stayed here for a few weeks with family during our Asia visit last summer. surveyed several rooms during our truncated stay (checked out then back in a few days later), and to suit different needs.
Location & Convenience: right in the heart of downtown, this location can't be beat. eateries of all categories and price range ON THE SAME BLOCK! convenience stores, mini supermarket, pharmacies, household goods stores, fashion shops, hair salons... all nearby. several trendy malls around a 5-min walk. 5-7 min to Star Walk (星光大道) -- bonus find: Middle Road Playground right by it!!! 15-20 min to Star Ferry / Ocean Terminal area. use MTR passage if you don't like to be exposed to the elements. MTR station within 2 min to TST N2 exit (another 5-7 min to platform) if you prefer to get to the train via their underground, covered passage with moving walkway. if one is feeling adventurous, there's a bus terminal (~5 min walk) by Chatham Rd S. with buses that can take you to Sha Tin, Tsuen Wan, Stanley, etc. no taxi stand on site, don't need one - usually one can find a vacant cab passing through the street, even at 3am.
Room & Ambiance: room size is appropriate -- maybe i should even say abundant -- esp if one understands how real estate works in Hong Kong. 3.5 open check-in size suitcases lying around, there is still room to walk, no need to jump from place to place. That, in Hong Kong, spells SPACIOUS! room comfort is adequate. in the heat of summer, we never felt stuffed, sometimes even too cold i had to turn up the thermostat. bed and pillows were comfy! they have two firmnesses on the pillows, too. noise level -- low. aside from occasional car honks from the streets (can't avoid those), and an occasional inconsiderate group on your floor (can't avoid those, either), the stay feels calm and quiet. everything in the room was working. one bathroom even had electronic bidet feature!
Amenities: room is equipped with enough: tea kettle, coffee maker, closet, slippers, toiletries, hair dryer, room safe, work desk. some has a sitting area: extra cushy chair and small table. free wifi. 'nuf said. complimentary bottled water: 2 per room every day when your room gets cleaned. (do NOT drink tap!) upgraded room is equipped with USB charger on outlets. also got Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries! executive lounge (Noble Quad) on top floor (exclusive access): lots of natural lighting, comfortable seating. great place to chill alone or with a couple friends, business partners, etc. local phone and data service available for rental. two restaurants right on premise. one is the Michelin-starred Come Into (silly name, yes) Restaurant, featuring Chiu Chow cuisine. typical of downtown mid-range hotel: no gym, no pool, no business center. they're not necessary.
Staff & Service: predominantly younger (20s & 30s) staff dressed in semi-casual uniforms (ex. tee under tweed jacket, paired with white sneakers) imparts a fresh, contemporary look. airport/hotel car service drivers are punctual, polite, and safe -- we drove through Red Rain Warning with a toddler on my lap and i didn't cringe one time -- this says a lot once one has experience with the red taxi and mini van in Hong Kong. these guys also stand by in lobby, greet guests, provide assistance. very friendly and hard working! front desk: good command of English; i would presume they are proficient in Cantonese and Mandarin as well. courteous, dutiful, efficient. housekeeping: very polite and considerate, minimum "intrusion" when cleaning with you in room. efficient with cleaning and requests. laundry service also good. breakfast: it's nice that it is there, but really a low point of the stay (which is not entirely the hotel's fault coz they're outsourced).
Full disclosure: got connection for a favorable rate and upgraded room. nevertheless, review is not altered due to these reasons, just my honest take.
In short, considering all elements, i would stay here again and would recommend to...
Read moreIf you don't plan on spending any time in your room and you are extremely low maintenance then you may want to consider this hotel. For everyone else, you should look elsewhere.
Originally, I was going to label this hotel with one word -- DUMP. However, there are positive elements of this establishment that raised the rating to two stars.
Pros: -- Location is central to shopping malls and street markets as well as many food establishments that are within walking distance. Very lively atmosphere throughout the day and in the evening for those who enjoy the activity. -- We found the service to be very good. When we saw the maid while leaving our room, she asked what we would like for her to accomplish when she cleaned the room, then she did exactly as we asked later that day. When calling for towels or extra shampoo, someone showed up at our door within minutes with our request. The doorman and the reception staff were very friendly and helpful. -- Water pressure in the shower was strong and there were no issues with getting hot water for a long shower. -- WiFi is free and the network is open so you don't need a password to use it. It was also better than adequate for online searches and busy web pages. I used it for a little on-line gaming before sleep and it was adequate for the cause. -- The hotel provides one power adapter.
Cons: -- The room smelled. It would seem that the carpets had some sort of moldy smell to them, but it could have also been the curtain. The smell made you think twice about walking on the carpet with your bare feet. -- The bathroom has no power outlets to use for your hair dryer, curling iron, shaver, cordless toothbrush, etc... If you want to use these items, you need to go to the foot of the bed, next to the TV, and plug in to the desk/vanity which is inconvenient. -- Speaking of power, the only place that you will find power outlets is at the vanity. If you use a CPAP machine, use your computer or phone while charging, etc.., you have to run the cables across the room and they may not reach, depending on what your requirements are. I used power strips which added 3 feet and then plugged into those. Seriously, no power next to the bed?!?! -- The shower curtain was moldy and smelled up the bathroom shower. This could have been easily rectified by complaining, but the hotel's quality control should have taken care of this before we checked in. -- This is both a pro and a con, but I've listed it in the con section because of the lack of logic involved with the setup. Half the lights can be turned off or on from the comfort of the bed (at the night stand). The other half are on the other side of the bed (at the night stand). The con is that you have to go from one night stand to the other to turn off all of the lights. The pro is that you can turn the lights on and off from your bed.
Summary: Overall, I would not recommend this hotel. There are plenty of other hotels in the general area to try and this one would not be on my list as a place I'd like to come back to.
While it's true that every hotel has negative traits, the oddity of having all power outlets located in one spot, along with the smell of the room and the bathroom, are too much to overcome and prevent my...
