Short review: Old building which makes it slightly smelly and dusty, housekeeping does not meet basic standards. Nice check-in people. Great location close to main tourist attractions. Would not stay again. Do not recomend for families with small children.
Long: I've stayed at Holiday Inns before so I was not expecting a doorman but I knew I would get safe clean rooms. My group had 8 people, 4 kids and 4 adults, so we got 2 double rooms for a three night stay. We got to the hotel and there was caution tape at the entrance because decorative parts of the building have started to crumble. Check in was fine. When we got to the rooms one of them smelled liked mildew. We figured maybe it was just the ac and it would clear up. We were just starting to settle in when one of the kids found dirty underwear at the foot of one of the beds. I immediately went downstairs to get a room change. They apologized and gave us other rooms and offered us free breakfast (just one morning not even for the whole stay). We checked the rooms before we unpacked. No dirty clothes, but there was a mildew smell in one of the bathrooms and coming out of one of the ac units. There are a lot of spiders because of the falls nearby so windows cannot open, and the bathroom did not have working fans, so we could not air out the rooms. Because of the bad experience in the first rooms we were now paranoid and hyper aware of every little stain we might have not noticed before. So we found stains on the comforter (sheets were fine) and little stains on 2 of the towels and stickiness on the table. We had disinfecting wipes so we wiped down the tables and dressers and asked for more towels. We discussed going to another hotel but all that money for 2 rooms with a 3 night stay would be lost (booked through hotwire, no insurance) and our youngest is 4yrs old so they could deal. If we had a kid younger than 2 we would've left. The second day we were out the whole day so we did not ask for housekeeping. On the third day we tried the free breakfast they had offered us. That was another mess. It was supposed to be a continental buffet, and we had tried it at other holiday inns and it was good. However this one was not in the hotel but in the attached restaurant. They seemed confused by the breakfast tickets we had but seated us anyway. The buffet was lacking a lot of staples. Everything was sticky and messy or needed to be refilled. We went back to our table to eat and someone approached us about the breakfast tickets. They said we had to pay and I told them the hotel had said it was free because of an inconvenience. They said they were going to call the hotel to figure it out. This was annoying and in my opinion unprofessional. They could've cleared it up before seating us since now we couldn't put the food back, or just called the hotel without bothering us instead of coming over to discuss the prices and treat us like we might be trying to dine and dash. We ate and left and no one asked anything else. This was our third day there so before we left for the day we asked for housekeeping. When we got back the only visible changes were that the beds were made and the garbage cans emptied. The rooms had obviously not been vacuumed because there was dust and crumbs, and the bathroom still smelled like mildew. The sheets were not changed because it was the same stained comforter. It was our last night so there was no use in complaining. Checkout was fine. I would not stay here again.
I've taken the time to write this long review because I feel upset and a little cheated that our trip was brought down by our stay here. Niagara Falls was beautiful and breathtaking, and exploring the parks and going to the Canadian side were amazing bonding experiences for our family. If we had stayed somewhere cleaner were it felt like home and we could relax without fearing we were sleeping in filth the trip would have...
Read moreWe had a reservation on 5/18. Checked in before my husband did because he was in NC and was having trouble finding gas. This was during the pipeline breach. Front desk clerk gave me a hard time because the reservation was in my husband’s name even though I explained why he wasn’t there yet. The manager finally came over and said it was okay after confirming my last name and address matched the name and address on the reservation. Had to give the clerk my license three different times. Seemed like a bit much just to check in. Wasn’t like we were getting a $10,000 suite for free or anything. Finally got checked in and thought I was on the way to enjoy the rest of my day. Went to get the luggage and noticed the parking lot had a lot of trash and the building looked old but wasn’t terribly concerned. Stepped into the elevator and it truly looked like it hadn’t been cleaned or vacuumed in days. Got to the room and used the restroom - no toilet paper. I had brought disinfecting wipes and started wiping down the door knobs, the light switches, the remotes, etc. The amount of filth that was on those wipes was truly shocking. It was so gross. It was obvious that these areas were not cleaned much less sanitized in any way. I went into the bathroom to wash my hands and then noticed I had splashed water on the floor so I grabbed a wipe since the container was right there and wiped up the water. After just a couple of swipes with the disinfecting wipe it was literally black. I decided that we couldn’t stay there. I wasn’t comfortable with the cleanliness of the room and even had concerns about the bedding. I went down to the front desk and quietly explained that I’d like to check out and told them why and showed them the dirty wipes. I had used them all up wiping the floor so the dirty ones were in the container. I offered to leave them so they could show housekeeping and have a thorough cleaning done of the room but they declined. The front desk manager (I’m assuming) was very nice and attempted to find a room at a sister hotel but they had no availability. I thanked her and told her I’d find something on my own. I called my husband and told him what happened. He wasn’t able to find gas to leave NC so never did join me. He did email the hotel though and told them what happened. The hotel manager replied and was extremely apologetic and offered compensation in the form of reward points which he never followed through with. I’m sure some housekeeping employees take their jobs more seriously than others . With any job there are good employees and lazy employees and it’s possible that your room may be fine. My advice though if you elect to stay at this hotel is to take your own disinfecting wipes just to be on...
Read moreGood Morning, I checked out in person Saturday, however there were other guests so I did not ask to speak to a manager as I do not like to speak of negative comments in front of others; but a few things you should note as to this date, this has been my lowest scored Marriot to date. Our check in was great, quick and no issues and room was ready as should be since after check in time; when we got off elevator on floor 5, there were housekeeping carts in front and too left when we stepped off the elevator which we had to maneuver around, they were not even in front of rooms, also we were in 514 directly in front of elevator, where to the right of our door was a huge trash bag filled with garbage's from the floor, which sat there for hours. The room was "kind of clean" meaning hairs on floor in bathroom, only one roll of toilet paper on one dispenser none on the other or even an extra as we would use more than one roll on a 2 day stay; we had a 2 year old and 5 year old could not even fill the tub as it was not working, so we could not bath our kids, we had to try to shower them holding them up so they did not slip in the tub which soaked the floor and required us to use the only 4 towels we were given in the room for our stay; there was barely any conditioner in shower and I had to make a trip to the front desk for some as well as towels. One of the beds, when I removed the top thin white cover to show comforter there was a blood-looking spot or stain, which is not acceptable so I removed comforter and left it on the floor/chair next to the bed and just used a sheet. Our alarm clock in the room went off at 6am Friday morning and woke everyone up including a cranky 2 year old so that was unpleasant to say the least. The elevator most trips had a completely wet floor and smelled of chlorine from guest swimmers, which if you are going to have a pool than you need to have custodial mopping up because it was disgusting and slippery. We did not partake in complimentary breakfast because guests would leave food doors open and hot items open and were coughing all over them, so that was a waste and we ate out each morning. And lastly as far as your location, it is definitely NOT SAFE especially with children to walk in your neighborhood at all! We walked to falls after arriving Thursday and Rainbow St down was disgusting, barely any sidewalks due to construction or none at all and dilapidated houses had some sketchy people outside. We ended up having to...
