My partner and I were staying at a nearby hotel for a long weekend as we were visiting Copenhagen from the UK. We had passed your restaurant on the Friday and were impressed with the menu - especially the crispy pork national dish - so we booked for Sunday in order to try some. Our table was booked for 8.15pm due to another event we were attending not finishing until 7.30pm. We arrived promptly and were shown to our table by a lovely waitress with blond hair (I don't know her name). She gave us the menu and asked if we would like to order some drinks - which we did. When she brought the drinks over, she informed us that the only thing that they didn't have was the crispy pork. As you can imagine, I was very disappointed as that was the reason we had booked this restaurant. She did go and double check, but confirmed there was no pork available. She then gave us a bit more time to pick something else. Another waitress with dark hair came over to see if we were ready to order our food. I asked if I could have the Patty Shells as a main course as I couldn't have the pork and my partner ordered the Wiener Schnitzel - at this point I mentioned that I was disappointed that they had sold out of the pork and was told I should have pre-ordered it. As I was unaware that you had to pre-order, I suggested that maybe this should be pointed out on the booking form/website when making a reservation online. All I got was a shrug of the shoulders and a 'maybe'. My partner commented that she was a little rude and I must admit, I did agree with him. Our food arrived and we were chatting about how nice it was. I did say that due to them not having the pork, I would mention it when I wrote my review, but as the food that we did order was so delicious, my score was going up by the minute. At this point, the dark-haired waitress walked over to us and verbally attacked us, stating that there was nothing she could do about them running out of pork and everyone else in the restaurant that had wanted it had had some and I should have pre-ordered it. Again I pointed out that I had no idea I had to pre-order (I’d left my crystal ball at home on this trip) and she could do something by feeding back my comments to the manager – to which she replied that ‘he wouldn’t care’! I asked if he was available, but got told he wasn’t there. I can’t for one moment imagine that the manager of a restaurant with such a good reputation wouldn’t care – but you never know. I was also told that everyone knows you have to book the pork and maybe I should have booked my table for 6pm rather than 8.15 in order for them not to have sold out. Her rant now over, she returned back behind the bar where she proceeded to keep staring at us for the rest of our meal. Never have I felt so awkward in a restaurant and I wouldn’t like anyone else to go through this, – which is why I’m urging any other visitor to Copenhagen and Frk. Barners Kaelder who would like to try the Crispy Pork on a Sunday or Tuesday, to pre-book it! And to top it all, she then informed us that our credit card company had charged us DKK 4.74 surcharge…my bank DOES NOT have ANY overseas charges on the Clarity credit card – so she has also lied and robbed us. I would really appreciate a response from the manager. To confirm - the food was delicious, the blonde waitress was lovely, the restaurant was clean, the prices were reasonable...it's just the awful waitress with the dark hair that lets it...
Read moreMade a reservation here on a Saturday night after being recommended to visit here by a work supplier. By the way, this place gets really busy so I think reservations are essential.
Initially we were a little unsure what we had done as the there were a large table of young men next to use who were in the process of being thrown out of the restaurant as they were disrespecting the staff and other customers.
Once that had all calmed down though, we were really happy with this little restaurant.
I ordered the Barners Kaelder Favourite set dishes which was a chicken and asparagus starter, wiener schnitzel and a stewed apple and jam desert. My wife ordered the stew which came with pork fillet, bacon, sausage and vegetables.
First thing to note... the portions here are HUGE! Like seriously, HUGE! You might want to think about sharing a main course.
The food was all tasty and very hearty, nothing fancy or dainty but just good, honest food.
There's a good selection of beer and wine and we also had 2 Greenland Coffees which were delicious (not to mention theatrical!)
A special mention to the staff too, all of which were absolutely lovely and so attentive. They were obviously under stress with the idiots on the next table to us but they acted with humour and grace throughout.
If you're looking for some traditional Danish cooking in a unpretentious environment, make a...
Read moreThey seem really popular, that even at 2pm, the restaurant was super busy and packed. It took them a while and 3 persons later, one of the servers finally attended to me and gave me a table. Then it took another asking of 3 servers before they had time to take my order. I didn't even have the time to ask for recommendations. I ordered 2 dishes but by the time I finished the first, I was feeling quite full already. Thankfully they haven't started preparing the Roasted Pork Loin so I got to cancel it.
I later realized what I had was the Danish Smørrebrød. A faceless sandwich with a variety of toppings. The bread is usually rye bread and what goes on it depends on what the restaurant has but it's normally some type of seafood and comes with a side of potatoes. Mine was eggs and bacon. The bacon was nicely fried to a crisp that breaks cleanly as the fork pokes into it.
What I thought would be appetizer turned out to be quite a main, perhaps due to the potatoes that came with it, which I polished off cleanly.
There's some history to this restaurant too, it's apparently named after an old lady who created the place to give women-at-risk a home so they don't go into vices. Everything inside gives old school vibes but I love it, including the early Christmas decor.
Pity I didn't get to try the Pork Loin which seemed to be...
