Overall, good for the value. Reasons I choose this hotel for our stay were value, beachfront, kitchens in rooms, and the pool table (we are pool players!). It is an OLD hotel that needs much updating but was alright.
I'm listing the good and bad in detail. Hope it helps! The Good: Security-always saw them walking around and checking the property at night Pool Table was a plus Staff was friendly and helpful, most of the time Location - Beachfront, CVS on corner, walking distance to several restaurants and stores Kitchen was mostly stocked with items needed Beach chair rental company directly in front of hotel on beach was great! Friendly, accommodating and helpful! Plenty of chairs, tables and loungers in pool area which is much larger than pictures make it out to be. Sold ice at front desk (which you need for freezer) Breakfast on weekend mornings
The Bad: Kids in the hot tub (multiple times), and though this is more a parent issue, it was recurring throughout our 5 day stay even when mentioning to hotel staff. The final night trying to enjoy and relax was near impossible and here's what i witnessed...(one family) -toddler with regular diaper on and when it got too full they took it off and just put his unpotty trained self in the hot tub. This I called out and simply would not be quiet about. -kids jumping from side or step into water splashing everywhere -kids dumping sodas into water Walk to beach with most direct access was thru thick sand and littered with trash. You could take a walkway by going around the hotel to either side but again not most convenient. Shower- 1st, if you are taller than 5'5 you will need to squat to get under the shower head. 2nd, the water pressure was seriously lacking. 3rd, there was NO possible way to keep water from getting on the floor in excessive amounts. Thus needing extra towels because after 2 showers in a row you needed to literally wring them out. Floors- Not just shower but throughout the tiled floor areas it was so slick you needed to have towels on the floor for safety. We did use the dehumidifier in the room multiple times daily but it would only help for a little while. Towels- started with 3 for 4 of us. Asked for extra and they wanted old for new. Explained floor situation in both shower, kitchen and vanity area and it was a battle. Plus 3 of 4 of us were females with long hair (ladies you will understand). Thankfully brought our own towels for the beach. Plugs- Oh. The. Lack. Of. Plugs. and even the 4 they had in the room only half worked. We went to the store for a multi-outlet extension cord because only one plug between the 2 beds worked and that had the only lamp plugged into it. Upon checkout I asked for a copy of the receipt and was told I could not have one....ummm ok. Reasoning was because I booked through a 3rd party and it would come from them. After I again asked, and was again denied I asked to take a picture of the receipt at least. Again denied. When I asked for a manager, the young man at the front desk, told me "fine you can take a picture, you obviously are irritated". So i did and left, as I didn't have words to say in response to his statement. If you request a south view room, make sure to also request 5th floor or higher, or you will be staring at the "event center" of the hotel though looking over the balcony there was the pool. Breakfast on weekend mornings. Bland, not very fresh and...
Read moreWould you like to star in your own Horror movie? This is the perfect setting ! You arrive at your destination and your handed these bracelets! Wear them or else the security guard will pepper spray you. Now head to your room with your key card. open the door and your met with every requirement for a nice setting in a horror. The lighting in these rooms is pretty bad! Especially the Bathroom with only one light! its off brand soaps glistening on the tub side. You back out bewildered, only to meet the kitchen area! The soap has two colors!!! Green and blue! Is it because its fancy? No! They seemingly just refilled the soap!? You place the soap down gently and look around more. Stuff still remains in the freezer in your rooms fridge. After emptying that you look into the dish washer for a cute sign that says "out of order" nice. You weren't really gonna use it so that's fine you guess. Greeted by the sight of your stove covered in foil! It really said something and the vibes where echoing a sense of foreboding doom. Backing out the kitchen I was really put off and honestly wanting to run away. I am thinking the price point should of been higher, because I might be in trouble. This room so far was setting the scene so well for a classic horror movie that I was shivering. My eyes catch the rest of the room in one fowl glance. I looked at stained bed and a ugly couch pushed up to a conjoined room door? yikes. The rug was cut up and made me feel this room had some history. Even the mirror was worn down and grimy. The TV is so small you need to squint to see it.
Now the room was not perfect and while the hotel over all needs to be redone desperately. While I was leaving to go see the city at night I over heard the front desk. Talking to the security guard and joking (at least I hope) that if she where to see any one with out the band Pepper spray them. She laughed nervously and held onto the bullet proof vest she wore. The staff eyeing me and my friends as we walked past an empty area in the hotel. Searching for our wrist bands.
Breakfast is just cold waffles by the way. Only cold waffles.
Now if slow elevators, creepy rooms, and threats from the staff do not scare you. Why not try to get help from someone at the front desk. It was probably more lively in a grave yard then the front desk. Ok avoid them what about the house keeping? Who are wearing jeans and looks messy and disorganized ! Accompanied by dirty looks and passing comments between them.
My friends room was no better. In which she had a mold smell and all the same problems I did. Now while I had an awesome vacation the Hotel might of been the worst part. You can decide for...
Read moreI've been coming to South Padre since I was a child. I've stayed at half the condos or hotels on the island. This hotel is one of the worst.
You should know, most of the hotels here are old. They are near the ocean, so they usually smell salty are also kinda humid inside. That's the case with most places here, which I'm totally okay with, and it's to be expected on an aging resort island.
The Padre South Hotel is gross. I had to think twice about actually eating in the room, because it felt so dirty.
The floors and carpets haven't been cleaned in ages. Most places on the island have tile or laminate floors because of the obvious moisture and sand issues. Which just makes me think this carpet is probably a decade old.
The molding on the walls were swelling from mildew and moisture. The side of the fridge was rusty. Every inch of the kitchen had a slight dirty film to it.
The hotel doesn't directly face the ocean, so what you get is a "partial view", according to their website. What I got was a "full view" of the brown brick wall next door. If I leaned way over the edge of the balcony I could see the small dirty looking yellow colored pool and a sliver of the beach. That is only after two full grown men had to slide the rusted balcony door open, by picking it off the hinges and the sliding it open and then setting it back in the rails.
One of the two full sized beds had the impressions of the countless innocent suckers who stayed here previously too. Almost literal outlines of human bodies in the mattress. It was cartoonish!
Another thing was there was only one power outlet in the room, next to the kitchen. None by the beds at all. So if you need to charge any of your devices, they'll have to stay in the kitchen. Which isn't a huge deal, as the Wi-Fi failed to work anyway.
My favorite moment staying in the room was when I giggled at how the room service nicely folded the end of the toilet paper in an effort to make it seem fancier. Good effort guys.
Also, they make you wear arm bands your entire stay, to show you're staying there. I removed mine immediately, because the staff couldn't have cared less anyway.
This place sucks. There are several other choices on the island much better for the same price and sometimes even cheaper.
All that being said, I love South Padre. It's far and away the best beach you're going to...
