We had lunch at 12:30 PM on a Friday afternoon at Black Forest Steak & Schnitzel. The restaurant sits almost on top of the point where the Harrison river meets Harrison lake, right in front of the Harrison Lagoon. Sadly you can't see the water from the restaurant because of the elevation and barrier wall surrounding the water, but you can see the mountains and it is a lovely spot. Be WARNED there's a "gotch ya!" paid parking across from the restaurant. When we parked there was no sign anywhere stating you need to pay to park. No visible meter. In fact when we walked from our car to the stairs leading to the water there were no signs stating you needed to park or a meter. Sadly we got at $50 CAD parking ticket. The video attached shows our POV from the car. The restaurant is adorable and goes all in on the German Black forest vibe with heavy woodwork adorned with carvings and murals on the walls. The restaurant is a decent size inside and has about the same amount of seating outside. There's an uncovered outdoor seating area with umbrella covered tables, as well as a covered/heated outdoor seating area. This is where we sat as it was raining and windy on the day of our visit. Service was immediate. We never left waiting for anything. If they were watching over us it wasn't obvious, but they were definitely right there if we looked around. They have an excellent wine and beer menu and the food menu was extensive. We both had schnitzel I had schnitzel with pork sausage. The dishes were hugely portioned and came with veggies that consisted of exactly two small blanched carrots, one small broccoli floret and one small cauliflower floret. They veggies were not over-cooked and still had some snap to them and were NOT drowning in oil or butter. They were exactly what I wanted. Some might find it too plain, but I was happy to see vegetable that were not removed of all their health benefits. The potatoes were flavorful and I devoured them all. The sausage that came with Schnitzel was said to be made in house. It was .... just ok... I was happy that it wasn't overly salty like you often have with sausage, but something wasn't quite right. I had tea to hot drink and was so happy to see they serve Stash Tea Company brand tea. I had a whole small tea kettle to myself. We were too full to try any desserts but there was a very large selection. We would go here again.

The Black Forest Steak & Schnitzel House is a lovely fine-dining German restaurant at the Harrison Hot Springs, a village located along the shoreline of Harrison Lake in the Fraser Valley in British Columbia. They offer delicious authentic German cuisine, steaks and schnitzels are their specialties. For a starter, we got the Caesar Salad with in-house dressing, the Black Forest Salad with herb vinaigrette dressing and their seller Goulash Soup. Our entrees are the popular Pork Hock “Bavarian” Style, a sure winner and the Bratwurst and Sauerkraut which is very good. The sausage is well complemented by the pan-fried potatoes, red cabbage and sauerkraut. Also, the schnitzel burger and chicken cordon bleu burger are great for light eaters. Our lunch will not be complete without the draft beer (German Pilsner). The menu is well-priced having extensive choices of appetizing European cuisines. It’s interesting they offer choices for vegetarian too. Food is served on time. Service was great as the friendly staff frequently attended to our dining needs. The dining room has a rustic design with an elegant European touch of art. There is also a patio dining area overlooking the lake with a stunning view. The hand painted murals on the walls was gorgeous. This place is pretty busy during Spring and Summer so make sure you have a reservation. I will definitely drive for 2 hours to enjoy their delectable food, amazing service and great ambiance. I highly recommend the Black Forest Steak & Schnitzel House. It's the best dining place at Harrison Hot Springs.

First, try Black Forest if you are a European style food eater. In fact, its a German restaurant with options of steak and Schnitzel (mostly pork-based). The location of the restaurant is unbelievably unique opposite the picturesque Harrison Lake. To be honest, in this small coast line, whatever you eat is delicious, pretty straightforward. If you go there is summer, to take the most experience out of it, be there after 7, so weather cools off a little and reserve for the big balcony overlooking the lake. In this case, everything is good, regardless. Inside the restaurant is well decorated with paintings on the wall that take you to Europe for some time with its red sofa to sit. 🍗 🍖 All the Schnitzel are pork-based and you can replace it with chicken. Each dish is garnished normally and you don’t see something especial. The Schnitzels are generally dry and you have to try the fish sides at the same time for eating easier. Don’t try the Vegetarian Schnitzel! No taste and character. 🥗 The onion soup was good and the Caesar salad was average. The waiting time is more than normal which is at least 45 minutes. Its super crowded and leave at least 2-hour window for this restaurant. Some servers are nice and some don’t seem to be happy seeing you as a customer. IMO, its not worth what you get, yet its worth trying once as inside is really nice and the view of second floor balcony is like no other. Enjoy! But, just once.👌

Nice restaurant in terms of German ambiance. Last summer, a couple of times when my family and I were visiting Harrison, we ordered take-out burgers and we absolutely enjoyed the burger. A couple of weeks ago I was at Harrison for a birthday celebration, and we dined in. We all ordered pepper steak from their boiler menu. To be honest for a $42.00 plate of steak, our dish was disappointing. The steak was tough and the veggies, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower, were placed on the plate in big chunks. On the menu they call the veggies “fresh garden vegetables”. However, when I tasted the vegetables, they tasted like the veggies were dipped in hot water and salt and then placed on the plate. The vegetables were neither chopped nor placed as salad or as sautéed vegetables. I don’t know if serving fresh garden vegetables like that is traditional to German food, though I’ve had German food many times before and the veggies were chopped in smaller pieces and they’ve been either deliciously sautéed or presented raw like a proper salad to go with the food. The pan-fried potatoes also weren’t anything that you’d take a bite and enjoy the taste of them. Additionally our server wasn’t that welcoming. I’m not sure if it was because they were busy, though it feels nice when you go to a restaurant and you feel welcomed. Overall, the quality of food didn’t match the price at all.

Wasted SO much time because of them. It says on Google opens at 11 am, went there at 11 am; on the takeout menu in front of the restaurant it says opens at 12pm, but on the wall it says opens at 4 pm. Arrived at 11 am, they were closed, so waited in the car in the rain for an hour, you see waiters inside through the window just cleaning and stuff, they see you but will just stare at you and wont come out to assist you. Waited some more thinking maybe theyre running late but after waiting in the cold and in the rain for so long, had to turn back to find another restaurant with the whole family. TERRIBLE INFORMATION, THIS IS TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Had heard good things so came all the way out here from the island, but all we got back in return is wasted time and stares from waiters on the inside. You dont have 30 seconds to come out and explain when the restaurant is going to open? We put in HOURS to come here with a car full of people. SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT. Will make sure never to come here again in the future. RUINED OUR MORNING AND OUR VACATION 😡😡

I want to be very honest and fair in this review as I would love a small business like this to do well in a little town. Positives - very cozy and great interior decor. It's very clean inside and the food has good portions, plus comes very quickly from the kitchen. I also want to give credit in that we had no reservations and managed to be seated immediately on a busy Sunday night. Staff and service were polite and attentive. Negatives - the French fries that came with my schnitzel burger were WAY overcooked. I was thinking that the burger king meal we had earlier had better fries. Also the black forest cake was a HUGE disappointment. It was like whoever made it didn't put the right ingredients in that are responsible for the flavor. The cake had the right consistency and texture.. but wasn't tart, sweet or savory. I think someone forgot the cocoa powder and sugar when they were mixing the ingredients. The other half agreed to this as well. We'll eventually give this place another chance.
