I'll level with you. The place is cluttered and appears (with careful observation) to be semi-organized in a way only Jim (the owner) seems to know where things are. If you're a big 6'3 guy like me, you'll worry about knocking things over.
If you need some weird electronic contraption you'd only order online, this guy probably has it right there. This is my second time in his store as I live out of region and the first time I went a year ago, he had an obscure portable digital shortwave radio I was looking for. On a lark, I went back in today to ask about an external shortwave antenna and had a handful to choose from which is weird for any brick and mortar store to have. Has a great selection of portable Bluetooth speakers which he let me try out before buying.
If you're an electronics enthusiast and need that weird odd or end, a car stereo, or just a Bluetooth speaker, Jim appears to be very knowledgeable and his prices are fair. Yes, it looks like an episode of Hoarders in there and expect digging to happen to find anything, so for that I dinged it a star because I always felt like I was going to knock something over.
If you're looking for Best Buy level super smiley customer service, go elsewhere. You'll be dissatisfied here. If you can take a hoard and less than average people skills in exchange for knowledgeable service,...
Read moreFirst try. Looking for old camera and lenses. The guy just had a bad attitude, made you feel like you are thief, always watching you while you browse through his stuff. Even gave me a remark "hey, those are not camera you're touching! You said you will look for cameras!" Ok, felt unwelcomed and left. Second try, next time around, said ok, let's give him another chance. Didn't even get a chance to check anything. He kept asking what were my interests. I said "Anything old cameras!". He replied "No, what do you want, be specific!" I said, mate, anything old cameras, you are a thrift shop so I will browse for old cameras. No, he kept insisting that I tell him what I want. Keep in mind inside is a total mess, stuff thrown everywhere so how the heck I can tell him what I want when I just want to browse and see what I might encounter. No, he wanted to know specifically and wouldn't let me search his store otherwise. Totally don't recommend this guys, he is a salty old man! He even mentioned to go down the street to the next...
Read moreA little cluttered, but after loosing Juneau Electronics I'm glad Hy-Tech downtown is still in business downtown. I'm not sure why others have had the experience they say they have, been going to this store off and on for years and the owner has always been helpful and often has EXACTLY what we need; no matter how obscure the plug in, converter, or piece is. One time he even helped split and label the wires for us and showed us how to hook up a 12volt wall plug in to to somthing that was originally made to be directly plugged into a car! Extremely kind with helping us on that! It's one of those places that in some ways has a little old town Juneau charm to it a bit - place is messy but owner seems to somehow know where everything is and has always been fair with us. Just in some ways it's a junk store, which makes it a great treasure trove - be patient, ask questions, and enjoy digging! Again, I think he's one of the last places in Juneau you'll be able to find obscure electronics to a random assortment of...
