I checked into Svengaards Inn Solvang on 4/4/2025. I went to my room and instantly knew this hotel was awful — dark, smelly, and visibly dirty. It reeked of neglect. I opened the windows just to make it bearable and sat at the small table, trying to figure out what to do. Then I looked at the bed and my stomach dropped. The pillow was one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen in a so-called hotel. It was deeply stained, visibly greasy, and looked like it hadn’t been washed or replaced in years. It was revolting. I felt physically sick just looking at it. That’s when I knew I couldn’t stay even a minute longer. I went straight to the front desk and told Eric what I’d found, that the room was filthy, dark, and completely unacceptable, and that the pillow alone was enough to warrant a refund. I made it very clear that I would not be staying. He shrugged and said he couldn’t refund me because I had paid through a third party. I told him, clearly, that I had booked directly with him. He still refused to take any responsibility. His only offer? He said he’d “bring more pillows when he felt like it.” Almost an hour later, Eric finally showed up, not with clean, fresh pillows, but with old, small square pillows made up of giant hunks of foam the size of grapefruits. It was clear that he didn’t care and had no interest in fixing the situation. He was just stalling until I gave up. I told him again: the smell, the dirt, the disgusting pillow, all of it was beyond tolerable. I took photos, videos, and documented the time I left. I didn’t touch anything, and I certainly didn’t stay the night. I was forced out by their complete lack of basic cleanliness and their refusal to fix the situation they caused. ||I communicated with them directly in many emails that I deserve to have all my money back and they have refused. They returned only a small portion. I want others to know what kind of place this really is and how insincere and inaccurate managements replies to reviews and...

Read moreWe stayed Memorial Day weekend 2021. The website of the parent company, every travel site, and on their own freaking wooden sign on the property advertise breakfast. But nope. I've read reviews from early 2020 mentioning broken elevator - this still applies. They advertise 2pm check-in, but handwritten sign on site says 3pm, but due to no elevator we were encouraged to return later than 3pm for our check-in as housekeeping was still on the 2nd floor. The A/C seems broken until you locate a switch hidden behind the TV that you can switch heat/AC on/off. It is on the SE end of the town (I think), so it's easy to get in/out. It was pretty clean. If not for the town being sold out during a high-travel holiday, I would have never, ever, ever paid that much to stay at this hotel. I told the polite but beleaguered front desk staff member my feedback on the lack of breakfast upon his inquiry about our stay at checkout, and he asked "where did you see that?" I responded, "your site, the sign you have on the corner of the property...." and he said he had shared that with the owners....so....they're apparently not that concerned about false advertising. A lot of guests appeared (by sound and number) appreciated the pool. All rooms face the pool, so prepare for noise. But thankfully they limit hours to 9pm. Perhaps they like to swim, or may have also missed finding the A/C on switch behind the TV. Out of 4 hotels during our CA trip, it was our least favorite. Will not stay at again. But if you're out of options, they provide a well-made and clean bed. Once you walk up three flights of stairs to get to it if you're unfortunately on...
