Firstly, the atmosphere when you walk in the door is absolutely lovely. Such a wonderful ambiance with the choice of dim candle lighting, it’s quite romantic for a night out. The two wonderful people I first encountered were Chris and Nikina (I’m sorry if I spelled it wrong, very beautiful name). Chris was very efficient in procuring us a table; there was little to no wait at all, if anything I was just standing admiring the restaurant for how welcoming every aspect was.
We sat at a table with a very cute window seat view. Browsing the menu, we chose the wagyu & kimchi dumplings on the specials menu and the oysters. We also got delicious cocktails that included gin and bourbon; Very very well made and absolutely delicious. You could really taste the bartender’s passion. Next, the dumplings were so elevated! Incorporating the gochujang without overpowering the dish made it very balanced. The oysters—oh I have not had such decadent flavor inside of something fried! I’m usually not a fried food kind of person but oh wow. So so delicious. Further, I also do not like coleslaw, but THIS one was such a nice combination under the oysters! I swear I could probably be proved wrong about everything I don’t like if I ate it from here. That is such an excellent skill for a restaurant.
An absolute thank you to Chris who made sure that everything was up to par when we received our food and drinks.
After the small plates, we chose the duck and the steak from the dinner section. The duck was so moist and crispy inside, so very well seasoned and the lentils carried very good flavor. I ordered my steak medium rare and OH it was so so tender and delicious and just so successful in the execution of a beautifully cooked steak. If anything, most of the conversation held at the table was about how wonderful the food was and how we were pleasantly satisfied.
Lastly, after another round of drinks, we had the salted ice cream with the chocolate cake. The ice cream was SO. DELICIOUS. I literally would’ve wanted to buy a pint of it to take home. The chocolate was very rich as well.
Honestly, this such was an elegant and absolutely refined dining experience. I’m so glad I live in proximity to here— it definitely will provoke me to visiting often. Thank you again to the absolutely amazing Chris and Nikina, you’re an absolute definition of what it means to influence ethereal memories in a dining experience. Not only that, you both hold very positive and friendly attitudes :)
We will definitely be returning and thank you so very much!! Will be...
Read moreI had a very bizarre experience at Chloe and cannot in good faith recommend it to anyone with any sort of dietary restriction, particularly an allergy. I went with three friends for dinner: I have celiacs and another in the group has a dairy ALLERGY. Upon arrival, we alerted our waiter to both immediately. To start, I ordered a rye cocktail from their specialty list and asked if the bartender could recommend a different, gluten free liquor to sub the rye. Instead, the waiter told me that rye is certified GF by the Celiac Foundation. (I'm aware of the ongoing debate over the distillation process and gluten, but whiskeys have always irritated my stomach so I avoid them). I requested a potato vodka instead, and after a brief back and forth with the waiter trying to convince me rye would be fine, he finally complied. Next, my friend with a dairy allergy asked if they cook with butter or oil, and the waiter told her "don't worry we don't use butter." Later, after we'd started eating, he told her they cook with clarified butter - which, for a dairy allergy, is not necessarily kosher depending on your sensitivity. She ended up going home with a stomachache. The last bizarre interaction came when the others at the table ordered grilled bread (which was not complimentary). When the waiter delivered it, he told me that their bread was so good that if he were me, he would just suck it up and eat it anyways. Typically, in my experience, restaurants these days are hypervigilant about food allergies; some have even refused to serve me food (like french fries) that have been cross contaminated in their kitchen, which made this experience all the more bizarre.
Beyond all of this, I give the restaurant 2 stars because the food was in fact good. However, after splitting the bill evenly at $80 a head (including a cocktail and glass of wine each) no one left feeling particularly full - the dishes are all tapas/shared plates style, with a few larger protein dishes and then smaller to medium size sides. So allergy or not, I would not recommend...
Read moreThis is the perfect neighborhood restaurant. Chloe's offers small plates (and bigger ones) which allows you to create whatever meal you want. Sometimes I go and drop $50, sometimes I spend $200. Most of the time we end up somewhere in between. The service is top-notch, the staff is incredibly friendly, and they have exceptional consistency. (I've been going regularly for over a year and don't recall having a bad plate.) It's always a great experience here and I never feel rushed.
I like that there is no deliniation between appetizer/entree/side. I can order whichever plates I want and make it a meal. If I have a few guests, we order five plates or so and there's something for everyone.
TL;DR: Five stars for everything, ten stars for the staff, literally the best blueberry muffin I've had in my life.
Brunch: I would go to war for the blueberry muffin. The salad is incredible. Chorizo and potato hash is the perfect brunch entree. Crispy lemongrass chicken is also very good. The ricotta is available at both brunch and dinner; you can't go wrong with bread, cheese, and fruit.
Dinner: The chicken is amazing; my dad and I usually split it. Don't even get me started on the potato gnocchi, which is the perfect combination of potato, pasta, and cheese. If I could have it every day of my life, I would without regret. The penne pasta is a classic; great if you're in the mood for pasta and not trying to be very adventurous. The pan-roasted sweet corn is excellent.
A note for my "dry" peeps--I've never experienced lower service here because we don't order alcohol. That seemingly inevitable moment when the waitstaff reverts to the bare minimum because we're not ordering drinks has been recurring in my experience across DC restaurants, but never here.
Again, I have to highlight the incredible food and service I experience. I recall times I went to brunch on a Sunday morning and wound up back at the restaurant for dinner. I love this restaurant; if you're in Navy Yard this is the...
