I recently had the opportunity to stay at Glorietta Bay Inn, located on Coronado Island, CA, near San Diego. While the hotel boasts a stunning location and rich history, I couldn't help but feel disappointed by the overpriced accommodations and additional fees. My experience was a mixed bag, leading me to give the hotel a 3-star rating.
The location of Glorietta Bay Inn is undoubtedly its greatest asset. Nestled on a beautiful stretch of beach, the hotel offers breathtaking views and easy access to the ocean. On a positive note, the hotel provided a comprehensive breakfast with a wide variety of options, served in a convenient window of time between 7-11 am. Additionally, the outdoor hot tub was a nice touch and offered a relaxing way to unwind.
However, the room we stayed in left much to be desired. For a rate of over $300 per night on a weekday, the room felt no better than a basic hotel room that could be found at a much lower price inland. While we understood that we were paying a premium for the beachfront location, the quality of the room did not seem to justify the cost.
The hotel's layout also proved to be a source of frustration. The property is broken up into multiple buildings, which made navigation somewhat confusing. Moreover, there were quite a few steps required to enter and exit the lobby, which could be inconvenient for some guests.
Additionally, we were disappointed to find that the hotel charges for parking, especially when there is free parking available nearby. This felt like an unnecessary expense on top of an already high room rate. Moreover, the hotel imposed a $50 resort fee, which was frustrating considering the lack of amenities offered. For the price, we expected more in terms of facilities and services to justify the resort fee.
In conclusion, while the location of Glorietta Bay Inn is undoubtedly beautiful and convenient, and the breakfast and hot tub were enjoyable, the overall experience was marred by overpriced accommodations, extra fees, and some design drawbacks. For travelers who value the beachfront location above all else, the hotel may still be worth considering. However, for those seeking better value and a more comprehensive experience, there are likely better options...
Read moreOk, I feel a little bad giving 4 stars for the room but I can't really give 5 for a couple of minor things I'll mention. But it's an old hotel and that's what's great about it. It's beautiful for it. But the room we had was a bit drafty around the doors which was a frustration. Didn't keep out much draft or noises. However, it really isn't something that would put me off going again for all that was great about it. Customer service was excellent. Really lovely people so helpful all the time. The breakfast included was plenty good considering the reasonable price of the room which also included parking and the breakfast for the resort fee. Not many places do that around San Diego it seems. Parking was easy out front. Location was really nice, can walk down to Hotel Del and the beach. Loads of restaurants nearby, nice treats feeling clean and safe and like a nice neighbour nearby. I lived being in that location more than downtown SD or where we nearly stayed up in Mission Bay. Coffee was always available in room or down in the main hotel area which is excellent. Price seemed very good value for money. I feel they have the price point just right from a consumer point of view. Also the pool and got tub were excellent even in the unusually awful weather we experienced there. Cold a wet but the pool was a reasonable temp, salt pool and the hot tub was lovely and hot, great for any weather. The room was large, beds were large and comfortable, heating worked well once we had the super put it on but that was sally no trouble for anyone. Room was pretty clean I'd say. You could nit pick things like water pressure and style of the room but really for the money and age of property it's great. It's historically interesting and architecturally lovely. A hidden gem I think especially if you've hired a car because SD is so so easy to get around quickly anyway. Thanks Glorietta,...
Read moreWhen looking for a hotel for our trip we were told this was an amazing place to stay, and it boasted a ton of great reviews.
We quickly found out this hotel which charges $400 a night (this includes a daily parking fee, taxes and a daily resort fee-I’m still not sure what this was for as there were no resort style amenities) was really not worth the rate. It also seemed to be really popular with the older generation.
We were put into a first floor room right by the pool # 671 .
This room was pretty bad -from the weird smell when we walked in to the old beds and furniture ,it reminded me more of a Motel 6 from my childhood days rather than a resort.
From the slamming of the pool gate by small children, to the ants that invaded our bathroom (had to finally put trash can outside) , the unsecured drain in the shower, the longest wait ever to just get coffee to hearing every single person that apparently wanted to hang out by our patio. Not at all what I expected.
Last night we even got a show from the neighbors at 2am ,which involved bagging on the door and a drunk man who had apparently slipped his room key to our neighbor and wanted to know why she didn’t show. Let’s just say I was ready to go home today.
Breakfast was about par with what you would get anywhere.
Only great aspect was the proximity to the beach, but that unfortunately had signs everywhere to not go near the water due to sewage/chemical contamination
Overall we wont be back and wont suggest this place to anyone. Maybe staying in the mansion is better , as I think that’s where all the photos come...
