This hotel was a renovated Holiday Inn Express that had been changed over to The Kinney, a Hilton Tapestry collection property. This place has potential because they've done a great job decorating and having a fun game area. Staff is pleasant.
RESORT CREDIT -
Because of our status, we had $30 / day resort credit. Unfortunately due to staffing issues their restaurant & bar were closed except for Saturday morning breakfast. Sunday night they had beer & wine only. We ended up using one of the resort credits on a bottle of champagne, although it was a cheaper brand than was listed on the menu.
It was hard to use the resort credit when I have Celiac disease and our waiter said that even the eggs have gluten (which makes no sense.) We ended up having to get 4 cappuccinos on the last day to use our resort credit.
NOISE-
While it looked cool and they did a good job on decorating, as well as having a fun game area for adults, the walls were SO thin and the curtains didn't blackout the sun in the morning. The curtains are actually too short, so sunlight streams through.
People who don't know how to close a door and just let it slam behind them were common and it literally shook the entire room every time it happened. It felt like the building was going to collapse when the doors slammed which made me wonder if there is something structurally wrong with the building.
The older I get, the less patience I have for kids who scream and go wild in public. (It's a good thing that I don't have kids.) In the morning, some little kids were making so much noise banging on stuff and screaming next door that I was able to yell, from my bed, at them to quit making noise. I know they heard me because the noise instantly stopped for a few hours.
You can hear staff on their two-way radios at like 7 AM, and on the weekend. I don't want to be up so early due to noise. I don't know how they can soundproof, but this building needs it.
MAINTENANCE -
I let staff know that our mirrored closet door wouldn't close. The tub spout was also loose and pieces of grout were missing in the shower, which may explain the water damage on the walls. There was stuff peeling around our ceiling in our room as well.
I also had to take a bath with a rag stuffed in the drain because it was missing a stopper. I mentioned it to the front desk and the staff pulled a stopper out right next to the desk. She said they have a problem with people stealing the stoppers? Very strange issue.
CONCLUSION -
This could potentially be a cool hotel if it was an adults only place and maintenance issues were fixed, but as is, I probably wouldn't stay here again due to the thin walls and doors that make the...
Read moreUpdate #3, March 2024: it appears that there is a new manager at this hotel, and it seems that today she has been very busy responding to the many google reviews, good and bad.
Comforting to know that the previous customer-service-zombie manager that I dealt with has moved on, perhaps to a new role in customer service at a maximum-security State prison.
Update #2, Feb 2024: I've been to SLO a couple of times this year, and I've stayed at a Motel 6 a few miles south of town.
The Motel 6 is MUCH better than this $300 a night Wayfarer Hilton / remodeled Holiday Inn ripoff.
I've stayed at three different motels on Monterey St. in SLO in the last year, and none of them have had any justification for their high prices besides a convenient location near the school.
Update #1: after weeks of emails with a Hilton "support center" in India and a few emails and a phone call with a person in Texas, he offered me a free one-night stay at any Hilton hotel in the USA.
After my experience at an overpriced, remodeled 1970's Holiday Inn in San Luis Obispo, why would I want to stay at ANY Hilton hotel?
Maybe I would find a Hilton where they have a concept of sanitary room maintenance, actual customer service, and managers that care? No thanks.
Original review trimmed:
I checked in to my room Friday night and the toilet seat was up in the bathroom. Bad sign ... somebody had urinated in the toilet and didn't flush it. This is supposed to be a high-end hotel. What a joke!
Hilton! You can't charge $300+ per night for a hotel with chipped walls and doors in the common areas, stained carpets in the hallways, broken faucets in the bathroom, no stopper in the bathtub (another reviewer mentioned this too), someone else's leftovers in the fridge, and a heater that doesn't work. I've stayed in a lot of hotels in the USA, Mexico, Brazil, and Europe and I have never checked into a room where someone had already used the toilet.
On Monday AM, I talked to another manager and she went into auto-pilot-customer service mode and was very apologetic, but didn't really seem to care how shocking it is to find a soiled toilet when checking in to a supposedly high-end hotel.
My son is a freshman at Cal Poly, so I will be going to SLO a lot in the next four years. I won't be staying at the Kinney again, and I will tell everyone about my experience there.
Update: Megan Taylor, the manager that I talked to on Monday AM emailed me this week and offered me a $75 refund because their restaurant wasn't open to give me the full $120 food credit. Really? A $75 refund on a $1070 hotel bill? Wow, how generous, I sure hope Hilton...
Read moreI was so excited when I stumbled upon the Kinney while looking for a place to stay in SLO for a trip across California. I'm from Pittsburgh, and this hotel seemed to compare to the Ace or the Monaco in style. This hotel was the one I was most excited to stay at... unfortunately, our time was awful.
We had spent the day enjoying SLO, so it was 7ish when we checked in. The lobby was bustling with restaurant/bar crowds, spilling into the cooly styled lobby. We were informed (politely) by the staff member that we could choose between the only two rooms they had left- much to my surprise, both attached right there in the lobby. We chose, and they staff member said that was the better choice, the other could get very loud- so we were a little surprised when we saw they were right beside each other. To the lobby-annex we went- for real, these two rooms are basically parallel with the front desk.
Our room appeared to be modernly updated and cool- it IS styled very well, the concept is great, though if you look at the actual construction of baseboards/etc you can see things peeling away- not great for being "newly renovated". I loved all of the mid-century furniture and would have bought the throw blanket in a heartbeat. But, the decor was quickly overshadowed by the amount of noise spilling into our room- not only from the lobby, but also from the pool our room overlooked and intense blue light was beaming. We went out for dinner hoping that the parties would end, but when we arrived back it was just as loud as before.
At last, people cleared the areas and we thought we'd be able to rest. Nope. The lobby continued blaring music, and the party literally moved to the room above us. The light leak from the lobby needed blocked by a towel. 103 & 101 just shouldn't be guest rooms. I literally laid in bed searching the internet for another hotel near by with rooms available.
Housekeeping knocked on our door when we were getting ready to leave (30~ to checkout) and I was shocked that they were already opening the door before I made it there myself. There was literally not enough time to shout "coming" or "on my way" or heck, "don't come in I'm changing!" before they opened the door. I felt very invaded and rushed.
It may be cute, but if you like to sleep, pick...
