Visited here during Lillejuleaften (Little Christmas Eve on 12/23) to enjoy the holiday atmosphere. This restaurant had great décor to keep your eyes constantly entertained, from wood carvings on the booths to miniature homes of all styles along the ceiling's border and Danish sayings painted on the wood beams. They even have a miniature store at the front where you can buy jams and flour to make your own Aebelskiver at home.
It was extremely crowded when we arrived, as expected given the holiday, but thankfully we were seated immediately because we opted for the bar instead of a table. While our servers were doing their best, it was obvious they were running very behind. They didn't have any utensils for us to use and it took a very long time to get our food. We watched as plates were assembled behind the counter in front of us, then popped into the microwave to be reheated. Not the most appetizing site, but to be honest, our orders were still delicious.
We ordered the Danish meatball and Danish sausage plates, both of which came with red cabbage and mashed potatoes with gravy. The meatballs also came with steamed vegetables, which were the only things I didn't quite care for as they were mushy and lacked proper seasoning. The other items were great in flavor and texture, except the chicken sausage was drier than the others, most likely because the fat content was lower than say the pork link. The mustard dipping sauce was tasty and helped moisten the chicken sausage.
The famous Aebelskiver was definitely worth stopping in, but with 3 large dough balls, it's just too much for 2 people to eat comfortably after a full meal. I'd recommend skipping the ice cream if you find yourself in this situation. Otherwise, you can line up at the outdoor pick up window to just order Aebelskiver and skip waiting for a table altogether. It reminded my of a funnel cake ball stuffed with raspberry...
Read moreThe two stars are wholly referring to a very responsive busser who caught a bee and took it outside. He also refilled our coffees. Sweet kid!
The æbelskivers ARE tasty, but I recommend you get them at the window and then run from the swarm of bees that live at the entrance! Enjoy them as you walk around.
Otherwise, the food here is just bad. You can skim through my reviews, they're almost always positive, but this place should have a warning posted out front that it's microwaved or cold food meant for an employee cafeteria under a Vegas casino. The sausage is gray and room temperature. My turkey sandwich had cold, wet, soggy deli meat in it and tasted terrible. Even the croissant couldn't save it. Even the cranberry sauce was watery and almost brown in color. The pastrami sandwich was also really bad, and the server didn't bring any pickles for it like we had asked. The other sandwich for our group was flavorless and bland, as well. It's as if they pull all the ingredients out of a lukewarm tub of bath water marinade before they plate them.
This was our second time dining here - the first time it took us forever to get someone's attention to order a coffee at the counter, then they dropped the coffee WITH the bill (I guess we weren't ordering anything else?), and no one ever came back to even refill the cup. That was the day we got the cold sausage and 'skivers.
I haven't tried the æbelskivers anywhere else yet, so for now I'll just say that those are good here. If I find some better ones, you know I'll update this so fast lol In the meantime, avoid spending your money here - Solvang has so many amazing places to eat, so choose a different place that you'll...
Read moreFirst time in Solvang and the experience with the rude, unprofessional manager at this restaurant with zero costumer service has left me with a negative memory of this city. The owner has these ridiculous policies and a bitter/ rude attitude to go with them too, obviously he trains his female manager to be the same. You can read these from his responses to customer reviews. The only reason they’re in business is because they’re in a touristy location and many people like myself don’t check the negative reviews if they’re hungry and happen to be walking by and decide to give the place a try. I’m only leaving this review hoping that it helps others to check this restaurant’s reviews about how mediocre and bland their food is, how dirty their kitchen is, how they give you microwaved food and how rude and unprofessional the manager is especially with different races and ethnic groups. The owner lies in his responses about checking the cameras and is completely wrong with his timelines to justify his employees behaviors. He just tries to make himself and business look good and never apologizes for their unprofessional behavior. Who would want to support them, I’m glad we walked out and left with our group once we were confronted with the manager’s unwelcoming, rude and snarky attitude! As she had said “there are plenty of other eateries in that town”, so don’t waste your time and money...
