Where do I even begin - for spending over $500 /night this has to be one of the most unsafe hotels I have ever stayed in before, and I have stayed in hotels overseas.
First, the rooms were honestly just extremely underwhelming. I understand the "minimalistic approach" but there is a difference between minimal and simply not even providing a trash can in the hotel room, aside from the small bathroom trash can which did not even have a bag in it.
The vanity mirror was literally falling off the wall! (photo attached) this not only is a safety concern, but raises questions about what corners the Moxy cuts when it comes to engineering within their building. The hotel offers a slide in the lobby, which I gladly passed on after seeing the mirrors hanging off the wall by a thread and the drywall anchors falling out.
The bathroom was disgusting. The shower appeared to be dirty from previous guests with grime and build up around the drain. The shower leaked large amounts of water through the door onto the bathroom floor. The toilet had urine all over. It was quite gross. It was clear the area has not actually been cleaned in awhile.
The hallway on level 2 was pouring water from the ceiling. It was running down the walls and soaking the hallway carpet. This is a huge mold concern.
This hotel operates with the illusion of security. The room doors are locked with a digital RFID lock, there are no additional locks within the room. The inside door lock was so lose that it could simply be broken into by forcefully pushing the door into the lock. The screws were hardly in the wall.
The hallway corridors are out of a suspense movie. There are NO CAMERAS with an active field of view within the floor corridors. There is a camera once you walk off the elevator, but once out of the field of view, there is nothing to monitor any other dark areas of each level. The hallways are dark and creepy.
Throughout the entire perimeter of the hotel, NONE OF THE CARD SECURITY READERS WERE OPERATIONAL! They were all for show, as every entrace was accessible without a key card. The elevator key card reader was also unoperational, allowing anyone off the street to come into the building and come up to the rooms.
There is full access throughout the entire building if you are not a paying patron. This presents a very large amount of risk for anyone staying on the property. There is no security at the front entrance, aside from the young teenagers working valet.
At the bar in the lobby, after waiting an hour "for the kitchen to open" I spent $15 on the "chip trio" which unfortunately turned out to be a bowl of tostitos chips, plastic looking cheese, and jar salsa from what was likely bought at the dollar general or supermarket.
Once of the most concerning safety issues was the "comminuty ice chest" that is located in the lobby for all guests to share. This presents a huge health risk, the ice scoop was floating around in a dirty cooler, half melted ice and water sloshing around with hundreds of hands reaching in and touching the ice. There are no actual ice machines on the premises. There is ONE microwave for the entire hotel to share, located in the lobby next to the community ice cooler. This could lead to something like the spread of norovirus or another food borne illness.
The hotel does not utilize support or room staff for servicing items such as towels. They utilize "supply lockers" on each level for the guests to go and get their own replacement towels, or toiletries. Of course, these are 98% empty and had nothing in them. There were no clean linens or towels to even use.
The outside pool was cracked and the foundation was peeling, there were no lights in the pool for once the sun went down leaving the entire pool water dark. The gate connecting the boardwalk to the guest patio was left unlocked and anyone could come and go as they pleased.
This was my experience staying at the Moxy. Do not let the photos of the lobby fool you into thinking this is an upscale hotel. I will never return and will not...
Read moreUpdate: we were contacted via email by the Assistant General Manager after posting this review, who was very respectful in expressing appreciation for my candid review, and noted they hope to learn from this experience and make improvements. I appreciate the follow-up!
Unfortunately had a pretty rough experience staying at the Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront this September. The hotel has only been open for a bit over a year, so maybe it can be chalked up to a lack of hotel experience among the staff.
First, we had no TV remote in our room - a minor problem, but you'd think this would be checked when turning over a room. But after they brought us a remote, the TV still didn't work. Staff then came back and fixed the TV cabling for us. I wouldn't normally mention this in a review, if the troubles had stopped there...
At 3:00am, we're woken up by beeping coming from our smoke detector every 30 seconds. I call the front desk and they ask me to wait while they check things on their end. 30 minutes after not hearing back, I call again and talk to someone else who tells me that the repair folks don't come in until 7:00am so there's nothing they can do. I then request another room to sleep in, hoping this issue will be fixed in the morning and we can return.
Get to our second room around 4:00am only to find that there is no power in the room at all - no lights, no TV, no functional outlets. Which I guess is fine because I'm just there to sleep, but did housekeeping not notice this when they last cleaned the room?
At 9:00am I get a phone call that our first room is not repairable, so we have to move to this new one. I let them know about the power issue, and they send up the repair folks again. After about an hour of them working on the fuses and calling the manufacturer for help, I give up on that room and go to the front desk again to request a third room.
In the third room, we find that the body soap and shampoo bottles in the shower are empty. Again, why isn't this something that housekeeping checks every time they turn over a room? I call down to the front desk, and they assure me that they will have someone come over. 6 hours later, after a full day at the beach, we return to find the bottles still empty. I go downstairs and ask again in-person, and they assure me that someone will come by once they're done cleaning a couple rooms. Seems like poor priorities to me, but sure enough someone does eventually come by shortly afterwards.
I was told that our first night would be comped because of all the drama, but in the end they just waived our pet fee and valet parking, which isn't quite what was promised but I'll take what I can get. I also appreciated that they gave us free breakfast at the attached Belvedere Diner and a couple free drinks at the bar as a way of apologizing for that first rough night.
And now to be fair, here are some pros for this hotel:
Great location right on the boardwalk, walking distance to the pier and some great dining options. Valet parking was convenient and reasonable, and the staff were very friendly. The Belvedere Diner is pretty good, and a very convenient option for breakfast and lunch if you don't want to go far. Pet-friendly, and we didn't notice any issues with noisy dogs during our stay there. The rooms were unimpressive (though I expect a beach hotel to not be too fancy), but the main lobby and bar area were very chic and modern. All staff were very friendly and seemed like they wanted to help, so I think most issues we experienced came down to inexperience and...
Read moreWe came here for a week vacation and to visit our new grandson that lives near by. It was my husband and our 2 shih tzu's in one small room with a beautiful view of Virginia Beach and ocean front. The bed is quite comfortable which I was expecting since it is a Bonvoy hotel. The room service was very almost non existent. They will not clean, change your sheets daily. You need to ask for service if you need it. It seemed clean enough but I expected more from a Bonvoy hotel. In the room, we only had hooks on the walls, a hanging folding chair, one drawer at the base of the bed that was already occupied with the safe and pull down desk and a small mushroom like table on the other side of the bed. The small sink was on the outside of the bathroom on a small open vanity. They also had a small frig sitting on the floor pretty much in the middle of the room. They offer shampoo, conditioner and body wash. There are 2 area's under the bed to store your luggage. There wasn't much storage especially for a week stay. The first few days we had a room on the 7th floor. They eventually moved us since the A/C stopped working and they weren't able to fix it right way. In that room, the shower barely had any water pressure nor hot water. So I was glad they had to move us. They were nice to accommodate us quickly and they also gave us a small credit for the inconvenience. The lobby was very hip and moving. The large slide was neat and the atmosphere was great with live entertainment nightly. The cocktail’s were amazing. Now are they pricey? Pretty average for cocktail’s from $11-$16. I found out on our last today that they offer happy hour everyday from 2-6. The professional nespresso machine doesn't work so don't expect any cappuccinos or espressos. The restaurant was closed and they were telling us that they want to revamp it in the near future. They did offer some snacks and regular coffee in the am. They have a small pool that wasn't that clean. I never saw anyone ever cleaning it. There was clumps of hair and sand in the pool. They lounge chairs could seriously get some cleaning! You check in at the bar which I found interesting and strange. Otherwise, the view was fantastic and like I said before, the atmosphere was great. We met a lot of nice people and the staff were very welcoming. The dogs had a blast and quickly became very popular. The location was great. It was a 10 minute walk to Mahai's restaurant on 7th street. This area had good food, drinks and live music just about every night. Overall we had a great time at the Moxy and we will visit other Moxy's in other states or even other...
