What a fantastic place! My wife and I had been shopping for rugs for a few days in both Cappadocia and Istanbul before we stumbled upon Ruth’s shop and met Osman- a super kind and patient man who showed us dozens of rugs. We quickly found our favorite but wanted to compare to other shops in town before committing. Osman never pressured us and offered to repair a small “blemish” on the rug regardless (it is 60-70 years old). We discussed options over lunch but kept thinking back to the rug and our experience in Ruth’s shop, which was unlike any other we’d been to. There was no sense that we were being told any lies and there was so much transparency with the product. When we returned, Ruth was there and told us lovely stories about our new prized rug as well as many more. She is a wealth of knowledge and thoroughly enjoys sharing about the past of these special rugs- many are from dowries or used for various purposes by the local people. Each rug she pulled out had a more interesting tid bit or detail that was so unique and we just fell in love with both the rugs and Ruth. In total- we ended up walking away with 5 rugs- some small, but will be talking points in our home for decades to come. We cannot wait to look at these daily, recall the memories of our trip and the stories we learned of the rugs’ past. A huge thank you to Ruth for her time and generosity in sharing so much (we spent hours and left feeling like friends) and to Osman for his patience and skillful workmanship in ensuring our new rugs will last for many years to come. If you are in the market for a rug- big or small, this is the shop for you. There’s no haggling or pressure, something I doubt you’ll find much of in Türkiye. We would gladly give this shop more than 5 stars...
Read moreMy husband and I came to Turkey hoping to buy a carpet for our house and visited several shops before we found Ruth’s amazing shop. Her store attendant Osman was so helpful in showing us some pieces in the sizes we were looking for. When we returned he had already expertly repaired the vintage Kilim we had our eye on and the owner of the shop, Ruth was there to tell us the origin of the carpet and likely story behind the maker. We ended up falling in love with several more carpets and ended up taking home a few more from different regions, all with their own unique story. Ruth is clearly passionate about carpets and is a wealth of knowledge. We ended up leaving with a much greater understanding of the trade than we arrived with. I felt like I was in a friend’s home trading stories the whole time I was in the shop and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. The shop does not barter but offers fair prices for invaluable pieces of history. Ruth’s passion is truly infectious and we are returning home with a beautiful memory of our time in Turkey and desire to learn more about the history and current state of carpet making in Turkey and the...
Read moreWe went to Ruth’s carpet shop on recommendation from my mum who went to see Ruth over twenty years ago for two carpets (which are both still going strong!)
The shop is beautiful with a broad range of carpets to suit every price range and preference. Ruth is incredibly knowledgeable about carpets, and she is very helpful in explaining the origins of the carpets and the history around them. She was never pushy at all, completely different to the treatment in a lot of other shops, and I never felt like there was any pressure to buy.
I ended up falling in love with and buying a gorgeous carpet which I can’t wait to see in my home- a photo is included here! I am so happy with my purchase, and Ruth made it a very pleasant one, including helping with the shipping for the carpet back home to Australia. Would recommend a trip to tribal collections for anyone...
