The local kids flock here during the heat because 1) it's hot and 2) parents love something that entertains their kids for a LONG time...zen moments! The catch basin is also pretty large and about a foot deep and people will wade through it (such as at Tour De Fat) as well as kids. It "smells" like chlorinated water, so I'd be willing to be it was mildly treated before being pumped out, so don't be scared! Also, they keep the basin pretty clean during the warmer months.
The boardwalk is probably the best one in DC...because it's the only one that I know about. It has awesome lights at night on the bridge, and there are many more eateries and spots opening up along the water and in the other buildings, especially as more housing pops up around it.
There are two green plots full of grass. One will even have free concerts every Friday during the warmer months! They sell beer too! Food trucks show up! #Party
Now, the most important part. This is PRIVATE LAND!! This is now some park owned by DC or the Feds. That being said, they have AMAZING rules here. Outdoor alcohol! They sell it, even! Blue Jacket brewery, next door, will bring over beer on Fridays and sell it. You can then walk around the ENTIRE PARK area and enjoy some drinking without the oppressive DC or Federal laws breathing down your neck. Because we're all adults here ;) minus the kids...
Read moreThis park finally captures the Spirit of Washington DC and its citizens. After the Washington Nationals and park park was put in, in, the navy yard waterfront park seems to have organically developed and drawn in residents of all types from around the city. I grew up living around dc my entire life and I have never felt more at home anywhere in the world Then sitting in this park. I stayed for hours come off then I rented a lime scooter and explored Even more! I was just meeting a friend and ended up staying To take it all in for over 4 hours. It was designed perfectly, lots of public areas with with hidden gems of private sitting areas even forested ones!, plenty of deep of opportunities to explore the water a plus, as well as the Washington DC water Utility hq, gorgeous views of the bridges, reagan national airport, Roosevelt island and of course the stadium itself Rising above it all. When I was a kid, this area was neglected . It's so wonderful to see it come to life and represent the city. It reminds me of the warehouse District in New York city.
It felt almost magical as one minute I was sitting in such a peaceful quiet beautiful environment come out and within 5 minutes of walking, I wasn't a lively district next to the, Also legendary and it's epicnesss-- national's ball park.
The people watching was the best part. There were so many happy families. Everybody just seems to be in the same state of peace and serenity. There were at least 15 different nationalities that I could spot, which is the best part about living in DC! There were so many happy children playing. I never stopped smiling. I hope to move close to this...
Read moreTucked in a corner of the revitalizing Southeast waterfront, this informal little park is the place to be on spring, summer and fall weekends.
Dropping by you might find live bands playing, kids and parents frolicking over a picnic, or people out strolling. Last year it was still pretty barren, but there are lots of new restaurants and shops nearby (grab a meal from one and sprawl with a book in the grass for a weekend lunch). It's a wonderful spot, right near the mouth of the river. It's tranquil, if not always picturesque (the water can be muddy and still all too often, with litter and other debris floating by).
Top secret, if you don't get too rowdy, you can bring a few cold ones to enjoy outside too, one of the few places in the city that allows public drinking (for events, there's usually a vendor selling two or three locals from set up kegs). And what's better than drinking outside? Not much really.
Yards Park is a fantastic local oasis, and the perfect spot for your next hangout or...
