During our first trip to Charleston, we had the opportunity to stay at a Bluegreen Vacations hotel, marking our first experience with this brand. We had no specific expectations, as our stay was part of a promotion that allowed us to experience this property.
Our room was categorized as a studio, featuring a king bed and a mini kitchen. The kitchen was equipped with a two-burner cooktop, microwave, dishwasher, toaster, coffee maker, and a full-sized refrigerator with an ice maker. It also came with a variety of dishes, cups, and a few food storage containers. However, the room lacked a dresser or any designated space for clothing storage. The only storage available was a small closet that contained a suitcase stand.
Now, let's focus on the positives of our stay. The hotel staff were upbeat, friendly, and eager to assist in addressing any issues we encountered. We were particularly impressed by their willingness to help resolve concerns with our room right away. This was especially surprising, given that this property is reportedly quite new within the Bluegreen portfolio. However, we chose not to have them address the issues we encountered (which we'll elaborate on shortly) due to our brief three-night stay.
Unfortunately, the positives end here, and we must transition to the numerous concerns and issues we encountered during our time at the property.
One of the major drawbacks was the cleanliness of our room. There were several issues that stood out, including ripped carpeting, numerous stains on both the walls in the main room and bathroom, mold on the shower grout, cracked molding at the door like someone tried to break in and a significant amount of dust, particularly on the floorboards. The water pressure was never consistent, and we often had issues with either cold water or getting hot water. The back of the TV remote was missing, and the lock on the door leading to the outside courtyard was broke, some of which were concerning.
While the courtyard itself was a pleasant space, the noise from other guests using the area was a problem. People would gather there and converse at a normal volume, which easily carried into our room well past 10:00 PM, disrupting our peace and quiet.
This leads us to one of the biggest issues we faced: noise. The property is surrounded by several bars and restaurants, and some of these establishments—especially the one located directly next door—transform into nightclubs after 10:00 PM. The music from these clubs would infiltrate our room, often continuing until 2:00 AM when they closed. I’m not exaggerating when I say that the bass from the music was so powerful that it literally shook our room on the 4th floor. On Sunday night, we did receive a brief respite around 11:59 PM, when the bars and nightclubs were required to stop serving alcohol due to South Carolina's laws, which prohibit alcohol sales after midnight.
We clearly would not stay at this location again, or in this area along King St. It's a great area to visit during the day and evening but not a place to sleep unless you want to go to bed after 2:00 AM.
Best to stay at another location, perhaps closer to the Battery, or a long East Bay St. We absolutely loved Charleston and can't...
Read moreFirst let me say in a pinch we’d stay here again. Only reason we’d pick the other location over this one is because of what we wanted to do during the vacation.
This area has scaffolding nearby. For the most part the area around is clean. We saw very few homeless people. There are food options and shops. They weren’t the options WE wanted. We did find a couple good places. Just down the street is Buzzed Bull Creamery- delicious ice cream you can add alcohol to. In the other direction is El Jefe Texcian- they serve good tacos that fill you up.
I’d suggest checking in during the day. It’s a lot easier to find the place. The sign isn’t one that grabs attention. They mentioned that a palm tree recently went up blocking their sign.
Next visit we’d choose valet parking over the parking garage. The parking garage is shared space. It’s also across the street. Crossing the street is a chore because there is no light or cross walk. We also had a time getting out of the garage. Because I’m handicap it’s free. The steps to making it free are different depending on who you talk to.
The lobby and floor we were on was clean and maintained. It was kinda bland to me compared to other Bluegreen resorts we’ve been to.
There is no pool, laundry, or fitness at this resort. The only amenity we found was a lounge area on the second floor. It had a few seats. There was also a fountain for ambiance and a fire pit. It was really nice outdoor space.
They’ll also let you know at check in there is no convenience food or drink options. You’ll need to walk three to five minutes down the street to get what you know. That store they direct you to is cramped, and a bit outdated. It’s also overpriced (you pay almost double for the convenience).
The room we stayed in was on the smaller side. We’re just two people so that was fine. Again, we found the decor and color scheme bland. The room was clean.
One of the biggest drawbacks to the room is being ground floor to the lounge area. There was no privacy unless you kept the curtains closed. I’d of much rather had them treat it like a bathroom window and it of had frosted glass.
The staff is friendly. They converse with you as you come and go. A few of them will even get the door for you. As we were checking out they even offered to help load the car. This was a huge help to us.
I’ve included a picture of ratty towels. If you find one or two don’t judge them for it. We didn’t either after we learned how it happens. They send their laundry off site to be washed. When it comes back it’s folded. There isn’t a way for them to realize it is ratty and needs to be tossed… unless they catch it before it goes out. When you’re grabbing piles of towels you aren’t really checking them one by one. You just shuffle the dirty stuff where it goes.
Again, in a pinch we’d...
Read moreWe stayed at this Bluegreen resort location over spring break for two nights. The location was really nice because it is really right in the middle of the city. We walked down to the historic area which is just along the shore/walk way. The shopping was really fun. The room felt very historic with exposed brick walls. The kitchen is just tiny with no dishwasher. So I would recommend washing your dishes before you use them since the prior guest could only hand wash or rinse the dishes before you. The kitchen which probably should not really be considered a kitchen is just tiny. There is very little counter space or a place to put together food. The tiny refrigerator was nice since we had purchased some cereal and milk for breakfast. It was a little tricky to put together some sandwiches with the very tine counter space. There was lots of space to put suitcases. The studio/one bedroom felt spacious and very nice. The bedroom does have a partition from the sitting room but it is technically all one room. There is not any doors to separate the bedroom from the sitting room if you were hoping for some privacy. You do enter the room through the hallway and then the bedroom area and then walk through to the sitting room. I would stay here again. You do have to valet park your car. I had read online that there was parking across the street which seemed cheaper than the resorts valet parking but the price the garage across the street was advertising was for 12 hours NOT 24 hours. So the resorts valet parking was cheaper. It was nice that you could take out your car if you needed to leave. I visited a garder in the area and took out my car without having to pay again for the 24 hour period. We declined the owner update so I cannot report on time the owner update was taking at this resort. Since we were there over spring break it was interesting to see how many women were in nice summer dresses and men in pink button shirts and nice pants. There was a big part of the people on the street that looked really nice. There were college students as well in torn jeans but it was fun to see everyone looking nice. It was spring break so this might not be the norm. I were to stay in Charleston again I would try and stay at this location instead of the other bluegreen location. We stayed at both on the same trip and liked the kings street a little better. It was closer to everything and the other location has a lot of bars in the area which play music until 2AM in the morning. The Kings street did not have that noise at night. The other bluegreen location was a little more spacious but I would stay at this...
