When you make the world's most beautiful cameras, you've gotta hire the best. I was blown away by the attention and care I received from the gentleman who helped me. Immediately upon walking in he pulled out an M model (worth over $6000) for me to hold and try. They don't just keep them behind the glass!
He's a versatile photographer and familiar with every aspect of the field - from smartphones to SLRs to, of course, the stunning Leica series. He talked objectively with me, acknowledging the scenarios where he used each without pressuring me or pushing a certain worldview. It was more respectful than what pretty much any salesperson does, and makes me want to buy a Leica much more.
The guy I talked with also appreciates the potential of photographs, and the cameras that capture them, as art. He talked about what makes Leica so different, noting the care and attention by which they craft their cameras in Germany.
We talked at length about the flaws of the modern smartphone approach to photography (take a bunch of photos with no thought to composition or exposure and hope one sticks) and how Leica is different. I came in believing in the importance of artful, intentional photography, and talking with him confirmed this view. A Leica is an art piece you use to capture art. For one, he mentioned the exquisite dynamic range of their monochromatic model. It's also striking the amount of manual effort involved in composing a photo on Leica. The photographer needs to understand the fundamentals and be intentional about how they shoot. It's a craft that rewards patience over expedience; mastery over convenience. Rather than take dozens of careless shots a Leica owner should choose exactly how they want to capture a subject.
Another (among many) things that's striking about Leica is the understated nature of the brand. There's a simple, bold red wordmark that stands on its own without gimmicks or flashy signs. They don't advertise widely, because they don't need to. If you want a Leica you will find them. The guy who helped me even talked about how they debranded the camera I was using. That is, they removed the Leica logo from the front. What company does that? He told me it was a response to street photographers who want to be inconspicuous and keep their camera safe, but I think there's another, more important reason: real sophistication doesn't scream out. Real sophistication is understated. Most people won't immediately recognize it. It's the few with an eye for these things who will notice and appreciate it.
I thanked for his time and left, all without a sales pitch or guilt trip. He offered to chat again when I come back - and it felt genuine. In a business as delicate as this the personalized approach is essential.

Read moreI randomly moved to Seattle in 2015 and later moved to Bellevue and luckily (or unluckily...just kidding) learned I lived right by the Leica Bellevue Shop. I started film shooting around the same time I started going to the store and the team has always been so welcoming for a newbie like me. Over the years I have purchased a couple vintage Leica film cameras at extremely reasonable prices considering the conditions of them. I have actually visited a ton of Leica stores around the world and this one and Leica MAP Shinjuku are definitely my favorites (Miami a close 3rd). It's not because of the cool luxury camera selections but honestly because of the kindness and genuineness that the shop team members have always showed to me for 5+ years. They are people who you are very surprisingly down to earth without sounding super canned, nor sales-like and return all the good energy you send to them. This is quite a rarity in my experiences in 2022, and I always feel inspired to write about this because this should be celebrated.
I've been collecting vintage Leica for years and I have never felt that buying a "new" lens was ever worth the plunge before this. For years I have wanted to purchase something new to support the shop and I finally ended up purchasing the Leica 35mm Summilux Steel Rim Reissue.
The uniqueness and render of the lens alone was not enough for me to buy it as I'm still a vintage leicamann fanboy, but I can confidently say the reason I purchased the lens is because of the sum of awesome and welcoming experiences I have had at Leica Store Bellevue. My first and only brand new lens I have ever bought from Leica in October 2022. Additionally, if it was not for Stephon's amazing kindness both at the shop AND outside of the shop, this purchase would also have never happened. He was able to get me on a pre-order wait list without hesitation and is the awesome type of dude who celebrates the excitement of the chase of getting new gear with you more than he cares about selling for the sake of selling. Even after the purchase, he sent me such a personal thank you letter that reminded me how people make all the difference for me, and remind me of the type of mom & pop shops I used to go to growing up in South Carolina (except in WA they are way more tech savvy haha).
I actually ended up loving the experience and lens so much I even wrote a review on the lens more in depth on my blog.
To end I want to give the biggest, loving kindness spreading shoutout to all the other Leica Store Bellevue both past and present members: Mack Tha Knife, Brandon, Zachary, and everyone else i missed (who are also friends too duh) at Leica Store Bellevue.
ps congrats on the new location!

Read moreI recently purchased a number of different cameras from the Leica Store in Bellevue Square and am extremely satisfied with them and with the service I received. Leica products are exceptional, with top tier manufacturing quality and superlative optical performance. Coming from Nikon, I had very high expectations which have been met and surpassed. As one colleague at work commented using cars as a metaphor, "Canon and Nikon are Mercedes while Leica is a Bentley."
The staff at Leica Store Bellevue are outstanding, to the extent that in about three months I purchased four different Leica cameras and three Leica lenses along with numerous accessories. Yeah, I kinda went Leica crazy in 2017... :-) The staff took the time to educate me about the brand and about specific Leica products, providing their personal experiences with those products as well. There was never a hard sell or pressure from anyone I spoke to; they just listened to me describing my photography goals and tried to offer advice on how to meet those goals. They allowed me to handle the equipment and were always good about answering my questions. Nathan, Ilya, Dominic, Steve, Chrissie, Lucas, and Brandon are all great ambassadors for the brand. I worked with Nathan the most and he was so helpful and informative that I ended up buying the M Monochrom, a black and white only camera (and Nathan's favorite Leica model). His great enthusiasm for the Monochrom clinched the deal for me, particularly after he showed me pictures from a trip to Iceland he took with the Monochrom. I had originally thought: "Who buys a black and white only camera?" But after discussing it at length with Nathan, I pulled the trigger and bought one. And I have no regrets and am very happy with my decision.
My recommendation, if you're considering Leica, is to buy from Leica Store Bellevue. You won't find better service...
