This was one of the few gift shops that was still open when we arrived in Harrison Hot Springs today, so we went in with our kids so they could pick something out for themselves. The older white lady left the counter area to come over to me in the middle of the store and asked me if my umbrella was soaking wet. It wasn't...it barely had rain on it..more like a light misting of rain, but mostly dry. I told her it wasn't really wet and she told me to leave it in the bucket near the door, so I did. A few brief moments later, a white mother-and-son who also had an umbrella of the same dryness were told they could hold on to theirs. Cool. Several times, the lady came over a few feet away from me and craned her neck to see what I was doing with a scowl on her face. At one point, my daughter and I were looking at the stone necklaces to the left of the cash register counter, and the woman overtly twisted her whole body to bend over the counter to see what we were doing. As the only woman of colour in the store, it felt like I was being singled out for special scrutiny. She didn't once ask if I needed help, but just kept coming over to watch me. Even after we left the store, my wife was putting coins into the coin bending machine out on the sidewalk while I undid the packaging on my daughter's necklace we purchased, and the woman came into the doorway to look at us on the sidewalk to see what I was doing. Then promptly turned back inside in silence. While we were still in the store, I very much wanted to go over to my wife and tell her we should leave, but our kids had already picked out their gifts, and i didn't want to cause a meltdown by telling them to put their items back on the shelves. 10/10 shopping for white people, but if you're a person of colour, I...
Read moreSo disappointed in my experience at Sasquatch Gifts today. Went into the store with full intention to buy a couple hoodies or sweatshirts but the older lady at the cashiers desk was incredibly rude. First she snapped at us when I kindly asked if dogs were allowed in the store..(they’re not which was totally fine), husband waited outside with the dog. I was looking around for shirts and found one he might like and went towards the door making it obvious I was looking for him to show him. He wasn’t nearby but the lady watched me with this scowl on her face like I was gonna steal it. Then I went to take a photo of the shirt to send my husband to see if he would like it and she loudly yelled at me “ma’am you’re not allowed to take photos in here”. I couldn’t believe it! I told her I wouldnt be spending a dime in her store and left. I easily could have spent over $200 on shirts and souvenirs but forget it, not after that. I read someone else had a negative experience and that maybe “white people” would have a better shopping experience (which is very sad)…but nope…not the case. At least she’s rude to people of all races 🤷♀️ I’ve added my ‘illegal’ photo for...
Read moreI very occasionally write reviews but this one just shocked me. My partner bought a tshirt and ended up with the wrong size. They let him exchange but thought it was fair to charge an extra $2 for an XL. Us “city folks” are (sadly) used to higher prices but damn, this was surprising. The cashier said it’s probably because of extra fabric; we weren’t mad at the cashier at all, we realize this is a manager decision. I’ve heard of this for extended sizes but XL is common. Please reconsider your souvenir shopping due to these retail pricing practices. Take a photo,...
