Old Town Palace Guest House — Hotel in Hà Nội

I had booked my accommodation in the month of November through agoda and had done advance payment for the stay at Old Town Guest House for the last week of December for 3 days. When i reached the place first there was a staff who didn't have any idea about the booking and also didn't know english so it was difficult to communicate with her. Then another lady came who knew english and told that she had all her rooms booked and blamed agoda for overbooking her place. Then she offered us another place of stay which was non-comparable to the room we had booked and paid for which we rejected. Then she asked us to cancel our booking so that she could just wash her hands off from the commitment. I was totally shocked by the behavior and non-commitment of the property staff, I told her we were travelling with infants and it was difficult for us to roam around and find another place. But she dint even care for the matter and continued forcing us to cancel the booking. Finally we had to carry our luggage and move out and find another place on ourself. The truth was that while i had booked the place of stay about 3 weeks back the actual date of stay, the place was cheaper but as the demand increased, the stay price shot up and the owner blindly without considering the booking let out the place to another guest. This questions the credibility of the booking site 'Agoda' and the property. I will never recommend this place to anyone unless you would want to pay before hand and end up roaming around helplessly to find an alternate...

This is a very good hotel at 2 star prices with helpful friendly staff who keep the room very clean, and provide a good basic breakfast. Some reviewers seem to expect a 4 star hotel for the low price, which is not possible in Hanoi IMHO. All the other low price hotels I checked had major traffic noise, but this one tucked up a small well lit alleyway has only the birdsong to wake up to 👍. Facilities are basic but have everything needed including a firm comfortable bed. Some facilities could be modernized but they work (not true of all hotels). Laundry is returned the same day and low cost. Good English is spoken by most of the staff, and others understand English quite well, but translation Apps are easy and great! The location is excellent with walking easy to many places in the old quarter, especially shopping 🛍️ restaurants 🍲and coffee shops☕. Grab and Xanh taxis are easy and cheap to anywhere else, eg the Lotte Mall and Aquarium. Hotel Reception also arranged Tours at discounted prices. The street food towards the road is very popular for local prices not tourist prices, with freshly cooked BBQ sausages and many other dishes. Seating is basic. We stayed at the Hotel for two nights which we booked through booking.com. Everything was pretty good at the beginning. The hotel is not easy to find, but if you look for the address in advance it won't be difficult. It was a little weird as the owner asked us to cancel the reservation and promised that they won't charge us any cancelation fee (probably that they don't have to pay the booking.com fee). The rooms are not as clean as on the pictures they show in the internet. Could be a little cleaner (maybe just wipe through that the dead bugs are not on the ground anymore). ||Afterwards we booked another night offline with the owner on-site directly and paid a deposit to reserve the room for the days we were out of town. We came back to Hanoi at around 9pm when she told us there is no free room anymore. Even we paid deposit. Then she brought us to another property of her and told us that she has empty rooms which is normally much more expensive but she won't charge more for us. The other rooms were not even close as good as the main ones. So we didn't take them. We were very pissed as it was already 9.30pm and we didn't have a place to stay. The owner didn't care much and gave us the deposit and left.||Would not recommend to stay there. You'll find much more comfortable places...
