I’ve been a loyal shopper at Madewell for years, but over time, my experience, especially at the Perimeter Mall location, has become increasingly uncomfortable and disheartening.
As a person of color, I’ve noticed a pattern of dismissive and, frankly, discriminatory behavior when interacting with certain staff members, particularly white employees. On my most recent visit on 7/27/2025, I was accompanied by my daughters and encountered yet another disappointing situation.
While waiting for a fitting room, a white employee assisted other customers by asking for their names, yet when it came to me, she simply wrote a number next to my items without any acknowledgment. After trying on the clothes, she didn’t ask if I needed help with sizing or if I liked any of the items she just walked off and continued helping other customers.
Later, my daughter was ready to check out with a few items, but the associate at the register walked away without saying anything. We waited for about five minutes. Then, another customer bypassed us, and the same employee from the fitting room quickly assisted that person, despite making eye contact with us before looking away. At that point, we returned our items and left the store.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. We've experienced similar treatment multiple times, typically from white employees. We’ve been met with eye rolls when asking for assistance, loud sighs when requesting sizes, and side-eyes upon entering the store. In contrast, when helped by employees of color, our experiences have always been welcoming and positive.
It’s 2025. It should not be too much to expect equal treatment and respectful service regardless of the customer’s race. I urge Madewell to address this issue seriously and ensure your staff is trained to treat all customers with dignity and...
Read moreWhen it comes to client service this shop is first rate! It's a chain store with a boutique feel and you will be made to feel like a celebrity in that way that each SA approaches you and attends to your shopping needs in the most sincerest way possible. If I could get all of my wardrobe pieces here, I really would! The associates are very familiar with their brand (rare nowadays) and have iPad at their disposable to find an item that you may not see on the floor. Part of the experience that I really like is that SA's make sure you have a fitting room, any & all sizes you may need, provide honest fit feedback and check on you. The wardrobe quality is also excellent and I think they hem for free! Strangely enough it's part of the JCrew brand and I say that because I've never had the same experience at the mothership. Other store perks are the good sales and student/educator discount. Really hope this brand continues to deliver the same excellence...
Read moreUpdate: I reached out to the managers via an email to corporate, and got a gracious email response from the manager (Cara, I believe) at the Alpharetta location. I came in to the Alpharetta location to exchange, and was shocked at how much better their customer service was. I really appreciated how gracious they were.
Came in and spent over $200. Was told I could bring in a pair of jeans to receive a $20 rebate within "a couple of weeks." Called to find out if they would honor it, and manager Kelly was very rude and said it was "7 days, no exceptions." Not coming here again.
They will wine and dine you to get your money, and then treat you like trash if you want a refund or rebate. Not...
