From the moment you step through the doors of Maguro Japanese Market, you know you’re in for something special. Nestled in the heart of Montauk, Yongming has created a space that feels both effortlessly coastal and distinctly Japanese. The warm, minimalist décor—clean lines, light wood accents, and just a hint of ocean breeze—sets the stage for an unforgettable meal. Whether you’re grabbing a quick hand roll to-go or settling in for a leisurely sushi feast, you’re treated like family from hello to arigatō.
But of course, the real star here is the food. Every piece of nigiri—tuna, salmon, yellowtail—melts on your tongue with that perfect balance of slick and tender, the rice seasoned just so. The hand rolls are equally impressive: the Spicy Tuna crackles with a gentle heat, the Salmon Cream Cheese delights with its silky tang, and the Veggie Roll is a testament to how thoughtfully crafted even the simplest ingredients can be. Dive into a Rice Bowl (the Chirashi is a mosaic of fresh sashimi over perfectly vinegared rice), or go big with one of the Bento Boxes—each compartment a miniature masterpiece of tempura, pickles, salad, and sticky rice.
Service here is friendly without feeling overbearing. Yongming and his team move seamlessly between market counter and sushi bar, offering recommendations, sharing stories about where the fish was caught, and always ensuring your glass is full. It’s clear they care deeply about quality at every level—from sourcing the freshest seafood to artfully plating each dish. Maguro Japanese Market isn’t just a meal; it’s a celebration of flavor, craftsmanship, and that unbeatable Montauk spirit. Do yourself a favor: tell your friends, bring your appetite, and prepare to...

I can't say enough good things about this place. I've been twice in ten days, and each visit was absolutely stellar. This is a true sushi counter experience—just four seats, incredibly fresh fish, and serious attention to detail.
The scallop was the highlight for me, both as nigiri and in the spicy scallop roll—fresh, sweet, perfectly textured. The local tuna was also excellent, but honestly, every piece I tried was top-tier.
In a town overrun with burgers and pizza, it's such a win to finally have a place like this. Even better: they’re open late—I think until 1 a.m. As someone who works late, this is huge. My only options used to be 7/11 or greasy takeout, but now I can end the night with fresh fish, miso soup, or even a light salad. Total game-changer.
This is my new go-to spot. Can’t wait...
Read moreUnbelievable quality; the best sushi on the East End: This place blew me away. I'm so incredibly glad it's opened. Every piece was impeccably fresh—we’re talking melt-in-your-mouth toro, perfectly sliced hamachi, and uni that rivaled anything I’ve had in the city. The rice was warm and seasoned just right, clearly made by someone who knows what they’re doing.
We ordered for takeout, and nothing was soggy or out of place by the time we got back to the house. Staff was exceptionally kind and clearly passionate. They walked us through a few specials when we called ahead, and were entirely considerate and accommodating.
Montauk isn’t exactly short on seafood, but if you’re craving sushi done with real precision and care, this is the spot. No frills, just phenomenal fish and quiet excellence....
