For our family’s first trip to Montauk we chose the Royal Atlantic Beach Resort. Traveling with our two children we were looking for a family friendly hotel on the beach that was also walking distance to the plaza. ||Like any frequent traveler, I read numerous reviews on TripAdvisor and other travel sites before planning a vacation. I try to take each with a grain of salt as everyone has unique experiences when it comes to travel preferences. There are also expectations vs reality when it comes to what you’re paying for. I wanted to share our wonderful experience at the Royal Atlantic with you all. We enjoyed the Royal Atlantic for the location, convenience and great value that it offers.||Below are some highlights (along with some shortcomings) from our recent experience at the Royal Atlantic:||Location: The crown jewel of the Royal Atlantic is its spectacular beachfront location. It’s situated on prime Montauk beachfront between the Montauk Blue Resort and the Surf Club. Aside from being directly on the beach, we loved that the Royal Atlantic is less than a quarter mile (roughly a 5-minute walk) to the Plaza in town. Most days walked into town several times a day. Whether for an iced coffee or a fresh breakfast pastry from the Montauk Bake Shoppe, sandwiches for lunch from Herbs Market, dinner in town and then out for ice cream, the convenience was hard to beat. Because it’s so close to town, restaurants were willing to deliver lunch right to the beach (we used Bounce Beach Montauk as the delivery location).||Beach: The resort is located on beautiful South Edison beach. The beach was very clean and there was a lifeguard on duty (to the right of the Royal Atlantic) until 5pm each day. During our stay the Royal Atlantic did not offer lounge chair service for the beach so we were glad that we brought our own. During peak summer weeks the beach does tend to get crowded so we set up our chairs before breakfast to get a location we wanted. Daily beach chair service would be a welcomed amenity.||Pool: Our kids spent most of the day at the beach but on the warmer days it was nice to dip in the pool for a change of pace. The hotel has two nice outdoor pools. A heated pool staffed with a lifeguard in the center of the property (located in between the hotel and the beach) and a 2nd pool located across the street with some shaded cabanas. Towels for the beach and the pool can be requested at the main office (although they really should be available on the pool deck). The pool deck appears to have been renovated recenty and was well kept and clean during the length of our stay.||Housekeeping: We received daily housekeeping service, and the rooms were left clean and made up nicely. The outdoor hallways were rundown but at no fault of the staff. They were weathered as you would expect from an older beachside hotel. I never noticed trash or old room service left on the floor.| |Room: We stayed in an oceanfront deluxe room. The deluxe rooms felt more like a standard hotel room size and having this extra space was helpful for our family of four. Our room was located on the upper level which gave us an unobstructed view of the ocean. The view was stunning! ||We had a nice-sized balcony with two chairs and a table. We enjoyed our daily morning coffee looking out at the beautiful ocean. If traveling with young children, just keep in mind that the railings don’t appear to be child safe. ||Another great feature of the rooms at the Royal Atlantic are the kitchenettes which were equipped with a large mini-refrigerator, microwave, two burner electric stove and a coffee maker. The hotel also provides pots and pans, utensils, cooking utensils, plates, mugs and drinking glasses. ||If you don't enjoy dining out for every meal or are traveling on a budget, having a kitchen in your room is a great convenience. We even saw some guests by the pool enjoying full lobster feasts that were prepared in their hotel room, so anything is possible even with an efficiency kitchen!||The bathroom is on the smaller side and could use updating as well. It’s really a one-person bathroom but can accommodate two if one is showering and the other is standing at the vanity.||The room décor was exactly as it appeared on the hotel’s website. Yes, it was dated, and could use a facelift but if you’re not looking for or don’t care about a shabby chic room it’s easy to look past.||We spent most of our time enjoying the best of what Montauk had to offer and not sitting around in the room so the size of the room and the décor wasn’t a large concern of ours. That being said, a fresh coat of paint in the rooms and some minor improvements around the property would go a long way in sprucing up the resort. ||Service: Other than checking in at the front desk and ordering breakfast each morning we didn’t have too much interaction with the hotel staff. ||Common areas: Located in the main office right beyond the check-in desk there is a small arcade with a ping-pong table, arcade games, bubble hockey and skee-ball. More than sufficient to pass some time for the little ones or even teenagers looking for a hangout room. ||In the “courtyard” on the pool deck are tables and chairs and a few rows of lounge chairs. There was a great area to set up corn hole and this space could easily be used for an after-dinner hangout.| |In Montauk, D-I-Y bonfires on the beach are a popular evening activity. The hotel doesn’t provide equipment or set-up, so you’ll need to bring your own supplies. The 7/11 in town or local hardware stores sell firewood and a metal bucket or pan which is required.||Security: We always felt safe in the hotel and on the resort property. ||Food & Drink: You have two choices for dining on the property. The Restaurant and Bar which is located in the back of the hotel was open for breakfast from 7:00am-11:30am. We received a voucher for a complimentary breakfast for each person in our room. The vouchers didn’t include gratuity and there was a strange administrative charge of $1 per order regardless of whether we chose room delivery or pickup. We chose not to, but you have the option to dine-in for breakfast as well. ||Tip: Place your orders early as wait times were as long as one-hour when we placed it between 8-830am. ||The other restaurant on the property is the beachside bar and grill. We didn’t eat there and opted for lunch in town or pizza delivery to the beach. If you want something quick and easy though, the option is there.||Final Thoughts||Overall, the Royal Atlantic checked all the boxes for our first family vacation to Montauk. You really can’t beat its location and value. Our kids didn’t want to leave, and we can’t wait to return. It was...

Read moreWe stayed at Royal Atlantic East Condos for a fall trip to Montauk. Here is is the good and the bad. Pros: location , location, location. The condo is right on ocean with magnificent views. The condo is spacious with full kitchen. Great room has modern, comfortable furniture with gas fireplace and large screen tv there are 2 1/2 modern bathrooms. There are 2 large decks overlooking ocean places Now for the cons: this place is in need of some serious maintenace. The paint is peeling in many places. There are shingles missing. The carpeting on the stairs is old and dated. One outlet was falling out of the wall. The tile job in the bathrooms is shoddy and while the bathrooms are modern all the plumbing fixtures are from another era(also kitchen faucet). The bedrooms say 1970 and the mattresses are not too comfortable. The kitchen is poorly stock.. we had big storm while her so we decided to cook in. It was difficult to make a meal.. the handle were coming of the pots. There was only one cover. The pots were terribly scratched and should be replaced. There were hardly any cooking utensils. I had to use a spatula to stir my sauce. When we went to set the table there were no wine glasses. I couldn’t believe it. We had to use water glasses. When we went to office to ask about some maintenance issues the young at the desk could have cared less. When we asked for extra hangers he said. “No”. That’s it. No explanation, nothing just no. My husband said where did they get him? Then there is the cost. Even in October it was expensive over 400 per night. You would think that for that price you would get better service and maintenance. I have been coming to Montauk for years and always wanted to stayed here because of location but frankly I am disappointed. I have stayed in many places in many resort locales and I would say this is near the bottom in terms of the facility. The Royal Atlantic needs to do some serious work here. The final issue is there policy regarding changes in reservation. We had booked with a friend. 29 days before we were due to arrive our friends had a family medical emergency where they had to travel to Arizona and are still there.. we called to see if we could postpone until a later date, even more off season. We were told no changes within 30 days at the condos. We weren’t asking for a refund just a change of date..I have done that before with other places and it has always been accommodated. Even with their competition here at Montauk. We had a nice time here at Montauk as always but I thought it would be very special accommodations and it wasn’t. I guess because of the location they can charge whatever they want and provide poor customer service. Also we had a big storm last night and sliding door to upstairs deck leaked like a sieve. It went through the wall and leaked into bedroom. My husband had to put a garbage can to catch the rain. The seal for the door is shot. Again poor maintenace. By the way this is my...
