I stayed at Astoria hotel for a short business trip. I'm working for a Danish company, so being in Copenhagen is not something new to me, but I never had the chance to sleep in this hotel before.
The hotel location is the only great thing, which I could mention. I actually have the feeling this hotel was mentioned by J.R.R.Tolkien's novels when the great author was describing the War in Númenor. The hotel looks like being built during these ages of druids and magic, and never renovated since.
You can find both signs of the orcs armies staying at the hotel, where their dirty legs left an unbelievable strong smell in the bathrooms. As any hotel manager knows, such smell cannot be cleansed by any chance, neither by magic nor by 21 century's cleaning materials. So we cannot blame them for leaving the rooms with such smell, it's just not their fault.
Additionally, you can find tracks from the battle axes of the great dwarfs from the Middle Earth. Dwarfs stayed in this very same hotel when they returned from the battle for Númenor. They were celebrating the great victory over the orcs, so they had lots and lots of wines and other drinks they could find in the endless cellars of this legendary city. It's normal and acceptable the stains, which you still can find plenty, to be impossible to clean, even about 10,000 years after the celebrations. You can see the stains clearly on the rooms' carpets. I'm sure hotel management tried for decades, if not centuries, to clean these stains, but there's no human force, which could help repairing or cleaning the results of such great events.
If these legendary historical facts cannot attract customer's attention, there's yet another astonishing feature, which the hotel offers to its guests. I don't know if you're aware, but the Were-Worms of the Middle Earth, the same which helped Orcs during the Battle of the Five Armies, these same worms dug the canals, where currently all Copenhagen trains pass through in order to reach København H, the central station of this ancient and beautiful city. Were-worms, absolutely intentionally, dug the canals so close to this ancient hotel, so now the trains, when they pass, create magnificent vibrations, which you can feel with all your body parts, even if you're sleeping at the silent part of the hotel, the one, which does not face these canals.
But wait: if you're lucky, you'll get the room directly facing these canals! In this case, you'll be able to witness many great technological achievements of our civilization, which pass by the hotel every five to ten minutes, not only massaging all your body with their strong vibration but also training your ears' sound neural system in recognizing the different kinds of locomotives and wagons.
I highly recommend the hotel for any person, who would like to train their hearing aids and would like to witness the Middle Earth wars' artifacts. If you love wine, this is the hotel for you: there's wine hour, which you can participate, where most probably you'll relive the ancient victories of orcs and dwarfs.
However, if you enjoy decent hotel rooms and quiet environment, you should probably seek a different accommodation in Copenhagen!
P.S. Bear in mind, I wrote this while sleeping in one of the more quieter rooms. My colleagues did not have that luck. But it's proven that human body can survive without severe health consequences for five nights of sleep deprivation, so we all hope for their best! I still decided to give them 2*, because of the slow, but reliable...
Read moreA quaint, cost efficient hotel with friendly staff.
A historical building that kept it's charm and memory while still being very accomodating and moderate with an unbeatable location.
It has, if I remember it correctly, one of the first revolving doors of Copenhagen (I'm not sure if it was even first in Denmark considering it's Denmark's capitol). And they are just looking so vintage, beautiful and special entrance. I just had to mention, well, on with the review...
They have space for storing luggage before/after check-in and was kind enough to do it for me and my wife, and seeing it is next to the station it is really a luxury service.
You can just leave your bags securely after check-out for example and then go for a coffee before the train, and simply fetch your bags just before at no extra charge. Lovely!
We had booked a economy room cause we would be out alot anyways but seeing how nice it was if we go again I would like to try a level up to "Standard" or "Deluxe" type rooms considering the nice setting inside.
The room was clean and fresh and it was a hot day, but we found a fan in the room and the windows could be kept open with a secure lock thing (or fully opened without the security lock) and the view is looking out over the nice and lively center of Copenhagen.
It even had a balcony outside the window and some rooms with balcony doors had chairs and tables and some plants set up for those rooms.
The bed was queen size and felt nice although being used to king size of coming again I would choose a room with king size bed if not wanting to go more cost efficient cause don't get me wrong the room was more than well enough still. Everything worked fine, as was the toiler/shower, and it seemed more cramped in the pictures than it actually was when finally arriving there.
There is regular keys and locks for the hotel rooms so don't expect digital roomcards and such, but it just adds to the charm of the place. The rooms still get 4/5 according to me, and the only thing that would make it a 5/5 is maybe luxury additions like soundproofing, hairdryer, more toiletries, safe and AC in the room.
To mention some more good stuff
You get free coffe to go in the morning, just to fetch by the reception/bar.
In the afternoon they have a "Wine Hour" thing where they offer a glass of wine on the house starting 17:00 everyday.
The staff is very nice and helpful and you never feel hesitant to ask for their help/advice and you get well met every time.
The location is right next to the train station in the center of Copenhagen. Good starting point for whatever you wanna do, and there is most for all different sized budgets to find to do/eat/enjoy although always remember Copenhagen is a bit on the pricy side in general.
We chose this cause it was one of the more decently priced central hotels we found.
We didn't try the breakfast which I almost wish I had, cause we had a drink while awaiting check-in at their bar and later sat outside in the restaurant section's outdoor serving for a smoke and it looked very neat all around and I wasn't expecting it being so nicely mixed new with old. (They have a very nice selection of whiskey by the way)
All in all a pleasant stay and we would come back next time visiting Copenhagen so it's recommended to not waste to much of your travelbudget on the staying part while still getting a...

I lived at the Hotel Astoria Copenhagen for two days on September 6 and 7, 2023. When I entered my room at the hotel on checking-in, I found no air-conditioning at 22-23—degrees C. After looking around, I could not find any signs of air-conditioning, and all I discovered was a crude fan from the age of King Christian IV of Denmark sitting near the table in my room. I went downstairs and spoke to a receptionist lady to inquire about air-conditioning; she said, “We don’t have it.” I was flabbergasted and shocked to find no air. I asked why you didn’t mention it on your website, and she said we don’t do it, and “ we don’t say that we have air-conditioning. I asked if you noted it in my confirmatory email or the contract I signed when I paid, but she had no reasonable explanation. I requested to see the manager, and the receptionist said he would be available tomorrow morning.
When I went to the front desk the following morning to speak with the manager, a young man who didn’t look like a manager said he was the manager. The manager repeated the same nonsense, saying we don’t say that we have air-conditioning, but had no rationale and logical reply as to why the hotel does not mention anywhere on the website or other communications with the customer about not having air-conditioning.
Why is it dishonest? Because it is like selling a product by a salesperson without telling its pros and cons. It is like research on a scientific or art project without mentioning all its positives and negatives, like a doctor prescribing medicine without saying its benefits and drawbacks to the patient.
In addition, my room was small; the bathroom was tiny in size, there was a tiny basin/sink, and there was an ultrashort distance between the basin and the door entrance. All the water accommodated inside the sink for washing the face, and the bathroom floor became a swimming pool after bathing because of clogging.
Hotel Astoria should understand that temperature and climate control in any human dwelling is the most comforting environmental aspect for a man. Air-conditioning is an essential element of living, like water supply and electricity; It is not a luxury in 2023. And the hotel should put clearly on their website that it does not have...
