Disappointing Service, but the Bingsoo Shines
Rating: 2 out of 5 stars
We visited SSAM Korean Food Bar on a recent evening and were immediately met with a less-than-welcoming experience. Despite the restaurant not being fully booked, as the waiter claimed, we were made to wait outside for 20 minutes before being seated in a corner at the bar. Throughout our meal, we observed numerous empty tables both upstairs and downstairs, raising questions about the initial wait.
The food itself was a mixed bag. The highlight was undoubtedly the Mango Cheese Bingsoo, a massive and incredibly delicious dessert. However, the service was incredibly slow, with one waiter seemingly overworked while others appeared unengaged. Our Spicy Korean Fried Chicken took an hour and 30 minutes to arrive, despite other guests who arrived after us already finishing their meals. This excessive wait time was frustrating and almost prompted us to leave.
While the Spicy KFC was ultimately enjoyable, the overall experience was marred by the poor service and a very long wait times. The prices seemed high considering the quality of service and the initial wait.
Recommendations:
Consider booking a table in advance to avoid the potential wait. If you're in a hurry, choose a dish other than the Spicy KFC. Be prepared for slow service and potential delays. The Mango Cheese Bingsoo is a must-try!
Overall:
SSAM Korean Food Bar offers some tasty dishes, particularly the Bingsoo. However, the poor service and long wait times significantly detract from the...
Read moreI have mixed feelings about this place. All in all, I like it and will continue to come back. But there's some downsides. The staff seems confused all the time. I don't know why that is, but they seem like they're always running in circles? Friendly for sure, but you're at the same time left "feeling alone" because of the reason mentioned before. The food is good. Not amazing, but good. It seems to have gotten a bit more bland than a few years ago when I was a more regular go'er of this place. I don't know what it is, the food just need some more "kapow"? The taste that's there is good but it's very very subtle. There's a subtle, yet good, kick of spice though. And the food still taste fresh which is a plus. The portion sizes are on the small size, and it seems to have gotten smaller for some reason? It might just be me feeling this. One main dish is enough if you're a small person or not very hungry, but for an average sized hungry person, you can easily devour two main portions or one main with a few sides - and then it suddenly becomes an expensive meal.
Lastly a small suggestion: maybe add a "please wait to be seated" sign at the entrance. I knew to wait because I've been there before, but in the time we were there, we experienced multiple groups of people that just went in and sat at a table and had to be asked to leave because all tables...
Read moreI had a high expectation for this restaurant, and it turned out to be a completely disaster. Food, service and everything. What a shame! We came in without reservation and this unfriendly girl worker didnt really welcome us and just told us that they are fully booked. We felt really unwelcomed but we were so hungry that we told her we can eat quick and go. In the end she sat us at the bar in the corner. However during the whole time we sat and ate, the tables upstairs and downstairs didnt become even half full. Also since we were sitting at the bar where we could see whats happening in the kitchen, these 4 workers (none of them were korean) were chatting around the food making and the people who made the food didnt seem like really professional cooks. After we got served food, it was more disappointing. Cold small portion of bibimbab with extremly strange sauce( was it sriracha?) served to us. My boyfriend ordered vegan bibimbap, and we didnt think it deserved that price. And taste was terrible. I wonder why they didnt use gochujang sauce to it. I also had the chicken pieces on the side, those weren't that bad. but yea, still not authentic either. They also charge tap water. There was no service to us. I really wonder why this place has relatively higher ratings. If you want to experience Korean food and experience, please...
