I love Heart and Hands. Every time I go into the shop my senses are are awakened by all the beauty, texture and color. I see something new every time. The one of a kind handmade garments and jewelry are stunning and creative. The real reason I love the store is because of my own personal transformation that happened there. Typically I don't enjoy shopping for clothes, being a voluptuous plus size woman all of my life has made shopping for clothes challenging and sometimes a traumatizing affair. I was a bit tentative walking into Heart and Hands, assuming I'd look at jewelry and thinking the clothes were too pretty to have anything in my size. Elise, the owner, was very friendly and enthusiastic, she began showing me things to try on and explore. I wasn't used to this type of attention and felt very hesitant at first. She'd bring me something and I'd say, " No, I don't like that..." and she'd show me something else. I noticed how well she handled my resistance and being told " No", never once reacted negatively to my declines, staying positive and upbeat no matter how picky I was being. I finally decided to try something on, and it fit! Then I was starting to have fun! Elise brought me all kinds of beautiful dresses to try, gorgeous hand painted silk, washable velvet, wraps, jewelry, I'd Never had an experience like this! For the first time Ever, during a shopping experience, I felt like a Queen, and I loved it! This experience changed the way I felt about myself and what was possible for me. Needless to say, I have started quite a collection of stunning pieces from Heart and Hands, which I love and wear every day. Elise has an amazing capacity to lovingly meet a person where they are at, and at the same time push the edges of what is possible. Heart and Hands played an instrumental role in the proposal to my fiancee. In June, my girlfriend, Trina, and I visited Ashland to find a dress she could wear to my sister’s wedding. We visited Heart and Hands because the staff had been so kind and helpful to us last year when we were forced to evacuate our home in Redding, CA due to the Carr Fire. On this most recent visit, we met the owner, Elise Peters, who was just as helpful. Elise suggested wonderful accessories that masterfully accentuated the stunning dresses on offer. In the end, my girlfriend was won over by the torrent of unsolicited praise from another customer who preferred Trina in a majestic, silky teal dress. However, I couldn’t help but notice how deadly gorgeous Trina looked in this other silky white dress with a white, silk wrap. I would need to return for a secret purchase.

From grad school to new jobs to world travel to evacuating the Carr Fire, Trina and I have shared a lot, and there’s no one else I would rather spend the rest of my life with, so I made up my mind. I was finally going to propose. For the picture-perfect proposal, I needed Trina to be wearing the picture-perfect dress, so I called Elise at Heart & Hands in August to see if the dress and shawl Trina had tried on in June were still available. Not only were the dress and shawl available, but Elise agreed to send them to me, so I didn’t have to drive up to Ashland.

When the big day came, Trina received the gift toward the end of a day-long scavenger hunt I had crafted for her. She put on the outfit before she was picked up in an old MG and brought to the Sundial Bridge in Redding. This is where I proposed. She loves the dress and she loves the wrap! Oh, and she said YES!

It is such a joy to shop at this store! The fabrics are so lovely and are all natural fabrics, but what makes this store even better is the help you receive. They suggest what would look good with the outfit, how you can change it a bit to make it look different, plus are so helpful with suggesting other things that would look good on you. They always seem to be spot on too. You’ll leave the store feeling you look your best, and won’t look like anyone else, since so many of the items are custom designed by the owner who has a wonderful sense of style. She will show you how to dress something up, but also how to dress it down as well so you get the most use out of your new clothes. Last time I was here, they helped another woman find the perfect dress for a wedding. She left feeling grateful and excited that she will look her best.
