I really wanted to help out the nice manager/owner with a decent review as his friendliness was refreshing. The lobby was in decent shape (not like photos, though). And the price was lower than other hotels near by, which is a plus. However...
I'll start with the electrical. I noticed problems with the lamps in my room as soon as I arrived. They posed a real risk of electrocution, possibly fire risk. They were metal lamp bases with electrical outlets in the base hanging loose, exposing the wiring to the metal base. A wrong touch and zap. I informed the manager, stating I didn't need new ones, but they needed to be thrown out immediately. We left for dinner and when we returned, someone had gone up and plugged them back in! So they didn't even seem to understand. There were so many fire code violations in our "newly renovated" room. I've attached photos of some of the electrical problems, these are only a few, the most serious, of what I observed in our room.
The microwave had to be unplugged to stop running, so we were afraid to use that. The back of the toilet was loose. There was no working fan in the bathroom, though there was a mystery light switch that didn't do anything. On a related note, curious black splotches were on the walls of the bathroom (mold?). The floating PVC flooring was nice & new, though not correctly installed (either the subfloor wasn't leveled or it was put in too tight and was bowing). Some skylights were broken with duct tape over the holes. There were ants all over the room.
The safety of the guests seems to be completely disregarded in other areas, as well. We went to use the pool the day before we were scheduled to check out and there was broken glass. Obviously, this isn't the hotel's fault. I reported the glass to the manager/owner. He swept up the glass near the pool and said his maintenance guy had already vacuumed the pool, so it was safe. However, clearly visible on the top step of the pool was a chunk of glass. I pointed it out, and he insisted it was completely safe. If you know anything about broken glass in pools, you know how hard it is to fix the problem. It is most definitely NOT safe to swim with glass shards. We had finished the reason for our stay in Hutchinson, so we just went ahead and packed up to leave a day earlier than planned. When I took the room key to check out, there was a family headed toward the pool. I stated again, there is glass in the pool, you need to close the pool (usually 2 hours, unless local code expressly states you have to empty it & dry it completely). Or at the very least warn people! I absolutely could not believe he was allowing people to swim with broken glass. I really hope no one got hurt.
We reserved 6 nights in June '22, stayed 5 of them. We paid eighty-five/night (including taxes).
I really think it's only a matter of time before someone staying at this hotel is seriously injured or worse. Please stay...
Read moreIf I could rate this place as a negative 5 star or 0 star I totally would. I would not recommend staying at this place, no matter how cheap the rooms are. Let's start with the room. Not only was there a funky almost mold\cigarette smell in there but at like 2 am water from what I assume the bathroom above ours started pouring out and flooding our bathroom. It leaked through the ceiling and onto our floor and tub shower. It probably leaked for 1.5 hours according to my wife. I went and talked to the night staff and they said they was nothing they could do about it. I later found the manager and he said that someone just left the shower curtain out of the shower and that's why it was leaking......right.....I bet the floor above the ceiling tiles is moldy because management won't properly fix the issues. Also the paint and dry wall in the bathroom was pealing up and swelling out from the extra water. Now they did give us like a 20 dollar discount on our stay, that's why I gave them 2 stars for rooms. However I don't feel like that was good enough. Moving on to one of the other nights another guest on our floor decided to smoke pot. My wife and I and the kids could not only smell it coming into our room but the entire hallway smelt of pot at like midnight. I also said something to the manager about this. He said and did nothing and the night staff lied and said they didn't smell it. Moving on to the breakfast, my kids were pretty disappointed about it because not only were there weird slimy string looking stuff hanging out of the juice machine (not pulp), but the waffle batter looked like it had stayed out over night and separated or something along with being the wrong color. Mixing it didn't help. It looked absolutely disgusting. I told my kids your not eating or drinking anything from here. We will not be staying at this place ever again and I recommend that no one else stay here either. It's not worth it in my opinion. There are better cheaper rooms elsewhere. Lessons...
Read moreThe room was nice. Clean and larger than most. We were on the second floor - front desk said we could use the outdoor ramp. We unloaded the car, hauled our luggage up the ramp and then our card key wouldn’t work. I remained with luggage while my husband went back to the front desk. I was also on the phone to them - it was late afternoon with the sun beating down on me! The front desk woman came to the door and told us the card reader didn’t work - there was a stick to prop the door open (doesn’t seem safe!). Not sure why she told us to use the ramp if she knew the reader wasn’t working! We used the stairs going forward. The AC wouldn’t regulate - we were either freezing or hot. Bed was pretty comfortable - but there was NO outlet in one side - good thing I have a 10-foot chord. It was strung from the desk to my side of the bed (trip hazard).
We used a different credit card to guaranty our room - and upon arrival paid with another credit card. The front desk person ran the charge on BOTH cards. She was unable to reverse the incorrect charge and said a manager had to take care of it. The charge was reversed in the morning. Guarantying the room and paying for the room are two different things!
We have always stayed at Super 8s! This trip kind of soured us on using in the future. We stayed at three during this trip (Lubbock, Moore OK, and Hutchinson). This one was by far the best one of the three - clean, friendly staff, a pool (which we were too tired to use), and even breakfast. We want to come back soon to tour the Salt Mine and a couple of other interesting things we discovered in Hutchinson during our short overnight stay. Unfortunately, we’ll think long and hard about staying at Super 8s in the future. All-in-all - this particular one was pretty good...
