Stayed in the hotel for 3 nights at the Deluxe room and had a very pleasant stay. Hotel was clean and well maintained. Bed was very comfortable. My husband who is a super light sleeper was able to have great long sleep during the 3 nights (thank you). The hotel provides you with a smart phone that you can carry outside the hotel which is very handy for making local calls. The phone provides recommendations on restaurants, shopping, etc. I was able to conveniently make restaurant reservation with the smart phone. In fact, I identified a very nice restaurant nearby with that phone on my first night in paris and had a great great great dinner!
The hotel location was perfect, less than 10 mins walk away from the Galleries Lafayette which I went multiple times to shop!! Hotel was surrounded with a great choice of restaurants too.
The only not-so-pleasant experience was during the check out where the staff was quite rude. Since I had prepaid online in full through the Chess Hotel website before I went to Paris, the only balance I expected to settle was the tax. However during the checkout, the staff just told me the full hotel charge without explanation. When I tried to explain that I made the payment in advance, she wouldn’t let me finish my sentence and just cut me off. She rushed off to say that nothing was deducted when I checked in which I totally understood and wasn’t my comment. I tried to explain again in a very polite way that payment was made in advance and tried to show her the transaction record and history on my phone but she just won’t look and cut me off again.. at the end I was only required to pay the tax balance. However it did affect my mood a bit for my last day in Paris. It would have been a lot better if she is just willing to listen and communicate.
Other than that, everyone else was very helpful and friendly. Would still recommend this...
Read moreBooked this place for a personal/ work trip with high hopes given all the 5 star reviews. It was disappointing to say the least.
For starters, we were 2 people checking in and the hotel room only had 1 glass. The sockets on the table were embedded in the table but did not allow for the plugs to work so it was only for aesthetic purposes. It was strange that they did not have a kettle and coffee/ tea available, I have stayed at cheaper hotels and they all did. when we requested for a kettle, the staff came with just that and we asked about the cups and she replied you didn't ask for it?
We explicitly mentioned that there are 2 bookings under my name and will not be checking out until the 4th night but the cards stopped working after a day. The same staff who checked us in did not even remember us the next door when we were getting the hotel cards validated again.
We settled check out the night before so we could just drop our keys the next morning and leave. This time they only charged us tourist tax for the first night and the next door questioned why we only paid for the first night? It is their job to ensure we are charged the right amount, not mine to tell them how much I should be paying?
All in all, this was a very poor experience given the price of the hotel and the service standards. There are way better hotels around for the same...
Read moreUnfortunately, the hotel The Chess could not convince. The four stars of the hotel are not justified. This hotel resembles if at all a two star Ibis hotel, which is much cheaper. The rooms in the hotel are very small, nothing special but at least clean. The breakfast room is the reception and the reception is the breakfast room. This breakfast hall/reception is very small, not necessarily clean and rather unkempt/disgusting. In the pictures of the hotel, everything looked very neat and cute, however, this does not correspond to reality at all. All the chairs are dirty and stained. Breakfast was ok at most but not good at all. There was a small selection in the morning, but everything tasted like ready-made food. Also the coffee in the morning was undrinkable, which is why we always went to Starbucks around the corner. I would not recommend the food and breakfast under any circumstances. There are very many cute cafes around the corner which are delicious and comparatively cheap. The only way to enter the hotel and the rooms is an elevator, which is used by all hotel guests, as there is only this one and it also works extremely slowly. So you should definitely bring time with you. The stairs of the hotel are usable from top to bottom but not the other way around as the doors are locked. The only positive thing about this hotel is the location. It is located in a parallel street to the Opera Garnier. However, it must be emphasized here that there are nicer hotels with the same location at a better or comparable price in Paris. If you book the hotels a bit in advance, a Hilton at the Opera is as expensive as The Chess Hotel. In summary, the hotel is disappointing and we would not book it again under any circumstances.
Also sollte man unbedingt Zeit mitbringen.
