We decided to go to Montauk to see the Milky way and light house at night. We chose South Edison because it is listed as one of the top restaurants in Montauk and because it has Gluten free options. First of all we chose entrees that said they were Gluten free. But my hubby got very sick from the hidden Gluten in the food. Secondly we have had seafood all over the country including several islands in Hawaii. It is over priced for what they offer. We also went there because it said they had Halibut. However when we got there it was no longer available and they did not update their menu on their web site until today. Instead I had to have fluke. For 35 dollars it was a tiny piece of fish. We don't mind paying if the food was good but it was all appetizer sized and we had to eat dinner at home when we got home maybe at 3 AM. Fluke is one of the cheapest fish there is and we usually discard it if it is given on a sushi plater. I am allergic to shellfish so the options were extremely limited for me. Seafood is my favorite cuisine but this restaurant was not really a seafood restaurant it is a bar with shellfish happy hour type plates.
Montauk is TRYING hard to be a real destination. But it is lacking in the area of fine dining. It is even lacking in the way of half way decent food. They can fool the transplants that flock out there but can't fool us!
It does not in anyway measure up to Cape May NJ which is a dining destination. Some of the employees were clearly drunk and nobody seemed to care. If getting drunk and having half way decent over priced food this is for you! Now about the pluses. The chef is really good! The sauce with the fish was amazing and I am not a sauce person, It shows how flexible he or she is to work with such cheap fish. Also I went on a truffle fry crawl and kick for a while. I had most of them in Manhattan. I would say these were the best truffle fries I ever had! The shrimp cocktail was done perfectly my hubby said! Also it was not far from the lighthouse and at night you can see the Milkyway! I think it was 6 miles. But it did not have the beachy environment like you find at other ocean destinations like Key West, Cape may NJ, or anywhere else. Had a busy NY City vibe. We are trying to escape the city not be with our neighbors in Montauk which seemed to be mostly Brooklyn transplants from Podunk based on conversations we could not help but over hear because they were all practically screaming.. But something in the food was not gluten free. This restaurant doesn't understand you can get someone very sick which they did get my hubby sick with Gluten. They need to be retrained about cross contamination. People are Gluten free because of illness not because of choice. It's not like being a vegetarian. So if this restaurant was in the city I would still give it 2 stars but as a seafood town wow you guys should known better! I guess the problem is most of the diners do not know better but we...
Read moreThis is my second time at South Edison and both of my experiences there were so good that I had to leave a review. When my husband and I went last November we sat at the bar and Sophia was our bartender, and she was fantastic! She made us so many different and delicious cocktails and it was really a fun dinner experience. This past weekend we went back with friends for my husband's birthday and I asked if they could do a cocktail tasting - they called to confirm our reservation and said that they probably couldn't accommodate that request as it's not something they normally do (which I completely understood) but that they would try and serve a few drinks with a brief description of each. They also said that they couldn't bring a cake with a candle over but would have another kind of dessert. I was fine with that as well.
When we arrived we were seated right away and my husband was wished a happy birthday. They had us try two different cocktails and Sophia came over to explain what was in each. She is excellent at making and creating drinks and seems passionate about it, which makes such a difference! She is definitely an asset to the restaurant with her friendly and fun personality and her knowledge of cocktails. I should also mention of course that the food was delicious; we all loved our meals (the burger is amazing) and we shared the calamari and the burrata, which were both fantastic. They brought us carrot cake for dessert, which another employee explained that she made and it was her recipe, and it was very good. They didn't charge us for that which I thought was really nice and also unexpected. I will keep coming back here whenever I'm in...
