First, let me say the complex itself is lovely. We’ve stayed here yearly for 25 years, and until the 2018-2019 season, we could count the number of negative experiences on one hand. The complex is nicely landscaped, the pools are nice, and the people, both the residents and vacationers, are friendly and respectful. The management has resolved any issues we had swiftly, and while the units themselves vary widely (some newly renovated and fancy, others fairly basic) we have always enjoyed our 6-7 weeks every year at Hale Kamaole. This year was a bit of a surprise. The unit we’ve been reserving for quite a few years is no longer in the rental pool. We were notified a year in advance, but even with that advance notice, we had to scramble to find a unit available for our dates. (Christmas to February, a very popular time at HK) The only units available were 3 owned by the same person, that are priced higher than most in the Co-op rental pool, and presented by the owner as “Premium.” At first glance, the unit looks very nice, but...On arrival to unit #174, we found the unit not to be thoroughly cleaned, and in the case of the toilet and under the bed, filthy. We are here for an extended period, so we simply cleaned what we could. Two days later we found the dishwasher was broken. Management responded immediately, but it took two days to fix it. The hide a bed couch was broken, and miserable to sit on. The toilet was not properly set, rupturing the wax ring causing a leak at the base. It was lifted and reset by maintenance when we notified them. Two of the 3 beach chairs were broken, so we bought our own. The ceiling fan/ light combo in the living room is remote controlled, and turns on and off multiple times a day by itself. Perhaps someone else has the same remote? There are chairs on the lanai, but no dining table, so unless you like to eat from your lap, you can’t have a meal outside, which is a shame. Two weeks in to our 6 week stay, we were notified that they would be installing a new washer dryer ( the existing units were still in working order). I’m not sure why the owner feels it’s okay to do that while the unit is occupied, but we had no say. All together, the installation took nearly an entire day, and due to the location of the washer, it left us unable to access the bathroom or bedroom for 5 hours. Fortunately, there is a bathroom at the pool we could use. The garbage disposal exploded during dinner prep one evening ( we own a garbage disposal, so it was not a result of misuse) Nathan, the complex manager, was, again, very helpful getting that situation resolved. The other big drawback we noticed was that the owner has installed a split air conditioning unit in the lanai closet. While it’s nice because it’s quiet, the heat generated is exhausted onto the lanai, so you can’t sit comfortably out there if the ac is on. Oh, and the funniest thing is that the guestbook in the unit has multiple reviews...many in the SAME HANDWRITING, clearly written by the owners. ( one even signed with their names) Despite being on the island during our stay, the owner never once reached out to us, even after all the problems we reported. Clean always trumps decoration, and keeping things clean and in working order requires a bit of effort on the part of the owner. Overall, the location of unit #174 is fine, the view is great, but after over 2 years of hard use In a rental pool, it’s can no longer be...
Read moreWe booked a 10 day stay from July 21-30, 2025 in Unit 265. I’d like to start off by saying my family has stayed here a handful of times in various units over the last 20 years and each time has been a great stay. Unfortunately, this stay was a very different experience. On July 21st, we walked into Unit 265 and found a condo that was unkept, dirty, and in need of attention. There was a thick layer of dust on various items including the bedroom and living room lamps, shelves throughout, and decorative pieces in all the rooms. The fan in the living room wouldn’t turn on the first night, and the light was stuck on. If you’ve stayed in Maui in July without A/C, you know how important air flow is and how hot a light can make the room. Our kids had to sleep in our bed, despite there being a loft, because the twin mattresses in the loft beds had yellow stains and due to the light remaining on in the living room, the couch was not an option either. In addition to a living room inconvenience, the shower upstairs wouldn’t turn on. The tub part worked, but the shower didn’t have water coming from the top. I would have given the kids a bath, but the bathtub was too dirty. The closet upstairs was unusable because it was used for storage of a broken mirror, additional lamps, and dusty bedding. The walls themselves were dirty and in addition to the uncleanliness, there were ants all over, including in the beds. We contacted the office upon our arrival on July 21 about the overall cleanliness and the ant situation but since check-in is at 4pm and the office closes at 5pm, they said they ran out of ant traps, and they would discuss it with the property manager the next day and would contact us. On July 22 after many phone calls back and forth, they finally offered for the cleaning crew to come the next day (July 23), to address our areas of concern and replace the loft twin mattresses. The cleaning fee and first night was also refunded. We would have preferred to switch units, but they said that wasn’t possible. The cleaning job helped, but was still sub-par. The ants didn’t go away, and we had to deal with them the whole trip. We had to keep all food items bagged, and in the fridge. The ants in the bathroom were absolutely disgusting since they were crawling on my toothbrush. Unit 265 is unclean, outdated, and seems like the owner and property management doesn’t keep up with repairs or renovations the condo desperately needs. Management said they did a walkthrough the morning before we arrived, so either they didn’t, or they just don’t care about cleanliness because the issues we experienced were obvious and clearly ignored if they weren’t seen. I’m sad to say, but I won’t be returning or recommending the Hale Kamaole to friends and family. I’ll be staying elsewhere. Pictures are...

Title: Unit -177 Needs Serious Attention – Not Worth the Price
Unfortunately, our stay at this property was disappointing and did not meet even basic expectations.
The beach accessories provided were all broken or damaged beyond use—nothing was in functional condition. Beach towels were stained and threadbare, which made it feel like cleanliness and guest comfort were not a priority.
Inside, there were no bath mats in the bathrooms and no tea towels in the kitchen, which made things inconvenient and uncomfortable. The kitchen itself was not well-maintained—cutting boards were extremely dirty and felt unsanitary to use. Minimal utensils. Knives that have seen much better days, some have large chunks missing from them. Also two rolls of toilet paper for three guest for one week is not enough.
The most concerning issue was the bed. The pull out mattress and protector had visible yellow stains, which was not only off-putting but also raised serious hygiene concerns. The first set of sheets we found folded in the closet appeared to be stained and not washed. We did find a new set of sheets that we washed and used instead. The pillow shams in the primary bedroom also appeared dirty so we washed them as well. Instructions for using the tv could use a refresh as it was not very clear and took us awhile to navigate.
The unit is right next to the busy road so you do hear all the loud motorcycles and trucks. The A/C is only in the bedroom and only keeps the bedroom cool. By the end of our one week stay it was flashing a message that the filter needed to be replaced.
This property has potential, but it clearly hasn’t been properly maintained or cared for. There were no shade umbrellas at the pool like there was before. Made it very uncomfortable to spend any time at the pool. The property itself has gone downhill since our previous stays. This is our third time staying at this complex and this for sure was the worst stay. We were also informed at check-in that on the day that we are checking out the water to the whole complex would be shut off all day. All we received was a “sorry about that” no offer to discount our stay for the inconvenience. I honestly don’t think we will stay at this complex again. With better attention to cleanliness and providing usable, basic amenities, this could be a much better rental. As it stands, I would not recommend...
