First and foremost, the staff was very friendly and kind. Besides that, the rooftop terrace offered a nice view and the included breakfast was also very pleasant. The hotel conveniently is located right above a local market, which gave you the opportunity to get in touch with very outgoing, outspoken and very confident locals. Small talk about our origin Germany, its cars and pleasantries were exchanged. I was called „Rambo“ once which really boosted my selfesteem. Some shops had a „no hassle“ sing above its entry, but really I enjoyed being hassled.
Back to the hotel itself. Upon entering the room your nostrils are being comforted by a very distinct fragrance. We could not quite tell wether it's source was the mouldy AC or the drain in the “bathroom” (see below). Either way we are thankful for this encouragement to explore the beautiful city of Luxor and its sights. We credit it with fulfilling our goals to see basically all sights within about 40 hours.
We were very grateful to be able to have a private bathroom. Being able to lock the door from it's outside sparked some rather deeply laying thoughts, but I love my wife. I do. It's setup with about 15 cm between the toilet and the wall it's facing encouraged to not doomscroll and waste time while getting rid of the bodily waste. Even more time to explore the city! Also having a 25x40 cm shower appeared encouraging to save some water and do our part to stop the climate change. But then there it was. Because of the rather space-saving setup, the showercurtain hugged me tightly from behind. And from both sides. Maybe even from above. It felt like a motherly embrace, like a warm hug, how I imagined what it would feel like being wrapped in tasty burrito (no I don't smoke weed) - showing the love I never got from my dad. I seemed to be tightly loved by everyone who showered here before me. It truly was a holistic experience.
Last but very much not least, the highlight of our stay - late night entertainment! After spending a day discovering 5000 years of history not even the smelling salts like stench could keep us awake any longer than 8pm. But no way we could miss the late night entertainment kindly organized for our pleasure! At exactly 0:02 am it started - rather late for our taste but hey I grew up in Berlin. Clubs barely get going before 1 am anyways. The beat seemed somewhere between Berghain and my Bosch GBM 16-2 RE with a 50 cm masonary drill. To be fair to Berghain it sounded exactly like my Bosch GBM 16-2 RE with a 50 cm masonary drill attached to it going through granite. I was a tad bit disappointed because the show only lasted for about 40 minutes. I mean I paid about 38 Euros for the night - I expected some more commitment from the local musicians/construction workers.
(Un)fortunately we only stayed in Luxor for a night so we didn't get to compare this phenomenal stay to a competitor, but whenever we come back we will make sure to get some comparison :-)
To be fair and without any further jokes, besides the smell, the mouldy AC and the constructionnoise during the night, it was really what we expected in this price segment, the staff and the hotels location were perfect for our needs. Because we only stayed one night we didn't bother asking for another room - maybe the other ones were...
Read moreUpon our arrival, the receptionists informed us that their system had gone wrong and that they could not provide us a room at their hotel. Despite we had our bookings made months ago and had high hopes on enjoying their rooftop, we were at first fine with their immediate arrangements of getting us a new hotel room nearby (a two-minute walk from Nefertiti). They also emphasised that the new hotel was a “more expensive” one but it was all on them as a compensation. The receptionist walked us to the new hotel “Emilio” which appeared to be shabby and gloomy. Check-in was smooth and the receptionist from Nefertiti was helpful. Yet, staff at Emilio looked uninterested in their guests, no greetings, just stares. Our room was old AND DIRTY. The only amenities were three pieces soaps (for 2 guests), nothing else. When we tried to ask for a hairdryer, one hotel staff could not speak English and after some waiting, another staff told us all hairdryers were lent to guests who had slept… we thought we were staying in a terrible motel.True that Nefertiti had nothing much to do with the poor service and environment in Emilio and they have tried to fit us into a shelter anyway. BUT! What frustrated us was that the so-called “more expensive” hotel room was of such low quality. Out of curiosity, we tried to search on Emilio. It had only a 3/5 rating!!! (Nefertiti currently has 4.3/5, which was why we chose it) I believe any traveller would know the difference between a 3 and 4.3 rating hotel! And I also believe before putting us into Emilio, Nefertiti would not have no clue about what hotel they were ditching their guests in… Not to mention their rooms were always weirdly sold out in all seasons, which I was sure their were plenty of empty rooms available at that moment as all unused guest rooms had their doors open (as if they were not intended to let guests make a booking), so there was no way we could check on the price. To be honest, we sort of felt cheated. As a consumer who had already paid, I did not care if the compensation room was “more expensive”. What mattered was to stay at an accommodation we opted for our journey or in any case, to have a replacement with similar quality (unless Nefertiti agrees they are as awful as Emilio). The next morning when we returned to Nefertiti for complementary breakfast, no one followed up on our case. I suppose if we got to stay with Nefertiti, it would be a better night but now - a true disappointment to both the hotels.Too frustrated that we only took pictures of the...
Read moreI had a very bad experience with Nefertiti’s hotel organisation. I have been speaking with Basel since early May for our trip to Egypt at the beginning of June. He tried to be helpful but unsuccessfully.
We have booked two nights at Nefertiti hotel through booking and he proposed to organise a few more things to make our trip easier. But it wasn’t.
We have asked Basel to help us with the transfer from Hurghada to Luxor. We paid 125$ for the private car to bring us to Luxor.
We have also booked two tours so the transfer back to the airport was for free, as Bassel indicated.
I have specifically said that the transfer back to the airport was in Hurghada and that our flight back to El Cairo was at 6am. But he thought it was in Luxor, and that is maybe why he thought this ride would be for free.
When we arrived to Nefertitis hotel and spoke with the receptionist to finish all the arrangements for our next days, we realised that they could not take us to Hurghada for our flight and that we needed to either come back to Hurghada sooner or change our flight.
We spoke with EgyptAir to change our flight and it was very expensive so it was better to buy a new flight to El Cairo from Luxor. So we paid 70$ each for our new flights.
Despite all the inconveniences, they just reduced 24$ as we could not spend two nights in Luxor but one.
If we would have known this we would have organised our trip differently and saved the money…
After adapting everything because of their mistake, when arriving to the airport in El Cairo, and arriving from Luxor instead of Hurgada, Egypt Air explained that we needed to come from Hurghada and not Luxor to take our flight back to Madrid, because of the flight connection. Hence, we needed to pay almost 300€…
I understand that the fees that we had to pay for Egyp Air is not directly related to Nefertiti’s hotel, but the mistake that Basel made cost us 440€…
Apart from that, the room was super small, there was a lot of noise in the street at night. My partner is 195m tall and he could not enter in the bathroom without hitting his head on the door… Food is good but you do not need to stay at the hotel to eat at the restaurant. Guide was good as well.
But it was definitely a disaster for us and my feeling is that they just do not care if your trip is well organised, just want you to book a lot of things with them. I think you can find cheaper tours with other companies.
It just made my experience in Egypt a very bad one and definitely will not come...
