Where do I begin? From the time I made a reservation several months ago to final checkout on August 3rd, the "Bower Experience" exceeded expectations! To follow are some thoughts regarding our visit should you be trying to determine where to stay in Coronado! |Prior to making our reservation Danny ( Guest experience Supervisor) answered the phone with such enthusiasm and friendliness! It made a wonderful first impression! He went way above and beyond taking time to describe the rooms and insuring that we chose what location was best for our stay. He also gladly acted as our concierge making recommendations and even providing his personal cell number to help us plan our time! I was afraid I was emailing him too many questions but he was always so responsive and helpful! By the time we arrived we were all set with a plan! |My husband and I were traveling for leisure for a 5 day trip to celebrate our 36th anniversary/ his birthday. We had never been to San Diego so I had been "researching" where to stay! I know the Del Coronado is an iconic attraction but I was looking for a more relaxing less "touristy" crowded place - Oh BOY! were we glad we found The Bower! |The Del was beautiful but it definitely was far more crowded and busy. It had more of a "Disney resort feel" ( resort $$$$ prices with a lot more big families, weddings, corporate events , and kids running everywhere). This is not meant to be a negative , we love our kids! However, for this trip we were able to still walk right across the street to enjoy everything at the Del and then return to escape to our far more peaceful less crowded environment, with very attentive staff, and just relax and soak in the view from the Dive roof top bar. | Upon arrival the staff all greeted us as though we were their only guests! |Even the valets we encountered throughout our stay Wednesday-Sunday were always welcoming, helpful, and genuinely friendly throughout our visit. |When we entered the doors at the Bower on Wednesday afternoon it immediately had a great quiet relaxing overall feel!|Michaela welcomed us in and talked to us about the hotel and our plans while we enjoyed a nice glass of wine in what they called the " living room" by the open air fire. She made a great first impression which really set the tone for our stay. We also had to brag to her a bit about how helpful Danny had been prior to our arrival! |This new boutique Hotel was formerly the Villa Capri on Coronado. We learned it had been recently beautifully renovated and it is perfectly located directly across Orange Blvd from the Del Coronado. I personally loved the design elements that gave it such a peaceful relaxing vibe! — but what truly made our stay unforgettable was the above and beyond hospitality from every team member we encountered.|From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel completely at home. We had everything we needed (and more)!!|We opened our door and found a lovely note in the room regarding our anniversary with 2 really nice Fellow water bottles, then while we waited for our bags to be delivered to our room our favorite cocktail was delivered by staff from the Dive ( The Bowers awesome rooftop bar! ) . My advice would be " just ask" and they all do what they can to make it happen!| Next , we met the General manager, Sean Murphy. We were again pleasantly surprised with Sean's accessibility and willingness to help us plan anything we wanted to do.! Everything that was recommended by Danny, Sean, and all the other staff we really enjoyed! |We can't say enough about the team to be honest! I have to give one more " shout out" as an example of customer service excellence! During our stay there was a gentleman ( not sure his name) who was actually very busy vacuuming and cleaning whenever we saw him. He noticed me walk out of our room with an ice bucket. He stopped what he was doing and immediately said he would take care of this for me and promptly returned a bucket of ice to our room. You just don't typically find staff being intentional like that! That's a team player for sure! | |Overall , It's just rare to experience this level of personalized service — we were able to observe how hard all of the staff work and truly care about the success of their business. The hospitality industry can be very hard and these guys made it look easy! The staff truly turned a nice stay into an exceptional one. Read moreWe booked a six-night stay at The Bower, a new boutique hotel in Coronado that promises curated luxury for the discerning traveler. The hotel opened two months earlier, and its design is sleek, stylish, and clearly geared toward the tech-savvy set. We arrived with high expectations. We are seasoned travelers in our seventies who looked forward to seeing what a new property such as this had to offer in function and thoughtfulness.
What we found was a property that dazzles at a glance but stumbled (often literally) on the follow-through. Let’s start with the room: It’s chic. No doubt. But minimalism crossed into impracticality. With three suitcases and a roller case to support our near week-long stay, we began finding to fit ourselves into our room we were contestants in a very upscale game of Tetris. There is no closet, just a wall-mounted “dresser” that leaves no space to navigate side-by-side between the bed and the wall. For two older adults, that’s not a minor inconvenience. And while there are design-forward amenities, details like the lack of fresh water in the decanter for a pour-over coffee kit, a previously opened snack jar, and the absence of hand towels, tissues, and washcloths upon arrival hinted at style over substance. Even more unsettling was there was a used makeup remover pads were left in the bathroom counter dispenser.
Breakfast our first morning at the rooftop restaurant: The view is a visual delight but was another mixed bag. We were told at the check-in desk that it opened at 7:30 a.m., but when we arrived, the friendly wait staff they were not open until 8:00. We left and returned then and were seated. After being served lukewarm coffee and a 30-minute wait for food that arrived cool-to-warm took some of the shine off the beautiful plating.
Housekeeping was another coin toss: When we returned after our first day, we found our room untouched. Management offered us drinks on the rooftop lounge as a conciliatory gesture, but the crowding led us to retreat instead into the village. That said, we appreciated the staff’s later gesture to comp a breakfast - a mark of hospitality trying to right a wrong. The room was eventually serviced, but the pattern of inconsistencies continued. The next night, a neighboring room turned into a dance club, music thumping from 12:30 to 3:00 a.m. despite our call to the front desk. Sleeplessness is not the kind of memory one expects from a “relaxing” boutique stay.
The good news? The breakfast the following morning was much improved—hot, tasty, and on time; and our room was freshly made up with crisp linens. But throughout our stay flickering room lights that required our waiving our hands to activate motion sensors and nightly electrical outages for the nightstand electrical outlets (again requiring hand waiving to activate) weren’t just annoying but disrupted my sleep. As a CPAP user, I rely on steady power to may machine to breathe during sleep, and these nightly interruptions meant waking up multiple times. Other small details became bigger with time: • The stylish black toilet paper (yes, black) is avant-garde, but wholly impractical for… well, quality control. • The heavy, sticky sliding bathroom door proved hard for my wife to operate. • The in-room pour-over coffee setup? A nice touch but was not refreshed and so was only usable one day and only then the filter packet required the aid of nail clippers to open the packet. I did discover there are decanters of fresh coffee in the service area next to the hall.
Final Thoughts: The Bower is a beautiful space, in an ideal location at the end of the Village near shops, restaurants, and the beach. But for those of us who value not just aesthetics but comfort, cleanliness, and consistency, the hotel still has growing pains to resolve. We don’t expect perfection, but we do expect reliability, especially at this price point. Given our experience, pack light, bring earplugs, and you may want ask a lot of questions...
