We paid almost $1k to stay for 3 nights… I expected more. We’ve paid less to stay in 4 star resorts in CO. This is a property owned under a large umbrella of properties in “the village” in snowshoe. There is no front desk at this property - it is only accessible by hotel key card, which you have to acquire from the front desk at another hotel called Allegheny (spelling?) springs nearby. It is within walking distance, but a massive inconvenience. We wouldn’t have minded any of this, but we were given no instructions or directions prior to our arrival. When it’s 25° outside, and you’re loading in tons of suitcases and gear, it’s unbelievably annoying to have to run around to different buildings only to find out you have to go somewhere else first. Not to mention the fact that we had ZERO cell reception at snowshoe in general, so it wasn’t a matter of making a simple phone call. There is a paid lot near the hotel, and a lot across the street designated for snowshoe lodgers (that you have to have a room key to use). The designated areas I suppose are used to load in suitcases and gear to any of the hotels at snowshoe are almost always full… the only free lot is at “top of the world” and too far to walk.
Once we realized that we needed to go to Allegheny springs to check in, we drove over there. Again there was no parking, as with any hotel we expected to park temporarily in the loading area with flashers on, out of the way. We were immediately and aggressively greeted by a valet who was asking us to move our car and being incredibly condescending and rude in the process. He kept asking us to move “over here,” broadly gesturing to an unclear area of the loading zone, and then getting more and more angry when we weren’t parking exactly the way he wanted us to. We finally got irritated enough that we put the car in park somewhere out of the way, ignoring the valet, and went in to check in.
From there things seemed to go smoothly, until we bought $100 worth of groceries and got back to the room to discover our refrigerator was not working at all. We called Allegheny springs and explained the situation, to which we were told that they would put in a maintenance request - who knows how long that would take (they couldn’t tell me), and they wanted us to stay in the room and wait. We did not pay for lift tickets to sit in the room half the day to make sure our overpriced groceries didn’t go bad.
After several hours and no word from the property, we finally called back and asked to be moved to a different room since we had perishables that couldn’t be out for much longer. They finally agreed, found us a room on the same floor, but told us that we couldn’t move into it until check-in time which wasn’t until 4pm - completely negating the purpose of moving us somewhere with a working refrigerator. I told them that wasn’t going to work and that our day had already been taken up by the whole ordeal and that they needed to let us “check in” early. They finally agreed, we had to walk back over to Allegheny springs to “check in” again, then walk back and move all of our things over to the new room.
The new room we were moved into had a working refrigerator, but the bed was on the floor. At $300 per night, it’s insane to have to crouch down to get into bed.
The icing on the cake was being awoken at 2am on our last night by the fire alarm and ushered outside to the hotel across the street. While I understand precautions have to be taken, it ended up being the result of some kind of mechanical machinery failure and not a fire… By then we were more than ready to leave. Good thing we were then woken up by someone down the hall blasting music at 6am, so we could start packing to get the hell out of there.
Between everything previously mentioned, and the fact that we felt like we were staying in a frat house… Save your money. Snowshoe is beautiful, but it looks like there are other properties on the mountain for not much more that would offer a much...
Read moreI recently went to Snowshoe Bike Park for the weekend. Other than staying at the mountain there aren't other options except for camping. I rented a Jr. Suite at Expedition Station for 3 nights. I've stayed there before so I knew what to expect. It's the least expensive place in the Village. It had a queen size bed and I think the sofa turned into a bed, a wall-mounted TV, a small table and kitchenette with mini-fridge, microwave, and a 2-burner cooktop. The kitchenette is supplied with dishes, cutlery, etc. The bathroom had plenty of towels. The suite was well worn and could stand to be updated, but it was very clean. No maid service is provided. They're doing some sort of construction on the one side of the building. It was also very quiet, although I don't think there were many occupants.||||The price of the room was reasonable considering it had a kitchenette. But once the state tax, mountain tax, resort fee, cleaning fee (even though there's no maid service) and whatever else is added in it DOUBLED THE PRICE of the room! I brought all of my food and snacks with me and did not eat out at all. I overheard a resident refer to it as comparable to Disney World for what they charge. So I was perfectly happy to cook all my meals in the room.||||It's a nice place to visit and it's a beautiful area. You have to be comfortable with no cell service (it's in the radio free area because of the Green Bank Observatory). However, most of the rooms do have WiFi calling. There is a small but not well stocked store on the mountain where the prices are high but if you need bread or eggs it's your only option. I'm not sure if everything is open during the week when it's between seasons. I've never been there during the ski season and I suspect it's busier during the...
Read moreI understand that this is a ski resort and we do come in open to the quality we are getting. Last year we stayed at Silver Creek and while the unit was incredibly outdated we did not have any real complaints. Unfortunately, our stay at Expedition Station fell well below our minimum expectations. First, we did not have HOT water the entire stay. Our shower water was lukewarm at its best. We called every day to have someone come and look but kept getting passed around and ultimately nobody ever came. You are seriously not going to fix a hot water issue for guests? Terrible. Second, the beds are essentially on the floor. It was a throwback to our college days. Sadly, our bodies are not what they were in college, and getting in and out of the bed was challenging. Third, the lighting in the unit is lacking. You essentially have mood lighting. There is a lack of lighting and the lamps you do have are essentially mood lights. Fourth, the windows are paper thin. You could hear every detail of every conversation down below. On New Year's Eve, we were kept up until almost 3 am due to the crowds below and with the windows, it felt as if they were in the room with us. We were really disappointed with this location and would never consider staying there again much less recommend...
