Our experience at Xiknal was pleasant but we found little value in the 140 usd/night that we paid. This place is by far not a boutique hotel, more like a cute B&B without the breakfast.
Location is great, at the center of San Miguel, and 10 min walking from the ferry. And the rooms are actually more beautiful than in the pictures. But there are so many things that could be better... Firstly, the room felt incomplete and very basic. We only had one bedside lamp and no other light that could make the room cozy. We missed having a large mirror. Half of the curtains were see-through so in the morning a lot of light came in. No coffee machine in the room as mentioned in Booking.com. In the bathroom there is barely any towel hanger or brush for the WC. No hair conditioner or body lotion provided - only two very cheap looking unmarked plastic bottles with soap? Unsure what was what (hand soap-shower gel?). The shower has little pressure. No hair towels or pool towels provided, had to ask for them. Now like it has been mentioned in other reviews, this is a family style accommodation. Literally the family lives there and is always around, eating and hanging out in the courtyard - for us felt strange and made us feel like we were invading their home. Also because to be honest we did not receive a super warm welcome or were showed much around when arrived, just a polite check in. The courtyard is beautiful but smaller than it looks in pictures. There are only three sunbeds - impossible for more than one room to be down there chilling. When we arrived and for the duration of our stay seems like they were doing some upgrading to the open kitchen area in the courtyard and it was not so pretty to look at.
Finally for the light sleepers like me: note that the location makes it that sometimes the music from nearby properties will be heard, even the cars from the street without even having a street facing room. The air con hums, could hear it with earplugs and there is no glass (but moskito net) in the bathroom window. Some rooms have an adjacent door to a common kitchen upstairs, through which everything can be heard. So sleep can get uncomfortable... (My partner slept good all nights but I am very sound sensitive and struggled most of the nights)
All in all the place is fine, but not worth what we paid. Hence why I make this review so future guests know what to expect. Big plus for animal lovers: They have a cat and dog which...
Read moreMy mum and me had the most wonderful, warm-hearted week at Xiknal. It made our trip really special. It´s a little paradise. The boutique hotel has just a few rooms and feels really intimate. It was so nice to have a kitchen with fridge and all necessary equipment to make breakfast, coffee and tea in the morning. There is also a table to eat. Our room was very spacious and very clean. It was the most comfortable bed in kingsize we had on our whole trip through México. The backyard is a very well-kept little botanical garden with Monsteras, palm trees, a blooming Hibiskus and other big plants. Sometimes you could see Kolibris. It´s beautifully decorated and there is also a little pool to cool down from the island heat. The hotel is in an old building fully renovated by the wonderful owners Rosalba and her husband Baltasar. You can see in every inch how much love, work and thought Rosalba and Baltasar put into the renovation and beautiful decoration of this house. You enter and it feels like a family house.
Rosalba and Baltasar are really amazing warm-hearted people. They are always around for questions, recommendations or just a chat about life. When we were there, Rosalba´s sister Marisa was visiting and was such a great enrichment. But my secret star of the house was the amazing puppy dog Paloma. Just the most adorable being you can imagine. Super cuddly and always really excited to see everyone.
In the basement of the hotel is a wonderful shop with fashion designed by Marisa and Rosalba. It´s one of the only local and stylish female fashion stores in whole Cozumel.
The location of Xiknal is also just perfect. It´s 1 minute walk from the water in a quiet street. A big super market is also in walking distance.
We can´t...
