KA-CHUNK!! Records — Local services in Annapolis

My wife is a huge vinyl collector and looked forward to checking out this shop. We visit hundreds of record stores a year while traveling.

This has to be the first store we’ve walked into where it’s dark, extremely small and almost claustrophobic. The owner sees us entering and is sitting at a stool behind the checkout - what stood out to us was how we said hello to the owner, locked eyes with him, and he never acknowledged us or our kindness. He just returned a monotone look with zero response, that felt very unwelcoming to his shop- and it was difficult finding anything relatable to purchase. We couldn’t find basics like Elvis, or Hip Hop / Rap vinyls. Everything was smorgasborded together in a small crammed “shop” and the owner didn’t make us feel welcomed whatsoever. If you’re going to have a conversation with one of your buddies, then you should do that after hours. Not when customers are trying to look around and speak with you.

My wife wanted to ask the owner where a specific item was, but he blew off our “hello’s” and then ignored her and continued his conversation with a random guy while she stood patiently waiting for a few minutes, trying to regain his attention to ask where a vinyl was. We ended up leaving, nothing in hand and disappointed. You should have paused the personal conversation and turned to a person obviously waiting patiently, not have them wait even longer for zero reason.

Living in an area with Mecca record shops such as Record Archive, The HoG, etc. in upstate NY, this shop needs a reality check that they aren’t anything compared to the real legends of vinyl shops, and maybe treating people decently when they say hello to you sets the whole vibe of their experience.

Wonderful local record store in Annapolis. It was full of locals. Always full of people, because the shop is stacked with good records and the staff is friendly. Lots of new albums, lots of used albums, lots of selection. New pop albums like Taylor Swift...check. Indie label goodies…yup. Reissues of your favorite stuff from 1990's high school...you know it. Rare pressings of masterings of unreleased Steve Albini mixes that sound super weird and cool and you didn’t even know existed...uh huh.

Good tunes bleeding out onto the street as you walk in. The owner Matt is very helpful and knowledgeable with our being too much or a gatekeeper. Everyone is cool enough to shop here. Great for someone just getting started, someone getting back into it, or anyone really. They keep a good stock of record players and starter speakers as well.

Glad I found this place. Being a new local, it’s awesome to be able to support a local small business that earns the support and good reviews through hard work and doing...

I always find an amazing selection at Ka-Chunk. New, used, old, classic - they have it all! The staff is always friendly and helpful. They’re willing to make special orders of available on their catalog, so be sure to ask if you’re looking for something specific. Prices are reasonable and compare closely with online marketplaces. Parking out front is metered during the week and free on the weekend. They’re situated on a one way street so I advise parking a couple blocks over and walking. It’s just a few short steps away from the Maryland State Capital building. Also, it’s the only record store in old downtown Annapolis, so you must visit if you’re a vinyl enthusiast.
