Harbor Square Suites — Hotel in Put-in-Bay Township

Do NOT! I am appalled at this establishment. I don't even know what to address first. The office is always locked, you can't get anyone on the phone to answer a concern, and the girls working the will say they have to call their manager and then the next day pretend to be a manager. They are young, college students and have no idea how to address the customer. The room was overpriced and charged us a different rate then we were quoted on the reservation. Room smelled of mold and must, not very clean and if you need anything, ( extra towels, soap etc.) good luck; you will not get anyone to help you. Our trip started off with the golf cart issue, horrible, barely ran, and we were stuck with no lights and in the pouring rain. We had to switch it out and it was filthy, polluted with spiders. The young man at the restaurant got a towel and helped us clean the cart. When we addressed the issue with the front desk about having to change the cart for the third time she was not very helpful and used the excuse " it is spider season here"! When explaining that this is unacceptable and as trying to communicate with her the issues we were having regarding room, cart, cost of the room, another so called manager of the restaurant (young college student with no experience in working with the public) threatened to call the police on me! Awful, to say the least. I could go on and on regarding this stay, do yourself a favor and DO NOT STAY HERE. We tried to call it a day and check out early the next morning and the young girl told us we would be charged anyway. Upon checking out the hotel printer did not work therefore we could not get a copy of our bill as well. Nothing good to say period about this location. We booked a large room for the second week of September for my mother's birthday party. We made the reservations in May. Family members from all over the State were coming in for the party. Two days before the event, I called the hotel to see which golf cart rental facility would be closest to the hotel. The person that answered the phone told me that they had cancelled our reservation due to the fact that a dog had destroyed the room and they had no other rooms available. I had read other reviews stating a similar reason for cancelling a reservation...underwear clogged a toilet, etc. What actually happened was that they were able to rent the room for two nights for a higher price than we were paying and so they cancelled our reservation that had been paid in full for four months to take another reservation for more money. I told them that I would probably be okay with some torn carpet, etc., and asked what damage was done. I was told it was none of my business. My sister-in-law was on the Island the following week and asked to see the room, pretending that she was planning a bridal shower for the following Spring. The room was in perfect condition, no sign of any major dog destruction. Several of the employees told her that this hotel does this frequently. The owner refused to get on the phone when I called. My husband and I stayed the first weekend of October 2024. Ms. Rachel contacted us via text on our way to the ferry. She asked that we text her when we got to the island and she would make sure we had everything we needed. The trip was my idea because my husband wanted to fish in Lake Erie. We arrived at the suites, Ms. Rachel was waiting for us. We went through all of the necessary stuff and she showed us to our room. It was clean, newly remodeled. There was a huge stack of towels and wash cloths. She showed us how to work the TV, the lock system, and gave us a list of good fishing spots. She offered us a golf cart, but we declined. She also gave us the internet password. We drove our vehicle around the island and realized we had better take Rachel up on a golf cart. The island was so clean and beautiful. The water was perfect for fishing. My husband caught 3 nice size catfish over the weekend. Because it's the end of the season, some things were a little more lax. Rachel was so easy to work with. We promised we would most probably make reservations for next year 2025 and it should be earlier so some places weren't closed. We had a wonderful experience!!!! The best thing about our stay, besides Ms. Rachel, was the newly remodeled shower!!!! It's a giant square that could easily house 4 or more people.
